Apple Reports iPods Infected with Windows Virus

Our friends at Engadget are reporting that some of the new 5.5G iPods have been shipped to consumers with an unexpected bonus feature: the RavMonE.exe Windows virus. Oops. It seems there was a screwup at the factory which lead to some unplanned virus deployment. Instructions for removing the virus are on Apple's website.

Perhaps another reason to switch to OS X?

As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it.

;)

Very funny indeed... Why were they using Windows anyway?

Apple knows that the company they have making iPods uses Windows, it's their fault and they know about viruses and worms.

Windows is the mainstream and most used operating system, so hackers target it. No one writes viruses for Mac OS X or Linux as they are both based on Unix and noone wants to hurt Unix.

Also, then you've got the issue of writing "cross-platform malware".

Wow.

i don't' think apple should be using this as an opportunity to bash on windows. truth is they screwed up, they should have just admitted it and moved on. now they just come off as ignorant. osx may not be vunerable to the virus, but 99.9% of the focus of virus writers is on windows basically because they have the enormous market share in the os market. plus, apple should tell their contractors not to let employess surf for porn on company systems. especially windows systems....

Well, the machines were using Windows. The computer caught a virus. The virus in this case spreads via storage mediums, iPods included. So there is a small (SMALL) amount of blame to Windows and a LARGE amount of blame to the company putting the firmware on the iPods for being stupid.

Agree with "A Nonny Noose".

Original poster said "Perhaps another reason to switch to OS X?"

I would rather say "Perhaps another reason to stay away from Apple products?"

Why on earth would you blame Windows for poor QC at Apple manufacturers?

Apple doesn't make iPods. Sweatshop labor does, just like sweatshop labor makes the shirts you buy at Wal-Mart

they were being stupid by using windows which caused the virus to get there :P

why does a screw up with apple quality control get blamed on windows? would you say the same thing if the virus was for os x instead that you should switch to windows? what a cheap shot. and what a pathetic attempt at trying to blame windows.

And when this same sort of thing happened to creative, did anyone say it wasn't creatives fault? Of course not cause you like to shift blame if it has to do with apple.

You know, thats really f--k-d up that you true mac-a-philes would make fun of this situation. That truly shows the type of ignorance that alot of mac users spread and believe. Its not kewl, no matter how it happened, and apple should apologize for MORE of their lack of QC. But then again, 'ol steve knows you guys (true macaphiles) will buy whatever the hell he tries to shove down your throat (1st gen MBP's or MB's anyone????). Ahhhh, I see its not funny when it happens to you huh???? Frickin idiots, I hope any and or all of you that thinks this {censored} is funny gets a faulty Apple product that you OVERPAID for!! And for the record, yeah I got a MBP, but I also have way more PC's, and as a technology specialist (of ALL OS's and hardware) this {censored} aint funny. And before anyone asks, NO I dont own a ipod or any MP3 player for that matter, I'm too stupid to fall for all the "HYPE" I guess.

And now we get the "Everyone here drinks the Kool-Aid" argument.

First off, I don't remember it ever happening to Creative, but it's the fault of the sweatshop there. Substandard working conditions will elad to substandard products, but unfortunately, we buy everything from sweatshops now, so most of everything is substandard quality.

As to the "this ain't funny" thing, no it isn't funny, but nothing was intentional. It's different than a MacAddict disk from several years ago that carried a (Classic) Mac virus that was intentionally put on there. There is a difference, but it in no way makes things better for those that were infected by their iPods.

And I don't have an iPod either, FYI, so I guess we're both stupid

Hey, I wrote it first, and I'm posting from Windows.

That make me a hypocrite? Nope, just fair and balanced. And for real, not the Fox News version.

And just a note, how are MP3 players hyped? If you want thousands of songs to go with you in a small form factor, it's useful. If you don't, it's not. It's far from hype, it's just another useful gadget.

Also, I think when any major company {censored}s up it's funny. It's good to know even a streamlined money making machine is only mortal.

well. let us laugh for a while. later we will come up with more meaningful posts... i mean, dont take us so serious. just because i wrote that "i like aples style" concerning the virus, i dont mean to say: putting virii oder malware anywhere is ok, because its just for win. i can feel with you guys, but some joking should be allowed...

Kewl, kewl, I just hope that it is realized that this type of thing seems to be easily tolerated by Apple's community (of which I am also a part of), but let it have been MS (and yeah they do some jacked up {censored} too, believe me, I'd know) and everyone would of yelled bloody murder. I guess I went a lil off the chart, but I'm tired of these companies (ALL OF THEM) not being held accountable for their serious screw ups, especially ones that could possibly be catastrophic if the right amont of computers are affected/infected by those users that are not as technically savy as you and I. I guess I'd hoped that when I decided to get my mac that I was becomming a part of something "different", but as of late all I see is more of the same.............. :(:thumbsdown_anim::thumbsdown_anim:

Here is an exact comment from when creative accidentally shipped some zen's with a virus on it:

I guess that's what you get for buying cheap mp3 players. Try getting an iPod next time. They've actually got some quality control. You get what you pay for.

Here's the original link, 2nd comment:

So whats the excuse now that its happened to apple too? I'd like to hear it.

By the way, apple's response to this for customer service was beaten by mcdonalds. Pretty bad if you ask me. Here's the link to the original article:

Everyone place the blame where it is. Apple should be ashamed for trying to blame windows for their failure with quality control. And yes it is their fault. They decide how it is manufactured. Therefore they can be held responsible when it goes wrong. This wouldn't have been nearly as bad for apple if they had done the same thing mcdonalds did when it happened to them.
