3 More Get a Mac Adds!

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

Last night, Apple posted 3 new Get a Mac (also known as Mac vs. PC) ads. Two of the 3 ads focus on people's general attitude when it comes to Vista, and the fact that many people are actually downgrading to XP. The 3rd one focuses on the Mac's compatability and ease of use.

After almost 2 years of waiting, the dream is finally becoming a reality! Last week, Netkas released his modified Apple Darwin bootloader to successfully boot an UNMODIFIED EFI kernel with NO hacked patches/workarounds on Intel Core/Core 2 architecture PCs.

EFI booting has been one of the ultimate goals of the OSx86 scene since the beginning with the hacking of Marklar. Mark this day in OSx86 history, it has been a long time coming!

PC EFI is currently at V4, and includes FSB autodetect, as well as multiboot support.

You can find more info here at Netkas' site, including guides and more.

Thanks to Joe Cargo for breaking the news in our very own Reader News forum! [i don't know why this wasn't posted, but it definitely belongs on the Front Page.]

AFP for iPhone and iPod touch

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

One of the iPhone hackers, "Core" just finished implementing AFP for the iPhone and iPod touch. This means that you can now wirelessly mount your iPhone or iPod touch on your computer, while still having full read/write access. The guide is the second link at the bottom of this article.

    Saturday outage

    By Ed, in OSx86,

Apologies for the recent prolonged outage we had - contrary to rumours of us being forced down by Apple, it was merely a power outage as a result of our data centre upgrading the UPS. As a result, our systems were turned off and then on again which caused us lots of problems synchronising without storage arrays, resulting in the 10 hours of down time

If anyone finds any problems with the site in the meantime, please let me know, but I believe everything should be back to normal now.

A little earlier than expected, Apple released their 1.1.2 updates for their iPod Touch and iPhone. The update is confirmed to have deleted all 3rd party applications on the phone, no word yet on bricking unlocked phones. There is one notable difference, beside the international features for the UK release tomorrow - a battery symbol in iTunes next to the iPhone.

Right now, all iPhones and iPod Touches, when checked in iTunes, say there are no updates available. You can download the iPhone Update and the iPod Touch Update here.

    iPhone 1.1.2 Tomorrow?

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

There was a meeting this morning with the Apple press team, and they confirmed that they will allow the iPhones to update themselves to FirmWare 1.1.2. The update will bring wider language support with international keyboards and special character keys, and access to The Cloud Wi-Fi hotspots for UK users. No word yet on if the update will destroy 3rd party applications installed on the iPhone, but it is expected that the update will.

A bug that has been around since Mac OS X 10.3 was released and is starting to scare Leopard users. The bug occurs when a user is doing an move operation, and a network, USB, or FireWire drive is disconnected. The result is that the user could loose huge amounts of data, with an unstable drive. The faulty drives seem to be all Seagate 2.5" drives that are manufactured in China, with a Firmware revision of 7.01. They are also all SATA interface. The error makes the head clash with the platter. This bug has been around since the 10.3 times. Will they finally fix this bug?

CNET UK reports that during dinnertime, an Asus executive let leak that "Asus is helping Apple build a Tablet PC." Coinciding with the fact that Asus is one of Apple's contract manufacturer, this news confirms the speculation of many that Apple is seeking to enter the Tablet PC market. No further details are known, but it is practically a given that such a Tablet PC would be Intel Core architecture based [santa Rosa specifically], with most likely a revised Leopard incorporating support for hardware multi-touch, writing recognition, and 'Coverflow' interfaces.

On a personal note, this is THE Apple product I have been waiting for. The drool fest starts now...
