Clone Wars: Open Tech Brands Products "Leopard Compatible"

You probably weren't expecting this, especially since Apple is now suing Psystar, but some folks are just too brave (or stupid?) to care. Open Tech Inc.'s "Open Tech" and "Open Tech XT" desktops have been (un)officially branded as Leopard compatible, according to these screenshots posted by the Engadget. I promptly went to Open Tech's website to see for myself, but it seems they had already taken down the OS logos. In fact, I caught a glimpse of them on their "Open Tech XT" page, but it dissappeared after subsequent refreshes. Fortunately, I was able to cap a pic of their webstore, which says:

"*OS X Leopard Will not be pre-installed or included. Instead you can install it yourself using an easy
Do-it-yourself kit
. All other Operating System will be preinstalled* VISTA & XP ARE 64-BIT",

along with a dropdown menu that allows you to select OS X Leopard as your choice of OS.

 

Open Tech Inc. is blatantly advertising their computers as Leopard capable and offering to supply users with miscellaneous materials for the purpose of installing Leopard on their products. The latter was specifically part of the legal complaint that Apple had filed against Psystar.

 

But honestly Open Tech, why can't your product and company names be a tad more creative than our now infamous friend, the Open Computer?

You know what, I'm sensing apple might just put their foot down if this keeps on going... Its like the Clone wars all over again...

 

also, Do-it-Yourself kit?? what would that contain i wonder? a kalyway DVD? lol

Some employees from Psystar went out and founded a company called... Open Tech? :angel:

That's ironic, since Windows isn't "open" :D

This is just {censored}. What serious company would ever use a .tk domain? And look at the website, it's about as bad as any small town computer retailer's website. I honestly can't take this seriously...

What a bunch of cowboys, with no respect for Apple or this community. I cannot believe anyone would even consider purchasing these machines from them. Save up for a real Mac..... where one will find beautifully designed hardware working hand in hand with OS X, 100%

I agree: if x86 for profit gets too prolific, Apple WILL have to put their foot down across the board. There's even people doing it on eBay now.

Although not surprising, it is terrible nonetheless they are selling it on ebay.

 

I think it's only a matter of time like you said before push comes to shove from Apple. They've tolerated the OSX86 community until now, but if these {censored} companies keep popping up exploiting the project's work and also people on ebay selling the software, game over.

Seriously.. we just need some more company doing the same thing before apple decide to do something to the OS itself to stop all these... god bless us OSX86ers

i just think it sucks, not just with the whole OSX movement, but pretty much every movement. technology is traveling too fast and the wrong people who don't know any better are obtaining access.. the once small elite crowd of nobody's that noone cared about, is now the giant "youtube using" everyones on it sites, that are prime targets for everyone. there was a reason why hotline or KDX or etc was popular, and it was because noone knew about it. now ANYONE can know about OSX86 and the easier it gets to do, the harder and faster the crackdowns happen. want to install OSX86? how does 2 months of trial and error sound, writing your own strings, testing multiple drivers, drives, kernels, etc... sounds crappy huh? well how does the world of 1 click plug and play sell on ebay usb, mom and dad can do it, osX sound? sounds like if normal people can do it then there is a problem... (in my opinion) and thats when the crackdowns happen

all this is benefiting apple, because of all the forums I own 1 Mac pro and 1 Macbook air, I have spend over $10K just buying Mac stuff, if I did not try their stuff, they would never get that business, few of my friends are also buying macbook air; so it’s not all, that apple is losing business, how stupid is it to buy a desktop for $6k... yes I am one of them; where I can build faster than that for half the price and works better; you know what I am talking about, and no issues, I might add, but the thing is I still bought Mac pro and lots of Mac software. I am sure Mac thinks about all these. This is all free marketing for Apple. This is how I look at it. I like Apple. But its technology should be free at your will, all this claver way of monopoly {censored} got to go, at least which is what I hope for.

ya know, they won't be sued. just as long as they don't modify the EULA.

 

they don't install leopard for you because the company (if the company is even real, i doubt it) would get in trouble, instead they send a "Do-it-yourself kit".

 

This way, they aren't violating the EULA, the customer/purchaser is.

i think they can make a hardware specific os but, any os they make that can run on let's say, my macbook, could be probably be hacked to run on anything

If you're classifying those purchases for business expenses then you aren't [in the US] wasting your money as they can be utilized as write downs.

I personally dont think the OSX86 community wouldnt be closed down by apple, weve got some truely talanted people here.. but I do think we may be stuck in 10.5.4 or the next minor release for a long long time if other stupid companies like this pop up... good thing I got everything i need backed up on two DVDs :(

Apple can do little to the community, just like Microsoft can do little to stop pirates from cracking their operating system. Once it begins it gains momentum quite quickly.

And as far as I can see on their website, they already changed the site. OS X is not mentioned there at all any more.

 

Just says "All major operating systems" and I dont think, that this is illegal.

Oh please, Apple can't do {censored} about osx86. The cost, time it would take and the shear number of developpers (some of which are out of USA law jurisdiction reach or don't have laws protecting such intel rights within their countries) to go out on legal spree versus private guys hacking their computers at home would be enormous. What they _could_ do though is introduce a higher level of hardware dependancy in osx but that won't happen either since they would have to ditch their previous hardware support. In the end Apple's greedy decision to go via consumer end hardware (especially the x86 processor) will backfire on them through clone companies. I think that this is 100% inevitable its just a question of time. At any rate it seems like dear king Steve is much more into gadget revenue then personal computers at this time which could help loosen the grip...

Ugh.. Pystar was enough, now we've got every man and his dog trying to sell Hackint0shes.. I mean, maybe its not all a bad thing, but they just do it so.. horribly. I mean, seriously, if you're gonna try selling a Hackintosh, at least make your page look more Apple-ish. What's up with that whole dark theme.. that site looks like some emo kid's myspace rather than a business website. And the name Open Tech? That's just sad that they cant be more original than that... i need some coffee, brb.
