FireFox 3 Beta 1 Available

Numberzz

Today, the developers over at Mozilla have released an early beta of the newest version of FireFox. The new beta can be downloaded for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. The new features include:

--Improved security features such as: better presentation of website identity and security, malware protection, stricter SSL error pages, anti-virus integration in the download manager, and version checking for insecure plugins.

--Improved ease of use through: better password management, easier add-on installation, new download manager with resumable downloading, full page zoom, animated tab strip, and better integration with Windows Vista and Mac OS X.

--Richer personalization through: one-click bookmarking, smart search bookmark folders, direct typing in location bar searches your history and bookmarks for URLs and page titles, ability to register web applications as protocol handlers, and better customization of download actions for file types.

--Improved platform features such as: new graphics and font rendering architecture, major changes to the HTML rendering engine to provide better CSS, float-, and table layout support, native web page form controls, colour profile management, and offline application support.

--Performance improvements such as: better data reliability for user profiles, architectural improvements to speed up page rendering, over 300 memory leak fixes, and a new XPCOM cycle collector to reduce entire classes of leaks.

Mysteriously, the new UI that Mac users love that is currently in Safari could not be found in this release. Also, a mixture of the Tiger UI and the Leopard UI is present. The dialogue boxes have the old pinstripes that we have all gotten enough of.

I can't believe that the close button on the tabs are on the right side! And to think that Mozilla team said that they were working harder to integrate Firefox into the OS!

Nevertheless, Firefox is a great browser and I'm using it now and satisfied with it.

Here is what I mean. The Firefox dialogues have the pinstripes that the older versions of Mac OS X had.

@Sabr, it is the exact same color as other windows when they are not selected. Also, when it isn't selected, it is still the same color.

While not included in the release - proto is the ongoing development theme for firefox on OSX

The scrolling issue is driving me crazy. I'm stuck with Firefox for my development work and love of extensions but scrolling is just a joke.

The difference with scrolling in Safari compared to Firefox is dramatic. I wonder if this will ever get fixed?

It is actually much lighter than other windows when they are not selected

Hmmm, well, that's going to be annoying/confusing...

I hated it when each tab had it's own close button. I know it's a lot quicker this way but I preferred it when there was one close button at the right hand side and it closed which ever tab was selected. With the current method more accidents happen when selecting tabs. Maybe if they had it so that the close buttons in the tabs only because visible a second after entering a tab.

Also I hope now you can open two or more folders of bookmarks in the same window. For example, I've been looking for HDDs to purchase and separated the bookmarks i found in 2 folders: Seagate, WD.

What happens now is I want to often open all the Seagate bookmarks from it's folder and then all the WD bookmarks from it's folder in the same Firefox window. Just can't do it. When I open the WD folder bookmarks they over right the Seagate bookmarks opened.

PS: Numberzz, I wonder what your gmail account is that ends in a z :D .

Also, you could have logged off you know.

You think that might be why I blocked it out? Also, what email is KFC_ROCKS@oops.com?
