  1. When I say I can't boot I mean I can't boot anything nor get into the BIOS settings. It'll freeze in random places and sometimes not even make it to the POST screen. I've tested the RAM (memtest and booting one stick at a time), the HDs (tried different boot drives and no drive), the graphics card (switched in two different ones and tried booting into windows), replaced the CMOS battery, and even took everything apart and cleaned the entire board. Power supply is fine too. That leaves the mobo and the CPU. I'm pretty sure the CPU is fine so that leaves the motherboard.
  2. There is something wrong/failing with my current GA-EP35-DS4 motherboard. It constantly freezes on boot up, even before I can access the BIOS screen. It took me five hours of constant restarting to finally boot it up tonight. Once booted it works fine for some reason though. So I'm looking to replace it since I can't afford a new build right now, and I really need this computer. Let me know what you have.
  3. Here is what I had to do. In order to use filevault 1 in Lion you have to install over a 10.6 install that already has a filevault account enabled. You cannot install lion over a regular account then transfer a filevault 1 sparsebundle over. You can open it but you cannot make that sparsebundle your Home folder. So I reinstalled 10.6 and enabled filevault, installed/upgraded 10.7, and copied over all my data to my new home older.
  4. I figured it out. It seems there was a problem with the 10.6 install. Did a clean install of 10.6 up to 10.6.8, booted via the 10.7 usb stick, and installed lion. Everything's working fine.
  5. InstallESD.dmg should be inside Install Mac OS X Lion.app not on Desktop/install. If you have IN_APP_DMG='InstallESD.dmg' in the script then leave it. Right click on Install Mac OS X Lion.app and select show package contents. Drag InstallESD.dmg into the window that opens. Run the command again and see if that works.
  6. I'm having trouble installing this. I did it once to try it out then erased everything to store some files and now I can't do it again. I keep getting install failed. I can't figure out what I am doing differently. Don't put InstallESD.dmg on the desktop. Inside the mkboot script it looks for a file called Install Mac OS X Lion.app in /Applications. That file has to be named Install Mac OS X Lion.app exactly. It it isn't named that then rename it. It then looks for a file within that app called InstallESD.dmg at Install Mac OS X Lion.app/Contents/SharedSupport. If your InstallESD.dmg isn't at that location, open mkboot (in the install folder you downloaded) with TexEdit and change the line IN_APP_DMG='Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg' to the location of your InstallESD.dmg within the app (such as IN_APP_DMG='InstallESD.dmg') Edit: How do I fix that codebox stretch?
  7. So I've been able to install 10.7 and get everything working and now I want to transfer my filevault 1 encrypted home folder to my Lion install since filevault 2 won't work. I've read that I am still able to use it in Lion. Now here is the problem. My hard drive has some bad sectors now, so I cannot transfer the whole image. I already know the specific files. I have all the files backed up except those ones. So how should I go about this? Is there a way to create a filevault 1 home folder in Lion, then transfer all my files to it? Is there a way to do this in Snow Leopard on an external drive, then transfer it over? Or, will I have to install Snow Leopard on another hard drive, create the same account with a filevault home directory, transfer the files, then transfer it over to Lion?
  8. Can I fix my RAID array?

I had cloned a working Snow Leopard installation from a single hd to a new RAID 0 array and was in the process of trying to get it to boot. My current boot drives (and backup drives) are running out of room so I stuck my porn on the new drives temporarily to get some space back until I could make the switch, since I don't consider it too important. Anyway I fixed it somehow (or it fixed itself). Diskutility told me that the RAID array had failed and then later wouldn't even show the partitions, just two empty drives. After some googling I found this partition recovery program called TestDisk that looked like it might be able to help. I ran it and it started scanning. When it hit 1% I quit it because it would've taken 34 hours to scan the entire hd. I logged out and when I logged back in later the RAID array mounted itself. I don't know if the program did anything or if my logging out and back in did it, but everything seems fine now. The porn is safe and all is right in the world.
  9. I was following a guide to get another RAID-0 array bootable and used the command: "diskutil eraseVolume "HFS+" "disk0s1" /dev/disk0s1" but since the last time I restarted the disk numbers changed so I erased the wrong one and now I can't access the array. Is there any way to fix this? I only erased disk0s1, the 200MB partition.
  10. I don't want an SSD. Too expensive and too small. My RAID 0 performance is good enough. If I added an SSD I would lose a hard drive since I only have 4 ports available. Plus it doesn't fit in with my situation at all.
  11. Right now I have two WD500's in a RAID 0 and two 640's in a RAID 0. Both are RAIDs are through Apple's software. I back up the two 500's with a 640 (since I haven't gone over 640GB yet) and I backup the two 640's with a Seagate 1.5TB. Now the two 500's are approaching the 640 limit of the backup so I need to buy a new hard drive, but don't know what I should do. The two 500's are my boot drive and the two 640's are my media drive. I only have 4 SATA ports available. Here are the HD's I have to play with: 2 x WD 500 GB 3 x WD 640 GB 1 x Seagate 1.5 TB Option 1) Buy another Seagate 1.5. PROS: This is more than enough room to backup the 500's and it will give me the option to RAID the 1.5's in the future. CONS: A lot of wasted space. This isn't the best HD. Expensive. Option 2) Buy another 640 and hook up all 4 into a RAID 0. Use the two 500's and 1.5TB to back this up. PROS: A four HD RAID 0. Cheap. I can partition it so that I use 1.5TB for one partition and 1TB for the other, allowing me to utilize the full 1.5TB for backup (right now the 1.5 has about 200GB that I won't use since 640 x 2 = 1280) CONS: Don't know how much of a speed increase I will get since I use software RAID. One drive failing. Option 3) Buy more than one hard drive and do something else. Option 4) Something you suggest So what do you think?
  12. GA-EP35-DS4 64-bit KP

I have the same board but won't get snow leopard for four or five days maybe try Chameleon RC2 and did you try the AppleHDA Patcher for sound? also are you on 64-bit in the bios?
  13. Any should work since you plug it into a usb connection on the motherboard
  14. After I updated I had atserver and and mdworker going for a while, but thankfully not as long as they used to.
