anyone with parallels or vmware fusion get stuck at "Boot from hard drive" or in vmware a "b0 error" ive flagged the windows partition and it still has same errors. i am also doing the darwin bootloader.

Have you started it in VMware via BootCamp? Then i get the same error.

I installed XP with the VMware Wizard -> perfect!

FromMac2Hack, installing the netkas 9.2.0 SpeedStep kernel fixed everything up for me, including restart :thumbsdown_anim:

I'm not sure exactly what I did, but I reinstalled the netkas sleep kernal and audio patch and that seemed to fix it. I managed to fix any remaining issues with tutorials on here. The system is rockin' along, just like a real Mac! :(

For users having problems with semi-supported video cards TigerDirect has a XFX GeForce 8800 GT 512MB card for $129.99 after rebate.

I have the same card, but OverClocked, made by EVGA. Card has zero problems and now running with dual monitors....that card is on sale too for $144.99.

I'm just starting to buy all my components to put my machine together...all based on this thread!! I can't wait until I get everything ordered and it all comes in so I can start working on it. Just ordered my Gigabyte DS3P and will be ordering memory and CPU soon. All that is left is the video. I was actually looking at XFX card earlier this w/e...trying to decide between this or a 8800GTS 512mb (g92). Can get one one (used) for $180, but I haven't been able to find a lot of success stories with that particular variation so I don't know if I want to deal with the headaches or go with a proven card. As I write this, I'm leaning towards the latter, though any insight would be appreciated.

I'm planning on dual-booting with Vista...if anyone has any experience with some light gaming through Parallels / VMWare, I'd be interested in hearing what that is like (FPS's). I can't imagine it is all that great...but ya never know.

btw -- great thread! -_-

Also Dual Booting with Vista with Darwin Bootloader.

Only problem that RealTimeClock is everytime wrong when i boot into Vista.

VMware with XP runs also great!

Check my above post with a link to punk92 installers.

I tried that but it didnt work either. I got a black screen or the white screen with the apple froze. I had to install OSX a third time from scratch. ;)

my tip to avoid using the forum's search engine and use google instead.

I have been trying that, thanks for the tip.

I got myself into trouble last night when I tried to install Vista. It ruined my OSX install and I didn't have a backup. All the files were there but I could not boot off the OS system. I was able to install a fresh OSX on an empty drive and use the Migrate Assistant Tool (in the Applications> Utilities folder) to move most of my Apps, system settings and files over. But I learned my lesson about having a backup. There might have been a way for you to boot up in bios or Kalyway disk and remove the offending video driver without a reinstall...but I'm just new to this stuff...I'm sure the info is out there. Anyway I'm working on my perfect system then I'm going to clone it to a separate hard drive partition using SuperDuper! The unregerstered version will let you clone a bootable system.

Is this better than Time Machine? Because I backed my system up to an external USB drive using time machine and then after the graphics card drive messed my system up I restored it using the Time Machine back up, but when I restarted it , it wouldn't boot. Thanks.

Yep I know what you've been though...at least the install becomes easier with experience. ;)

I'm not really sure, with my limited OSx86 experience, which is better for system backup SuperDuper! or Time Machine. I think the drive/partition needs to be blessed as startup...but I'm not sure how to do that. That's why I'm reluctant to install Windows again as it messed up my first build and couldn't boot off the OS X drive even though it was on it's own hard drive. My latest OS X build is perfect - all apps are working 100%...I don't want to mess it up again.

Hope someone will chime in about how to boot-up from a restored system disk, as I've done many searches and it's still not clear how to get there from here.

I found this info about Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper! Looks like Carbon Copy Cloner is the better! Wonder how Time Machine ranks?

Copy and Paste:

"Almost every Mac backup program can handle common pieces of metadata such as resource forks, file permissions, and Finder labels. But metadata comes in many shapes and sizes. What about access control lists (ACLs), or HFS+ extended attributes? And what about hard links, including those for folders (introduced in Leopard)? More than a dozen varieties of metadata can be set for a given file, and lots of current backup software ignores a good bit of it. The result is that what appears to be a perfect duplicate of your data might in fact be missing some important attributes. I've been using a command-line tool written by Nate Gray called Backup Bouncer to automate the testing of how well various programs handle these many sorts of metadata. I haven't tested all 60 programs yet, but of those I have tested, the only one with a perfect score is Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1. Not even the venerable SuperDuper 2.5 does as thorough a job (though it comes quite close)."

Thanks. I will check on that since Time Machine doesnt seem to work to restore my system. I can back it up, but when the time to restore from the back ups comes, it doesnt work.

Now what is bugging me is this graphics card driver problem. I have tried several different ones and I alway get a black screen after re-boot. This sucks because if I dont have my graphics card fully working I dont need a Mac. The only reason I need a Mac is to learn Final Cut Pro. But Final Cut needs the graphics card fully working. So even though my install works fine on lower resolution, it defeats the whole purpose of having a Mac for me. Do you have any advice PCWIZ? I already had to install OSX 5 times while trying to install a graphics driver. (I will sure try Superduper or carbon Copy Cloner this time before trying to install any other drivers. Im tired of re-installing OSX. I can already do it with my eyes closed :D )

The audio also doesnt work but for audio I will just buy a PCI audio card. For the video card I dont know. If I cant get the 8400 GS to work I will have to buy another one. What video card is the most supported that would work with this guide out of the box?

Here is what my system information says about my Nvidia 8400 GS 256mb graphics card, just in case it helps any:

Again sleep vs reboot issue....

When i know install sleep kernel instead of existing shutdown kernel:

-) is it possible without problems?

-) what is the drawback, which problems do i have when i shutdown (with sleep kernel).

One "problem" i have remaining:

In System Preferences i can't open "Keyboard&Mice".An empty screen appears and in the tab it says "loading"

I'm going to try Kalyway 10.5.1 + 10.5.2 Combo update + Graphics update + kernels next week with my P35-DS3R. But first, I need to replace my incompatible GeForce 9600GT with something else, is 8800GT with 512 mb a safe choice? Am I correct in thinking that it works 100% after the 10.5.2- and graphics updates without needing anything else?

Cheers :(

>is 8800GT with 512 mb a safe choice? Am I correct in thinking that it works 100% after the 10.5.2- and graphics updates without needing anything else?

I have the EVGA 8800GT with 512MB and it works 100% of the time.

You will need to install, after you install the combo 10.5.2 update and Leopard graphics update, Scott Dangle's NVInstaller v.41 that can be found here: http://scottdangel.com/blog/?page_id=20

Yeah, I'm also having a hell of a time with a Nvidia 8400 GS. The Nvidia drivers in the guide don't work with it and neither does any of the several I tried. I have pretty much decided to get another card. But I was trying to avoid the more expensive 8800. Mainly because it will really suck if I spend the money and it still doesn't work. Anybody know how is the 8600? Hard to get it to work as well? How about ATI? It seems to be easier to get ATI to work than Nvidia. But I wonder if the HD 2400 would do instead of the more expensive 2600 for the same reasons.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Kronoid,

While poking around I went to the OSx86 Hardware Compatibility page and found info how others were able to run the 8400GS.

OK I modified the two below NVInject.kext files for the the 8400GS 256MB

Try installing the first NVInject.kext file.

The easiest way to install is using Kext Helper.

Then restart!

It's that easy!

If the first file doesn't work properly with your card, then try the second NVInject.kext file.

Tell us how it goes!

Best,

John V.

Attached is the 0.2.1 NVInject.kext file for the 8400GS 256MB with the modified NVCAP string of 04000000 00000300 04000000 00000007 00000000 based on the Hardware Compatibility page:

Regrading the above install of the NVinject.kext file.

Looks like it's a little more work to install than just replacing the NVinject.kext file and restarting.

The best and easiest is to use Kext Helper.

It's drag and drop and runs all the root commands needed so we avoid using the Terminal...yeah!

Here's the more difficult way using the Terminal.

This link describes "How to load a kext"

Here too...find "NVinject installation" topic:

My setup:

Core 2 Duo E6750

P35-DS3R

GeForce 8800GT 512mb

SATA DVD-burner

Woohoo! I did exactly like the guide told me to, then used the NVInstaller v.41, and I'm up and running :( Thank you very much...

But here's one thing - this isn't exactly a major problem, but how do I get other languages installed? I suppose I need the retail Leopard DVD? When I tried to set Leopard to my own language, it was a weird mix of my language and english.
