Shadowfax555
After the installation, when I want to start OSX, i see: "Error loading the operating system" (in dutch). I've searched a lot on this forum but I can't find an answer. Most people say to make sure that the OSX partition is set to active but I'm 100% sure it is. Because when I boot from the dvd and set my XP partition to active, it boot's into XP just fine. It doesn't boos to OSX. Things I did: - I partitioned with Partition Magic. A XP partition and a fat32 partition (primary and active). In the setup I erased the fat32 partition. - I also trief partitioning with diskpart in msdos. - I tried something with Acroptis but that seems to copy a lot of files, so when I select XP or OSX, it always starts XP. I have no idea where I did something wrong. I'm using the 10.4.8 version from JAS. I know that version is probably corrupt, but I would like to have the same error as everyone else, because then I know the newer version might work. My PC: Dell Dimension 8400 My CPU: Intel Pentium 4 530 (MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3) My Hard drive: WDC WD 1600JD The chance is I think really small but I hope someone can help me. B612
I guess I was the most unlucky guy on the earth. I had a double booting system with Mac and WinXP Pro, on one hard disk. On the partition of XP Pro I had files I got after months of continuous work (till very late at night). Yesterday, JaS DVD didn't want to install, so I re-installed his 10.4.6 version, I updated it with the Apple Combo 10.4.8 updater. Then I changed Kernel and SMBIOS, but I couldn't boot even in single user mode. So I inserted JaS DVD again, I tried to make the upgrade. The DVD this time worked, but in the end......................... .....................................................I have lost all the data on my hard disk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I can see my hard disk with Partition Magic (booting with a boot CD), as an unpartitioned drive and I feel like fainting! Probably I would have to spend something like 1600 euros just to get my data back. Does anybody know another chance I could have to solve the problem? PS: of course I am writing from my laptop, where I didn't have my work!
Infamous
If your partition was only erased from MBR you can use TestDisk.
crewdawg257
I was at 10.4.6 and updated using this package on my Inspiron 1705. The worst side effect was that I lost my ethernet - darn it. I had gotten .6 working almost perfectly except for sound! Has anyone seen this? en0 just dosnt even show up in the network panel at all. The interesting thing is that profile does show an internal ethernet device! Is there a way to try and bring up that ethnet device from the command line - then i might be able to see what the error is... I hate to go back to .6 because my dual core seems to be working! I am having the same issues with my E1705. Profiler has en0 (Internal Network Device) but does not work.

Rolling_Go
gave the senthex kernel a whirl, got the oft-reported "About This Mac" not working. networking also is having issues...it detects the wired ports (onboard dual gigabit Marvell 88E8053) but doesn't detect the onboard wifi (ASUS Wi-Fi AP Solo reported as RealTek RTL8187, didn't work in 10.4.7 either, not a big deal) and the wired ports that I use....don't function, I guess. assigning static IPs does not work and DHCP assigns some random address (obviously not assigned by the router as I've set it to assign only certain addresses through DHCP) which doesn't work either. i'll try mifki's kernel if/when i get a chance. good work on this, everybody. Magicman
No don't use usenet. The majority of the people don't have it and most aren't willing to pay for it except for the perverts wanting to add to their illegal porn collections. Torrents or IRC are the best way to go. I still don't think the iso was corrupted. I got mine to install.

giandal
More testing revealed some more problems with this DVD: when I installed it on a partition aside the existing one everything went ok. Then I decided to wipe out the disk and reinstall everything from scratch and this DVD only. Well, to my surprise the thing won't boot. I know you may be immediately thinking, this guy did not set the partition active or things like that... well I did everything correctly, because when I decided to reinstall from JaS 10.4.6 everything loaded correctly. Then I tried to update this and guess what? Once more no boot. Again, repartitioned the disked. Installed JaS 10.4.6 (+updates) on one partition, installed mifki on the next one and voila', everything is working again.... So, JaS, if you're listening, please double check that your DVD can install on a new disk! UPDATE: I missed the discussion on the md5 sum, I got the wrong one! So forget my comments, waiting for the new release

You could also use Partition Table Doctor (it rebuilds your partition table) and/or Acronis Disk Director Suite (it can recover a deleted partition) Both are commercial apps, but you can "borrow" them from the usual places. OzOSX86
Well I got home yesterday and grabbed the DVD to try in my E6600 based system which so far balks at both the 10.4.7 install DVD and 10.4.5 DVDs. The good new this time it didn't instant reboot like it used to but it boots the grey startup screen for about 40 secs and then gives me the little 'no go' symbol in the top of the Apple logo and goes no further. WTF is that error in particular, I saw it recently on another system I was trying to boot?

gid501
to all thos people who lost a partition: try cgsecurity.org's testdisk. it can intelligently salvage under a lot of OSs, even spanned raid5 stuf iirc. Under win32 try R-Studio (google for it). the testdesk utility is also included on inside security's bootable "insert" cd: http://www.inside-security.de/insert_en.html. essential for anyone stupid enough not to backup data in the first place and then fcku around with pre-production-hacked-osx86 builds on the same system !? n-way.... vassalle
on a slightly different topic.. is it possible for me to use mikifi's new kernel (the one with HPET but without NX), now that i have installed JAS 10.4.8 using the semthex kernel? Do i need to do a fresh installation is there another way? I'm asking this question because i overclock, and would really love to be able to set the FSB at boot. You can just put your new mach_kernel in / and edit the boot plist to use the new one, if you're uncomfortable with overwriting the current one. vassalle
okay.. think i got it. have not been playin with my hachintosh for a while, will need to do my homework. can't find where the boot.plist is.. haha anyway, thanks for the tip.

Hi, I would like to ask you one thing. I installed 10.4.8 with the first iso from jaS, the half corrupted...but it works for me. I selected semthex package during installation and I can boot natively from hd with chian0 method; with my specs in sign mifki don't work (reboot loop). After installation I didn't do anything more, for example adding string in boot plist: do I have semthex kernel already running without doing anything or I have to do something with terminal? (I don't know anyway how to do this things!) Thank you if you can reply to me. bye.

Installation of 10.4.6 goes fine but then reboots every time after about 3 seconds in to the boot process after the install. The thing is I can't get around this problem. No other version I have, the 10.4.7 HotISO or my original 10.4.5 DVDs will not boot past the first 2 lines it just reboots+. 10.4.8 DVD boots for 40sec then gives me the small no sign in the top of the Apple logo. I think I'm going to have to download the fixed version of 10.4.8.
