Testing on the KNOPPIX_V5.0.1CD-2006-06-01-EN.iso file (696mb) for which the OFFICIAL md5 is 653acc801d4059598bd388de8171a20d, here are results:

md5 with the md5.exe from DCS: 4CAEF60394D90C68A6F0548B52C33351

md5 with md5summer and hashcalc: 653acc801d4059598bd388de8171a20d

So this is CONFIRMED: the tool posted before by cageman DOESN'T give proper md5 hashes (at least for large files).

Want to add also that md5summer has always given correct md5 for many Linux install distros; very reliable.

(however md5 hashes coincide for smaller files, at least up to 103mb -- from a test i did on eclipse install package; so the tool from DCS is problematic for very large files)

OK, first time poster here. I'm checking in with generally positive results.

My torrent finished this morning at 7am pacific time, and the iso burned fine.

The test subject is an IBM Thinkstation, a Prescott P4 at 3GHz with a 200MHz FSB, enabled with SSE3. Its mainboard is an Intel 865 chipset-based board, using an 82801 Southbridge chip. The video card is an ATI Radeon 9550, and the hard drive used is a spare 20GB maxtor hooked up with the PATA cable, with no other hard drives hooked up. There's 1GB of RAM.

The install worked pretty flawlessly, thought I needed to do a "-v" on the DVD to get it going. I used the default kernel. I erased and partitioned the drive with the DVD's Disk Utility, and did NOT install any of the extra patches.

Generally, it works just fine, with the following problems:

1. Only boots with the DVD in the drive -- otherwise, I get a blinking cursor. I see the suggested fixes.

2. 1024x768 is the only resolution available.

3. "About this Mac" and the System Profiler make the desktop blink, and that's it.

4. This system has two ethernet ports: one is built-in, and there's another PCI card. Mac OS incorrectly calls the internal network port the "PCI Networking Card" and the PCI Card the "Built-In Ethernet Adapter." That one had me going around in circles for 10 minutes before I figured it out.

5. There's no way to press the Apple/Command/Shamerock keypress on my keyboard.

6. No Quartz Extreme.

Generally, I know NOTHING about kexts and ISO patches, (I know, I need to catch up on my reading), but I'm wildly impressed with things thus far.

Here are my XBench scores:

Hi everybody,

I'm new to the whole getting osx to work on a pc and having problems

The specs to my pc are as follows:

P4 with SSE3

1 gig ram

Radion 9550

When I load the default kernel with -v at the boot prompt, it tells me waiting for root device.

What could be the possible reason for this. I have read that that means it can not read my hard drive or something, would that mean i need to partition my drive as HFS+. Any help appreciated.

JaS, my suggestion would be to post this DVD to Usenet instead. Torrents are slow and unreliable and it is entirely possible (actually, even, likely) that Jobs and Co. have fake seeders on the payroll to try and disrupt these releases. Usenet would solve those problems ASAP.

Not everyone has access to usenet, or means to pay for access to it.

It is interesting that I cannot boot using vmware with this new release, it gives a kernel stack fault, it boots fine native though...

Great, but that only works if you have the 10.4.6 DVD. I don't, and it seems like a lot of folks are just now joining this party at 10.4.8, like me.

An earlier post says the MBR is messed up with the 10.4.8 Disk Utility, and if true, then one could use Windows/Linux to format the drive with FAT32 or NTFS, then you could use the 10.4.8 Disk Utility to delete and create a new parititon ONLY, and then install to that.

Being a PC consultant, this makes sense to me. I may try it on Thursday.

my MD5 is 36463658aff360345550fd6245645831 too.

[no problem with installation, just damaged iCal.app and intel915 kext problem]

No problem here either - I installed on one of three partitions freshly formatted with Myzars 10.4.5 DVD. When I first tried to install I got the circle/slash symbol but it went fine after freshly formatting it with another install dvd.

I too have the damaged iCal and intel915.kext error message.

This was on a Intel D915glvgl

Thanks for all your hard work JaS!

The installer on 10.4.8 hosed my MBR whenever it would erase the destination, not just when creating partitions. The disk utility on that thing is truly borked.

asapreta how can u correct the error when the only one who has the correct one (JaS) is not seeding anymore?

Sorry to take to long to answer but it didn´t fixed anything.

Without JAS nothing will be possible.

But as some are able to install the ISO I think is something related to the new kernel and our motherboards/chipsets.
