WWDC 2008 Rumor Roundup

Numberzz

The annual World Wide Developer Conference starts tomorrow at 10:00AM(-8:00GMT) with a keynote from Steve Jobs. We don't know exactly what they are going to announce, but, as usual, there are a bunch of rumors to choose from.

iPhone/iPod touch/2.0

There have been rumors swirling around the 3G iPhone since December, and the general consensus is that it will, in fact, be released tomorrow. But wait, will it be thinner? Will it be thicker? Does it have GPS? Does it have a front-facing video camera? Does it ship with 2.0? Does it have a removable battery? Does it have a non-recessed headphone jack? Is it made of plastic? Does it have more than one color? Will it be cheaper? Who knows, but we'll find out on Monday.

Mac OS X 10.6

A few sources have pointed out that Apple is planning on shipping the next version of OS X, 10.6, in January of 2009. Sources also say that developers will be given a preliminary version on Monday to test. It is said that this version will not contain many new features, but will mostly be a release that fixes problems/makes the computer faster.

.Mac/MobileMe

It first started with rumors saying that Apple has purchased me.com for their use of the new .Mac service. TUAW said that .Mac would get a complete revamp, with over the air-syncing and many more enhancements. Strings that included "MobileMe" were found in the iPhone SDK, their website, and OS X 10.5.3.

Live Coverage

I would say that MacRumorsLive has the best live coverage, but that's just my opinion

So what do you think? Tell us in this thread!

10.6 is waaaay to early in january 2009! thats only a year and some months after leopard's release!

and there is nothing wrong with leo, it runs stable as hell

i hope macbook pro updates (i planning to buy one)

Maybe the early release is so they have 2 extra years to work on 10.7

There are still some problems with leopard too. Two that come to mind are problems with the input menu and window views.

I think they will be coming out with a second monitor-less desktop, between the mini and the Pro. They certainly need it. It will help bring over more windows users to the Mac. I think that's what the two bridges are all about :( They will also be doing something with .mac. Either making it a lot cheaper and/or changing the name. I also think that GPS will DEFINITELY be added to the iPhone/Touch. If that's the case, then I will be buying a Touch as soon as they come out. Say goodbye to garmin

Are there really that many problems with Leopard that they need a new version of the OS to fix them? I've been using it for months now and I've not noticed anything beyond Safari crashing quite a lot (I just use Camino).

I mean like general fixes, making it faster, and changing stuff up a bit; to make it more usable.

I don't think they are doing it to 'fix problems'. It is more of a 'all Intel' version release, as PPC will not be able to update.

this is what makes me want to buy a mac. i mean cmon about a year after leo and they are coming out with a new os that will be more optimized??? so it will run faster i assume, while with windows laptops, or pc's in general. well how long was it since xp came out? more than 3 years, now that vista is out when is windows 7 coming out? and why are they just showing some cool touchscreen applications that will be included??? honestly i dont care. just make windows vista but much faster and less problems and i will upgrade to it. for now though, XP for games (do i realllly need DX10? DX9 looks good enough for me) plus i cant wait to buy a macbook since they are giving a free ipod touch WOOT WOOT! finaly i can get rid of my old 4G Ipod 40gb with a half working hard drive lol

Yep, and Leopard mail still doesn't work for a lot of people (they can receive but not send). Still, I think it's way to early for 10.6, but maybe they are just going to show some ideas to get the rumor mill started. Those things help with sales ^_^

Ah Apple! How do they do it? So secretive...so compelling...they've got me waiting with baited breath!

New Macbook Pros will have to wait for Intel's Montevina chipset, which has been delayed from June to July. However, with Apple's "special" relationship with Intel, one never knows. My money is on a new MBP in August or so.

iTunes 8 would be awesome, especially if the cover flow was done in Core Animation...

OS X has a faster release cycle than Windows. Tiger was an anomaly, sticking around for so long, an update in 2009 is highly likely. Windows 7 in 2009, on the other hand...Well I'll be really surprised!

well how long was it since xp came out? more than 3 years
XP came out in October 2001! Almost 7 years ago.

;) Wow. Its funny how seven years later they havent gotten better at making an OS. I wasnt aware that Apple releases an update every year. Thats awsome. Makes me even more likely to purchase a macbook + ipod touch after wwdc. I really hope they update the macbook design to that of the air (ie backlit keyboard) that would absolutely rock my world :( . I cant wait!!!

yeah i would agree. but i think the reason they did is becase they were trying to rival OS X with all its eye candy and features and "Simplicity" which they failed horribly. why do i have to press start>turn off>shut down> are you sure> just to shut down in vista, while in xp its just Start> Shut down> press enter and BOOM its off! oh wel just 1 of my nitpicks with vista.

Ok im going to try not to hijack this threat but I might buy a macbook for My last year of College since my laptop died on me :) omg i cant wait. finaly a light laptop with a great battery, and of course free ipod touch!!!! god how can u not love apple? sure their stuff is very expensive, but back to school, ur giving me a free ipod touch??? that changes everything!

i read that snow leopard will be 29$ for Leopard users and 129$ as we know for older version of OS X Users.

anyway i think it's early to talk about a new OS for Mac but no problem with new OS for iPhone,we will see TODAY don't forget it!.

Thanks Numberzz :P

nice photo...

I believe that this photo was taken from Angel Island facing east going to Oakland, though I am not sure which bridge is actually the one there, but I'm pretty sure that it is the one in the front.

Thanks Numberzz ;)

Thanks :P

Actually it's the same number of clicks in Vista as in XP, unless you've gone in to the power settings and changed the button so you only take two clicks.

And, only a few hours to WWDC, I'm thrilled :P Hoping for decently-constructed MacBooks and a new Mini

I don't think PPC support will die with 10.6. Look at how long they supported the G3 (YEARS into OS X). This far into Intel (10.5), Apple finally killed off the G3's. I think we'll see G4/G5 support for a couple more years if we follow this pattern.
