After months of rumors pooling up under rumor mill, Apple finally shed some light on the speculation. Maybe. Accidentally. Today, Apple's UK site posted pre-release information on an upcoming Mac Pro. The 8 Core monster had just a simple caption under it's name in the store.

Mac Pro

Now quad-core or 8-core processing power.

Configure yours today.

Here's a screenshot:

Apple has since found the error on their site and fixed it. Also, there is no word yet on pricing for the Mac Pros.

Anyone else ready to see Leopard flying on one of these?

Sure Nuff' Right after I just went ahead and "CAVED IN" and bought my "Quad" .......LOL

Oh Well, at least I can upgrade it once the "Octo's" come down in price..... Although I cant even max these quads out yet on anything...YET...

2 quad-cores, an HT quadcore or a real 8-core?

IBM or Intel?

Catri, it's pretty obvious it would be intel based, as well as 2 "quad" core "clovertowns" from the reviews I've read at least........ :)

However, this assuption *COULD* be wrong.....

"Based on the fact that Intel declines to reveal whether Clovertown is a chip that was designed to be quad-core from the ground-up, Mr. Brookwood believes that the Clovertown is a product featuring two Woodcrest cores. The Woodcrest is a processor featuring Intel’s next-generation micro-architecture that was developed to be a dual-core chip with shared bus interface and L2 cache."

Anyway, they are definetly very likely to run at a much lower speed (although we all know ghz means nothing anymore compared to work done per clock cycle).

That's a good thing :thumbsup_anim:

Also if it lowers power consumption goes even lower, that would mean smaller electric bill.

Although my PC's and Powerbook G4 does keep my room warm.

I want a new iMac!!!!!!!!!!! I can then finally order one. I guess this confirms new hardware launch somewhere around March.

Too funny. But eight cores? They've gotta be 1 GHz each tops.

that would be highley unlikely if you are familiar with intels processor line.

it will most likely be a xenon, since this is a workstation, and the clock will most likley not be set to 1 ghz in the xenon line is by default set to that clock.

most likely, you will have a 2.1 and 2.4, if I remember the clock speeds on the quad cores right.

perhaps there was a 1.8 too.

anyway, not the greatest of news, but nice news annyway  it is actualy possible to jam in 8 cores in the mac pros at the moment, apple just dont retail them.

These 'leaks' happen to often for Apple to not be 'helping them out the door' so to speak.

This is a dumb question but what is the significance of clock speed over ghz? I always looked at the ghz when comparing pcs.

someone posted about this ages ago but accidentally said "mac book pro 8 core" and didnt have any proof, so no surprise, but thats funny that apple uk = the leak

HAHAHA!!! I just configured that Dell the same as My MacPro "Quad 2.66 Dual/Dual", (albeit vid card was more...but not THAT much more worth it to me, plus... I DID buy additional 2 gigs of OWC ram, so should be about the same) and it came to $3,482. Dam I got a good deal!!!!

DAAAAM! It really is cheaper to buy a Mac on the higher end. I'm so proud of myself..... :D :D :D :D :D :D

Whats really funny is I only bought the MacPro cause I just "wanted" one. I didn't need it, so that makes it all that much better!!! Dam I need a beer to celebrate, YEAH!!!! *heading to fridge*

(forgive my mindless ranting, but I truly am in a great mood now!!)

Dam... I just noticed something...if I keep going like this(if I buy 3 more macs), I'll have more Mac's than PC's.......oh sheet, maybe I am *slowly* becomming a switcher... :D:unsure:

Is that bad??????

not dumb at all, its definetly a valid question.

clock speed = the amount of hz so to say :P (they are the same!)

lol, ghz = the clockspeed, in ghz.... but emm, clock speed really doesnt mean that much anymore, 2ghz amd owns a 4ghz p4, easially, etc, its really wierd now....

It's far more important to look at how much work a proc can get done in one clock cycle, and that goes far beyond the scope of clockspeed alone. The use of pipelines, out of order execution etc etc is far more significant

Wait on that - - the whole line will be revamped....might see more HD's in iMACS too as well as better GPU for Macbooks.

Would hold off if at all possible.

This is what Apple and AMD have been saying for years. Before the Core Duo, Intel needed an extra 1 Gigahertz, just to keep up with AMD.

Now the rumor is AMD has some sort of KL9 that is supposed to be a duo core 2 killer and apple can use their chips too if they want.

Peace!

8 core would be cool.

Clovertowns are currently available in 1.6Ghz, 1.86Ghz, 2.33Ghz and 2.66Ghz parts. My guess is we'll see the 1.86's, 2.33's and 2.66's on Mac Pros.

AMD's new chip is the K8L (sometimes called K10) which allegedly offers significant performance increases over the AMD's current parts as well as a complete switch to a 65nm process. We'll see those in the fall.

Intel's also pushing it's 45nm process ahead for the "Penryn" chips which should allow increased clock speeds. The rest of this year will be interesting in the processor war. Still waiting for Apple's single socket, midrange desktop...
