Trying to repair the wifi atheros once the system is mounted in R/W mode I replaced the kext IO80211Family.kext and added ATH9Kinjector.kext to S/L/E but when running the command kmutil install --update- it throws an error with code 4097, does anyone know how to repair it?  In opencore this appears:

@DarkNeptune0 you should not put 3rd party kexts in SLE, only replace IO8211Family. Third party is injected with OpenCore and declared in Kernel it,s not guaranteed to work. I don’t speak from experience I replaced my card, BCM94360CS cost 10 bucks.

How to replace IO8211Family in bigSur ? my card need atheros40.kext

I managed to install Big Sur using a real iMac.

I'm a Clover utilizer, and I tried to boot it with clover but i get stuck at EndRandomSeed, but I also managed to create another USB drive with OpenCore 0.6.0

I don't have an EFI for this Big Sur HDD. And I don't know how to create one.

Can someone help me in creating my EFI folder?

These are my components:

Intel i5-2500

GTX 780 (Natively supported, doesn't need Web Drivers)

8 GB RAM

APFS HDD WITH BIIG SUR

If someone can help me succeed, I'll do my best to create an easy guide for everyone.

@pico joeFollowing the steps, before that you have to modify in opencore in the section NVRAM - csr-active-config with the value FFFFFFFF instead of 67000000

-Boot into Big Sur or a BS recovery/install disk
diskutil mount diskXsY

the real system volume (not the root snapshot, which will already be mounted at diskXsYsZ)

-Remount it as readwrite:

sudo mount -uw /Volumes/<Volume\ Name>

(In my case /Volumes/Test\ 1)

-Make a snapshot

/System/Library/Filesystems/apfs.fs/Contents/Resources/apfs_systemsnapshot -s "BeforeWifiKexts" -v /Volumes/<Volume\ Name>

- Check Snapshots on System :

diskutil apfs listSnapshots diskdiskXsY

There should be 2 Snapshots, one called beforewifikexts.

- Make backup snapshot bootable, notice “-r” instead of “-s”:

/System/Library/Filesystems/apfs.fs/Contents/Resources/apfs_systemsnapshot -r "BeforeWifiKexts" -v /Volumes/<Volume\ Name>

-Reboot

Sudo reboot

- Mount System disk

sudo diskutil mount diskXsY

-Remount it as readwrite:

sudo mount -uw /Volumes/<Volume\ Name>

(In my case /Volumes/Test\ 1)

- CheckSnapshots on System :

diskutil apfs listSnapshots diskdiskXsY

- Delete Snapshot

Sudo diskutil apfs deleteSnapshot disk1s5 -uuid UUIDHERE (replace disk1s5 and UUIDHERE with corresponding values, just leave the snapshot beforewifikexts)

- sudo reboot

- You can Mount s/w

sudo mount -uw /

@luki1979 I removed the injector and only replaced IO8211Family, in opencore I put ATH9Kinjector, but it still doesn't work.  It says can't load kext airport.atheros40 - link failed

Someone posted slightly modified kext on MacRumors, use that instead of stock Catalina one. This method it’s proven to work if your card worked OTB in Catalina. If you needed any more kexts it might still refuse to start the driver.

I am having the same problem.  It appears to be the result of this particular image that we downloaded.  I suspect that, when the next version of Big Sur comes out in a week or two, there will be new images available to download.  Hopefully, one will be better than the one we have.  Better yet, I am hoping to obtain access to a new enough real Mac to be able to make my own image.  Then, it should be clean and sized just the way I want it to be to restore to my laptop's partition for testing Big Sur.

interesting, I wouldn't trust an image made someone else, I guess if you are just testing then maybe that's ok but still... its not ready for prime time and still needs optimization. I installed BS from a real Mac mini and put that SSD in my test machine, although the OS is interesting, Catalina is my main driver.

So, everybody seems to be very happy with what I call a "meh" method of installing Big Sur.

Congrats to all of those. I think you'll have to redo that cloning of a VM for each update. Which seems a bit problematic IMO.

Is there any progress done on the understanding of what prevents the installer to work like on previous OSes like Catalina for example?

I read there's an encrypted APFS container created at some point?

what are the news ? xD

I have restored the 16gb macOS 11 dmg to a 128gb partition. How if I want to extend it to 256gb what should I do?

To resize the physical disk of BigSur when using the img dd method:

*Identify the physical disk you dd the img to X is example
diskutil list
*repair the physical disk partition
diskutil repairDisk diskX
*Resize the physical disk container volume
sudo diskutil apfs resizeContainer diskXs2 0
