So my question is about Rosetta: do we profit from any 10.4.8 Rosetta improvements at all right now since translate/ translated .8 could not be included in this update?

Has anybody heard anything from aRt/ SemjaZa? I haven't. He would be the only one at the moment who might be capable of decrypting Rosetta, right?

Real Macs have some Spotlight issues with 10.4.8 according to the website MacFixit.com:

Spotlight issues
Some readers have reported problems with regard to Spotlight after applying Mac OS X 10.4.8, including an inability to access the function.

MacFixIt reader Mario writes:

"Since upgrading to 10.4.8 I cannot use the spotlight button in the menu. I use a PowerBook 1.67 GHz. It is possible to open spotlight window via the shortcut, but not directly from the menu, when clicking on the blue loupe nothing happens."

If Spotlight does not function properly after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.8, make sure that your startup volume (or any other volumes you desire to search) are not listed in the "Privacy" tab of the Spotlight pane in System Preferences. Some users have reported that volumes become inadvertently placed here after the update.

In other cases, you can resolve spotlight issues by using the mdutil command-line utility in Terminal, turn off indexing for each of your drives. First use the following commands (in the Terminal, located in Applications/Utilities) to turn off Spotlight:

* sudo mdutil -i off /Volumes/your_hard_drive_name

Then use mdutil to remove the indexes from each drive

* sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/your_hard_drive_name_1

Physically remove the .Spotlight directories from the root of your hard drive with these commands:

* cd /

* sudo rm -fr .Spotlight-V100

(make sure to carefully type the "rm" command -- a typo could result in deletion of critical files.)

Use mdutil again to turn indexing back on for each drive

* sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/your_hard_drive_name_1

* sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/your_hard_drive_name_2

Spotlight will now re-index all drives, potentially solving some issues.

i become a message in terminal:

"Could not set indexing status for volume."

and now? :happymac:

i become a message in terminal:

"Could not set indexing status for volume."

and now? :)

Boot from your Mac OS x86 install DVD (10.4.3 is the fastest to boot), run disk utility from the installer menu and repair permissions from there (to fix Spotlight issues etc.).

Tried to install the JaS 10.4.8....Message at end of installer stated that I should try installing again. I popped in my 10.4.6 DVD, rebooted, and ran Disk Repair from the DVD. Rebooted and everything is fine now! Spotlight and Samba!

I'm not sure if trying JaS 10.4.8 had anything to do with it, I probably just needed to actually reset the Disk Permissions from the DVD instead of my install.

Thanks for everyones help!

I probably just needed to actually reset the Disk Permissions from the DVD instead of my install.

JaS has stated there is a problem with one file in the installer. If you don't fix that file before installing, then you need to boot your install DVD and repair permissions.

See posting 273 in this thread.

i've been holding off doing any updates since my 10.4.6 system has been working so well for me. anyhow, i got tempted and i did the JaS 10.4.8 update last night. the update was successful and displayed the 10.4.8 in about my mac. afterwards, i noticed that my safari and few other programs would not work anymore, when clicking on the app, it would just open up and close immediately. thses apps includes, safari, yahoo IM, adium... i ran permission fix just inacse but same results.

i am going to reinstall 10.4.6 but wanted to know if anyone else has had the same experience. my scenario, i went directly from 10.4.6 to 10.4.8

I installed kikos 10.4.8 but i didnt install the 10.4.4 foundations framework and i installed opengl.frameworks from jas 10.4.7 and the atindrv.kext and the other x1000 wext were from 10.4.8 and all is working spot on for me

tho i did install itunes and quicktime before the update ..................

NICE WORK FELLAS
