Today, Apple updated the web browser that comes standard on all Macs: Safari. Yes, it's true, Safari has been updated to 3.1, which has been available to developers for a long time. In addition to Web Standards improvements, this updated how well this browser functioned on Windows...which has been a complaint since it was released.

Adds support for CSS 3 web fonts

Adds support for CSS transforms and transitions

Adds support for HTML 5 <video> and <audio> elements

Adds support for offline storage for Web applications in SQL databases

Double clicking on the Tab Bar opens new tab

And much more! For a full list of updates and changes, including those made to Windows versions, click here. The update is 39MB in size and requires a restart.

lol, same old 'works fine here', it's only a Safari update and it's not like it will break hack setups. ;)

Of course you people will not have a problem with the new safari! it is neither a security update or actual upgrade... it is just like an iTunes update!!!!

Has anyone looked to see how well this passes the Acid 3 test? I've been running trunk builds of webkit for the past few weeks, it's noticeably faster than Safari. I'll test this update later and see if its faster...

I use Camino, I found it to be better with the adblocking and caching works proper. I dont think caching has been fixed in this version actually, when I restart Safari it doesn't keep all images in cache.

BTW, for some reason spellcheck in Camino is broken in these forums for some reason.

Seeing the standards support of Safari 3.1 just gave me a standards compliant XHTML 1.1 orgasm :D

Come on, Apple.. Is it really that hard to make your apps have drop shadows on Vista? :D

Safari faster then firefox 2? Well that claim'll be obsolete when Firefox 3 is released at the end of the month. :P

I dunno, Safari is pretty freakin' fast. It does tend to stall on some pages for me though.

The new version has the faster Javascript execution, which Firefox 3 beta has too. Firefox 3 is much faster than Firefox 2, but Safari still launches the fastest.

I also see that Safari for windows is now out of it's beta stage. I'm definitely gonna be checking it out.

I'm on Safari for WIndows now and that's the fastest browser I've seen for a long time. Great work Apple.

Nobody...

except there's more Vista users than OS X users -- so that's a big market.

I think Apple excluded drop shadows so it wouldn't be too distracting -- or maybe there's an inconstancy between XP and Vista?

I haven't been into it for a while, but I think Vista does have drop shadows in all it's windows. However, I'd rather have a speedy Safari browser than a drop shadow I'll never even look at.
