How did you do the 10.5.3 update?
I updated to 10.5.2 using Kalyway and then 10.5.3 using his package. Before that I installed the v4 installer from scottangel.  THe V5 blows for me
knobi,Did your 8400GS work with 10.5.2?
Absolutely.  Only with v4 installer.  Not the latest v5.  It bricks the machine.  BE wared
Kronoid,

Hope we can get your 8600GS going...but...looks like another successful 8800GT user above. ;)

John

Yeah, the 8800 is looking like a safer bet. I'm afraid the 8600 may be a little more difficult. But then again it can't be more difficult than the 8400 :(.

knobi, did you have to edit the NVCAP string to get your 8400 GS to work? What was the procedure you used to get it to work? I can't get my 8400 GS to work. Thanks.

I see you have the 8400GS and I modified the kext file for the 8600GS.

Oh well...if you can hold off until tomorrow I can redo the kext file for the 8400GS.

Edit update:

The above attached kext file was edited for 8400GS...not the 8600GS. My mind turned to mush after awhile.... ;) !

finally managed to get mac working. Before i list my issues, let me list my hardware specs.

Gigabyte EP35-DS3L

C2D E8400

4gig DDR2 800MHz memory (corsair XMS2 2x2gig)

ASUS EN9600GT 512mb graphics memory

Pioneer DVD writer (SATA).

Ok basically followed as the guide. Installing 10.5.1 then update to kalyway combo update 10.5.2, kalyway kernel package, leopard graphics update and last was to use pcwiz installer.

Everything seems to work accept sound and shutdown even though i use the installer the second time except that this time i only selected the sound drivers, still the sound is not working. Secondly i could not get my graphics card working.

Perhaps its better to document my installation experiences here.

first i tried burning the kalyway 10.5.1 iso to a DVD-RW media and it works, not sure what pcwiz meant exactly that DVD-RW media may not work for the installation.

Secondly after the kalyway kernel installation my computer reboot twice.

So far 3 things bother me right now which is the sound, shutdown and graphics card.

If anyone has a solution please tell me what i can do to resolve those issues.

Update:

I had just installed the 10.5.3 update and all is working except for the sound and graphics. Shutdown and restart worked without any issue. Well i am not sure if i would call this update safe to install for you guys but would really appreciate who ever installed this update to report your success here.

I am still waiting for some kind soul out there to assist me in getting my sound and graphics card working.

My sound is Realtek ALC888 and graphics card is ASUS EN9600GT.

oh by the way the bootcamp is not working. The error message is :

You must update your computer's Boot ROM firmware before using this setup assistant.

And here is the screenshot to prove the 10.5.3 update: About This Mac

Thank you.

Ok, answering my own question: I managed to get my own language installed very easily from a retail Leopard DVD :P

But here's something weird, whenever I shut down my machine, all the fans and lights go out like they normally would... then maybe 5 seconds later it boots up on it's own :P Holding down the power button really shuts this thing down, but is there a way to get the shutdown work properly? Like the guide said, I installed the Speedstep-kernel, and the only updates I installed later were for iLife and iWork.

This is probably OT, but this morning after booting into Leopard, right after getting onto the desktop my display started flickering, dimming, then there were some crazy black and white lines going all over the screen... which have been gone since I rebooted. I thought my 8800GT was overheating or something, but I didn't encounter any anomalities after gaming for 2 hours? I wonder what caused this? :P

Weird, i have the same issue (power-up on it's own after some time).

I thought it's my power supply unit that doesn't switch off correctly.

So it seems to be some settings in Bios?!?!?

I have the reboot kernel...

Hi ~pcwiz,

Thanks for the guide it's very easy to follow.

I am having a bit of trouble though. Initially I could not get the kalyway dvd to boot using the internal sata dvdrw drive but I got it working using an external usb dvd drive. Followed the guide and everything seems to go OK. When I restart I get the apple and spinning circle then the screen goes grey and just sits there, it will not boot.

Can anyone suggest anything I can do? I have reinstalled a number of times now and I have changed the order of the drives on the sata ports (I only have a DVD drive and a HD at the moment and these are on the two seperate yellow sata ports) but nothing is working.

My specs are as follows:

Mobo: GA-P35-DS4

CPU: CORE 2 DUO E8400

Video: RADEON HD 2600XT

HD: WD5000AAKS

DVD: PIONEER DVR-215

RAM: 4GB OCZ

Please boot in verbose mode to see what the error is. When the system is about to start loading (right before Loading Darwin/x86), tap F8 on your keyboard fast to get to the boot: prompt. Type in -v and watch the messages go by. Record any errors and where the messages stop, and post them here.

Kronoid,

While poking around I went to the OSx86 Hardware Compatibility page and found info how others were able to run the 8400GS.

http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...L_10.5.2#nVIDIA

Looks like most used the NVinject 0.2.1 installer and also had to edit the NVCAP string of the file.

Anyway here's how to edit the NVCAP string to 04000000 00000300 04000000 00000007 00000000 :

Right Click /System/Library/Extensions/NVInject.kext choose "Show Package Contents"

Copy Info.plist to ~/Desktop

Open Info.plist copy with Plist Editor

Replace NVCAP string with 04000000 00000300 04000000 00000007 00000000

Save copy of info.plist and copy back to NVInject.kext contents

Hey wait...what the heck...I just did it...was curious on how to do it.

Edit: Go to the next post and read the links on how to install a kext file! Kext Helper is the easiest.

Tell us how it goes!

Best,

John V.

Johnny V:  bro i just tried this solution twith my xfx nvidia 8400 gs 256 mb.  but it failed. after reboot i am stuck at the blue screen.  is there anything else i can do?? cheerz bro

Try both of the NVinject's that Johnny V posted. Also make sure that they are installed properly, use something like OSX86Tools or Kext Helper b7 to install the kext. If it still doesn't work try NVinstaller v.41 for your 8400GS:

anyone here have trouble with p35 ds4 and its usb and firewire?

i got the USB working with

rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/caches

I'm not sure I understand Helper b7. Do you still need to run something like NVinject 0.2.1 or other NVinject installer like V4, then edit the NVCAP? If so where does Helper b7 comes in?

Thanks.
