PC EFI Enables Vanilla OS X Kernel Boot on White Box PCs

REVENGE

After almost 2 years of waiting, the dream is finally becoming a reality! Last week, Netkas released his modified Apple Darwin bootloader to successfully boot an UNMODIFIED EFI kernel with NO hacked patches/workarounds on Intel Core/Core 2 architecture PCs.

EFI booting has been one of the ultimate goals of the OSx86 scene since the beginning with the hacking of Marklar. Mark this day in OSx86 history, it has been a long time coming!

PC EFI is currently at V4, and includes FSB autodetect, as well as multiboot support.

You can find more info here at Netkas' site, including guides and more.

Thanks to Joe Cargo for breaking the news in our very own Reader News forum! [i don't know why this wasn't posted, but it definitely belongs on the Front Page.]

There is no easy installer, yet.

do u think that when leopard iATKOS is released it will come with an easy installer for PC EFI? Also, does anybody know if iATKOS will contain the same drivers and patches as uphuck 10.4.9 (since uphuck is the 1 making iATKOS.)

I am a N00B...I've done a couple of installs and played around but thats all the experience I have.

With that said. With this new development what does this exactly mean for hardware? For instance the nvidia 8800. From my understanding the nvidia 8800 drivers from gotoh, aqua-mac & etc (sorry if i forgot anyone) are possible because they replace efi values with regular pc values for proper communication. If we can get a full efi system does it not still necessitate us to use hardware that use EFI in their stock form? Maybe Im confused. I look forward to hearing more about this new age in osx86 especially because I'll finally build my own hackintosh outside of installing it on the computers at work.

Congrats to Netkas!

Thanks for all the hard work

saying thanks is never enough

but is better than giving nothing back atm.

i just hope the improvements of the ToH team keep coming

and with less trouble for all the osx86 comunity ^^

thx netkas =)

iATKOS has been postponed exclusively in light of the news of PC EFI [which evidently indicates PC EFI will be integrated into iATKOS]. In addition, the initial release of iATKOS was not planned to include the uphuck drivers, which were planned to be released as ppf patches later on. It is unclear whether this has changed or not in light of the delay.

Thanks for replying. Anyways, that would be REALLY dumb if they didnt include the uphuck drivers cuz then it wont work for alot of ppl. As for PC EFI, will the PC EFI included with iATKOS require 2 HFS+ partitions like current guides cuz i only have 2 partitions, 1 for vista and 1 for tiger.

I'm not aware of the fact that PC EFI needs 2 HFS+ partitions to function. I read the comments under the V4 release announcement, and people multiboot with multiple partitions, namely one per operating system with nobody specifying 2 for OS X.

ok i know this is a noob question (look at my name) but what does this mean exactly? i have a almost fully running osx86 dual boot system so does this change anything for that if i switch to this?

now all we need is a PC_EFI HCL, so that we can all build a 100% Mac compatible PC that runs on vanilla kernel and kexts :)

anyone feeling like opening a thread and maintaining it?

Sorry if this question sounds stupid, but with all these breakthroughs are we going to be able to buy a legal leopard DVD at a store and install it on a PC, in a near future?

Again, sorry if the question sounds stupid....

no, the real leopard dvd does not have the emulated efi on it

so it will not run on a pc

a hacked dvd with efi and leopard will be possible

Yeah, but also if a PC has no standard Apple hardware, like VIA, nForce, SIS, or another chipsets it will need kexts that enable see its disk and other components, but for those motherboards that have similar Mac components should be possible.
