I have a Sapphire 6870. Here are my results.

Using GraphicsEnabler=Yes

After much testing with many, many different adapters I have concluded that with these drivers they absolutely will not output DVI-I -> VGA.

However, if you use a display port -> ACTIVE DISPLAY PORT 2 VGA Adapter -> VGA, it will work.

Left4Dead2 frame rates are absolutely horrible, but it does run.

Hi ^Andy^ (and anyone else reading this that can contribute their thoughts),

I wanted to find out something since this is my current Mak Hak Pro setup:

-Silverstone Fortress FT02 Black w/window

-Core i7 930 CPU Overclocked to 4.2 Ghz

-Premium Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 Water Cooling Motherboard with additional heatsink

-XSPC Dual Bay (Dual Coolant Tank) for Dual Watercooling for the Mobo and Processor.

-Koolance CPU-360 water block for the CPU

-Koolance HX-CU1020V High Flow 3x120mm Radiator

-Tygon Tubing

-Koolance fittings throughout

-12GB GDDR3 1600Mhz Corsair Dominator RAM Kit (w/fan)

-1x128GB SSD Mushkin Drive 285MB/S Read 255MB/Sec Write for Mac OS X

-Replaced all stock Silverstone fans with their higher model Silverstone fans that create even more "positive pressure" within the tower

-1x6128GB SSD Corsair Drive 220MB/S Read 200MB/Sec Write for Windows 7

-1x600GB Velociraptor for Backup and Storage

-LG Blu-Ray 10X Burner and Reader

-Dual-Layer DVD+/- RW Drive

-XFX GTX 280 Graphics Cards

-Silverstone ST1500W - 1500 Watt PSU

There are few things that I just purchased to max this thing out, here they are:

- Core i7 970 CPU (6 core processor)

- G. Skill 24GB RAM kit

- Koolance CPU-370 (New waterblock for CPU)

- Koolance Dual Bay / Dual Pump Unit

- Koolance Quick Disconnects

I would like to now purchase the best graphics card out there that will fit within this unit (nothing over 10.5 inches in length). I've noticed that these cards have been added as workable cards and I also like them because they have OpenGL 4.2 and NOT OpenGL 3.2. I'd like to have the latest OpenGL app as I use hi-end graphic apps like Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and Apple Motion. I don't know if these apps can take advantage of either one of OpenGL versions, but I'm thinking that 4.2 would be better or at least available for future use (as I don't want to upgrade to another graphics card for at least 2 more years). Here are the three different cards. Please let me know witch one would be the best fit:

1) XFX HD-687A-ZNBC Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition 1GB 256-bit DDR5

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...f264900d619e3ae

or this one:

2) XFX HD-687A-ZDBC Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150520

(I like the double fans for a cooler run card)

and the last one:

3) SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100314VXSR Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814102925

Honestly I really wanted this one (since ASUS is one of the most reliable card companies out there):

ASUS EAH6870/2DI2S/1GD5 Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...96f3009b8b7b3b6

But they don't have it available anymore and the one place that does (eBay) they're going for $290 - $325 and they're overseas. I don't like taking chances purchasing anything like that overseas.

Lastly, I noticed this post from a user that had problems with this card (that is similar to the first two XFX 6870 cards but a slightly different model):

http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=22816

It was this card: XFX HD-687A-ZDFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5

Maybe his particular situation was just an unusual one. So Andy (or anybody else for that matter) PLEASE let me know what you can as some of these Newegg.com deals will be ending by the end of this month and I would like to make the best purchase as soon as possible, but the correct one also so I don't face any issues down the road. Thank you in advance for your time and help... :-)

xfx dual fan is better

I was JUST NOW PMing you. Wow that's weird. So why do you believe that the Dual fan one is better over the rest of them? I do like it, I was just curious... Actually (as mentioned before) I would like to have the card that you have (for better reliability purposes from advice from some of the admin staff on Tonymac), but I really don't want to spend $290 - $325 for that card. Plus, that card isn't available anymore (I contacted the company directly, twice, and spoke to two different reps to make sure they were not producing these anymore). Ebay's the only place selling it:

http://cgi.ebay.com/New-ASUS-EAH6870-2DI2S...=item1c1822c725

http://cgi.ebay.com/ASUS-1GB-RADEON-HD-687...#ht_3381wt_1141

Also, I did go here to view compatible cards last night:

http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16152

and found the card you mentioned to purchase over the other two:

List Number=39

Brand= XFX

Model= HD-687A-ZDBC 1GB DDR5 aka Black Edition Dual Fan (OC)

Device ID= ID=0x6738

#####= 3.5.2, Extracted only ATi 1.6.32.12, Chimera 1.1 (via pacifist)

Method= Chimera 1.1 (uses Andy's fix), GE=yes

Framebuffer= Autodetect, so not needed, but probably duckweed

MacOS= 10.6.7

Reported by= colorfuel

Notes= Use OpenGL.framework from latest 10.6.7 MBP update to replace old OpenGL.framework. This corrects the brightness (gamma?) problem with Valve Games (eg. Portal 2, Half-Life 2 etc.). Here are the files: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;#entry1655159

Now, from what I seeing here, it looks like this person had to jump through some hoops to get this thing working properly. I'm looking to see if I can avoid having to install all those files to get things set in place. Actually (and I didn't realize this till now) you had one this one (below) that I was asking would be the better card up there, that had some easier success rates. Here's that card:

List Number=9

Brand=XFX

Model=HD-687A-ZNBC Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express

Device ID=

#####=

MacOS=

Reported by=jpa

That's the other reason why I wanted your thoughts on this... I'm just wanting to make sure that I'm getting the right card and I don't mess things up for myself with extra install modded files that might or might not work. Mind you, I just now noticed this information as I'm writing this.

Something else, I just noticed this card on that approved list on that link:

List Number=28

Brand=XFX

Model=6870 HD-687A-ZDFC (New twin blade cooler model)

Device ID=0x6738

#####=3.4 & Andy's Fix

MacOS=10.6.7

Reported by=MJGunn

That have it here on Newegg.com (and I didn't even mention that as one of the cards to choose from):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...0-521-_-Product

You know with the XFX 280 GTX it just worked - period. No installing any other drivers or anything else, it just worked. In fact I have two of them (just in case the one of them breaks down and stops working; so far, so good though). Again, thanks for whatever input you (or anyone else that has experience with these cards) can give. I look forward to the replies... :(

BTW, your Avatar (someone mentioned it was scary) don't get rid of it; IT'S CREATIVE - I LIKE IT !!! Later... PNugg :-)

You know what's jacked up about all this stuff. I just went on www.xfxforce.com and just found out (with some more searching) that all of the cards that I was interested in that are on Newegg.com state that they use OpenGL 4.2 but on XFX's site they all use OpenGL 3.2. I guess it doesn't matter either way because Mac OS X only uses OpenGL 2.1 - LOL !!! That's messed up... After all that work in trying to find the best 6870 card. Oh well, doesn't matter either way. I wonder if Lion will be compatible with 3.2 or 4.2? We'll see what happens...

In any case I'll still be waiting on your replies here. And sorry for the extremely long post. I just like to get all the details out there so there's no back and forth of reply posts... Again, thanks for any input out there... :)

dude make a new thread...

No worries, I already got the advice needed and got this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...0-521-_-Product

Actually creating a new post wouldn't make any sense, since this is a related topic when it comes to compatible card issues, but I'm sorry for all the lengthy detail. I like to get everything "out on the table" and get the right answer the first time without having to go back and forth; days on end and whatnot. Thanks for your suggestion though...

Wait, I just noticed that you're running a 6970 card on your description there. How were you able to do that and run 10.6.7? Please explain. Also, there is a group that is needing someone like yourself to post how and what you did to make yours work here (if you haven't already done that):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...0-521-_-Product

Later... :D

Ok I get my Alienware M17xR3 tomorrow, and it has the ATI Mobility Radeon 6970m. THIS SAME CARD IS FOUND IN THE IMAC!

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop...mco=MjIwNTQyNjE

its featured on the 3.1ghz 27' imac

If I install the 10.6.8 update, what else will I have to do? I know that the laptop also has switchable graphics between intel 3000 and the 6970m

Drats! I was hoping this card might support 4x VGA via DVI>VGA and DP>VGA. sounds like only two are going to work under OS X.

Have you tried Graphics Enabler on NO? or changing the bios setting to 8x PCI-e?

I'm interested in this card, but only for 4up monitor support. and also as a second GPU.

Hey guys,

first of all: awesome work.

To read that a lot people get an 'unsupported' GOU to work is awesome.

Unfortuanly, it doesn't work for me.

I've got a XFX HD 6870.

The problem is, that when I copied the ATI6000controller.kext to the /System/Library/Extensions and paste the entire folder into kext helper, with the reboot nothing happened.

So I decided to read through the thread.

Well, some people talk about to add the Device's ID to the kext.

Well, I actually don't know hos the layout should look like;

I mean <string>Device ID</string> <key>ID-number</key>

Help about this would be awesome.

Also I used some installer which autoinstalls everything for me.

The problem was, that after that installation was finished, I wasn't able to boot anymore.

After that I used my boot-CD and tried to boot with GraphicsEnabler=No, everything was fine, the resolution was {censored} and the GPU wasn't detected but I were on my SL.

I read that I have to enable the GraphicsEnabler.

So I did GraphicsEnabler=Yes and...

My Graphiccard decided to run it's cooler with 100% and to output no Video-signal...

So I stuck at this point, maybe someone can help.

Thanks in advance.

Is there any way to get the Mobility 6650 card working? The device ID (0x6741) is listed in ATI6000Controller but it doesn't seem to be detected. I am sure it's 0x6741, double-checked using lspci from a debian live cd.

Using "GraphicsEnabler=no", I don't get more than 1024x768, unless I use "Graphics Mode"="1600x900x32" (my native resolution) - everything without QE/CI. The card isn't detected in System Profiler either.

When using GE=yes, I get a message like "ATI card POSTed, ..." when booting, then the system freezes. I have tried several framebuffers for AtiConfig, all of them with the same result.

I feel quite lonely with this card :angel:

I have the same card on my Acer Aspire 7750G. I have recompiled boot in Chameleon to assign a framebuffer to the card, and tried various ATI frambuffers using AtiConfig= at boot. Unfortunately they all result in graphics corruption, however, they do seem to detect the card and enable acceleration. I'm hopeful there may still yet be a solution or that Apple will release an updated ATI driver that will work.

What kind of 'graphics corruption'? And how did you recompile the boot file?

Also, are you on SL or Lion?

I get the same results on SL and Lion. Some frambuffers default to Radeon and show half the screen

with distored colors, but it is readable. Others framebuffers show colored bars, almost like a old CRT sync

problem. I followed a thread on TonyMacx86 that describes the proceedure for editing and compling

Chameleon source to modify the boot file.

Would LOVE to get this working
