Current OS X Version: 10.5.1

Install method: Kalaway EFI working? yes

Dual Boot: Vista/OSX via esc button at boot

Manufacturer: Alienware

Model: Dimension Area-51

Purchased Oct 4, 2005

Some install and hardware change notes

-this PC was repackaged as an Alienware but was actually a Shuttle PC. It's been hard to get the actual SPECS, but here is what I have... the install went very very well and only needed patches for video and network. It's been running for 3 days now smoothly, only issue is quicktime not playing properly when video is imbedded into safari, like when trying to watch a movie trailer on apple.com

-I upgraded the RAM to 2GB, altho I can see that this is not enough still and it's a little sluggish at times compared to my MBP 2.33 3GB RAM

-I also installed a second HD 500GB for the OS X install, funny thing was trying to squeeze it into the little shuttle PC form factor, the poor floppy is not hanging out the back :)

[1] Area-51® 5300

Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 531 w/ HT Technology 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB 1MB

Memory: 2GB Dual Channel Low-Latency DDR PC-3200 at 400MHz

Sound Card: Integrated 6-Channel Audio with SPDIF and Composite Out - AC'97

Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional with Service Pack 2 - NOT ANYMORE!

Chassis: Alienware® Area-51 5300 Small Form Factor Chassis - Black - Can you say SHuttle?

Motherboard: Alienware® Area-51 5300 Motherboard with Intel® 915G Chipset

Network Connection: Integrated High Performance Gigabit Ethernet - Marvel Yukon

System Drive: High Performance - Serial ATA - 250GB Serial ATA 7,200 RPM w/8MB Cache

Optical Drive: 16x Dual Layer DVD±R/W Drive w/LightScribe Technology - by LACIE

Removable Storage : 3.5" 1.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive - Black

Graphics Processor: NVIDIA® GeForce™ 6800 GT PCI-E 256MB DDR3

SATA/IDE working: yes

- I would like more speed and stability.. maybe ill try a diff build

USB Ports: All working

SATA/IDE:

Both work. Using the JMicron patch from the Kalyway setup for SATA, but can work without it.

DVD Burner: SATA LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1L. Works perfectly.

HDD: SATA WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0. WOrks Perfectly

LAN:

Currently using D-Link DFE-538TX, using ViaRhine.kext from tubgirl's 10.4.10 AMD release to get it working.

Notes:

Very compatible system for a $100 motherboard. My system has been running as smooth as slik with this setup. Only headache was getting the D-Link DFE-538TX card to work correctly as onboard LAN does not work. Had to install the ViaRhine.kext from tubgirl's 10.4.10 release to get the card fully working.

100% complete system :D

Also using a Logitech MX5000 Bluetooth Laser Keyboard and Mouse combo. They work flawlessly w/o any patching. The media controls to my surprise are also all working in the system and in iTunes.

The thing to keep in mind with this machine is that the Gparted cd used to set the boot flag to active will not boot when any add-on graphics card is being used. This is also the cause of many lock-ups when attempting to install/boot many linux distro's. Remove any add-on graphics card before installation and use the on-board graphics card to install. Upon successful install, reinsert the add-on video card and add the necessary kexts/drivers. Note: not EFI compatible.
