Free .mac-style storage

wow box.net now offers free 1gb storage? I used to pay 2.99/month with them for 1gb storage for a while. nice. I really liked their service.

That's fantastic, but a bit slow, compared to .mac.

Is there a way to automatically synchronize as we used to do with .mac?

Just so you know, when you get 5 friends it says "you've signed up 5 friends - your account will be upgraded within 24 hours."

I've been very impressed with the service thus far, although B512 is right - it would be nice to be able to sync things.

They have an API - anyone want to write a plugin?

Edit: As far as speeds go, it's maxing out my upload at a poor 55kbps here.

I have to agree that this looks to have potential...although it does appear to have a 10MB cap on any individual file. This can be somewhat of a pain considering I do have some files that are larger than that size. Perhaps the free referal upgrade can help with that issue as well. Is it ok to stick that link in mine as well, or would it be better served in the referral forum?

Hey, more storage. I will bite. I mean I got Gmail and I got 2.5 or something gigs there; now add another gig. Not bad.

I looked into using this while retaining .macs feature set and the answer on whether it is possible is... well... kinda.

That user managed to get iDisk to work by making .Mac point to a different IP other than idisk.mac.com. The site is in German, but if you manage to make an account, I don't think there's a file size limit. However, the server is really unreliable and doesn't allow for .Mac style syncing or anything...

One day we will get the perfect .Mac server clone. One day. *sigh*

My uploads keep stalling and giving me errors 43, 36, and 2122. I finally got one uploaded and now it only appears online, not in the Finder. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, since I've been unable to justify the expense of a .Mac account this seems great. I think SpyMac has been onto this idea for awhile though. I have heard that their services have sort of been unreliable however. There's also a pretty affordable iDisk like solution that came out recently called JungleDisk, price doesn't seem too bad. I'd be up for 5GB of free storage on Box.net.

reminds me of the days where myspace was an online storage site instead of a blight upon modern society. good times.

If you run Windows as well, it works as a "Web Folder" that you can set up as a shortcut in Explorer.

Also, someone commented elsewhere that you can't rename the desktop alias you get on the Mac from "dav", but you can create a folder with any name you like on your box.net account, and then set the server address on your Mac to that folder, like www.box.net/dav/Name_I_Like, and the desktop icon will be "Name_I_Like".
