omg, sorry about the double post. Not quite sure why it did that, the page did kind of wig out on me after submitting.

Installed Power Management Bundle and solved my battery & ac problem. Things working as they should. My only projects left to get working on this is the Internal Mic/Audio Out, and the HP SD Card reader.

Hey guys I'm still here lurking about and messing with my system in the background - I'll give you a little heads up as to where I am at with things:

First off - after I made the videos on youtube I wanted to try GUID and V7 of pc_efi - well no dice.. after dicking with it for 4 hours and grumbling about losing my perfect installation from the format I gave up and reinstalled following my guide and 5.2 (which is still rock solid) so my comp was offline for a couple days which is why I havn't been around. Oh I also found out that you need a preinstalled copy of tiger to make guid work correctly in leopard.. so bugger that.

Also, from what I've read even though there are some benefits to GUID (like 128 partitions per drive, or having a 2 terrabyte install disk) I have no use for those features. Stella tells me that with his install there is some speed gains, but as a bit of a loss for stability. Although his xbench scores have gone up 20 points now using it.

Well my system is back to its perfected state now, yay for having everything I need to install on a second drive. I would stick with 5.2 for now of the pc_efi because it is rock solid.

Thanks for keeping this posting steaming along - I like that people are helping out and sharing lots of information.

If you have any questions, PM to me and I'll reply along with a ' faq ' of sorts after I get them.

Oh - and to answer - yes you CAN update to 10.5.1 directly from Apple - they think you have a real mac so it works.

Good luck on your builds !

-Onetrack

Are you sure about the Updating directly from System Update? I thought you couldn't do that unless you are running the vanilla OS X kernel... And so far, the vanilla kernel is very picky to get to run. I personally have made the JaS -> ToH RC2 -> Update ToH Kernel -> EFI v52 route, and when I tried the vanilla mach_kernel the thing wouldn't move from the Grey Apple. But with the updated ToH kernel, the thing works amazingly well, stable as hell too.

Would you care expounding a bit more about the "Apple thinks you have real macs" part? When I run System Profiler it says "Mac" and then "ACPI" or something like that. Is this a "real mac" too?

Thanks OneTrack

I just got 10.5.1 working all peachy thanks to your wonderful little guide.

It's been...an adventure.

I went through two botched installs because I was greeted with a blank screen and a flashing cursor twice; the bootloader didn't install. I was confused and then decided perhaps the Kalyway CD tripped over itself somewhere (I presume that's what it's for, installing the bootloader), so on my third attempt I used one the other disk utility on there (the ASR one, I believe), to temporarily format it as GUID to nuke the MBR table and then reformatted the disk using the proper disk utility, and I did a test boot (before installing), and sure enough, the darwin bootloader came up spouting an error about not being able to find some plist file (boot config, I presume). Success. I then installed the BrazilMac patched DVD, and, in case pc_efi was FUBARing the bootloader, I did the regular patched install first. Booted perfect. Afterwards I booted into single user mode to set up pc_efi and replaced the proper kexts as per the guide, and presto! it works. I'm not sure what went wrong the first two times, but I'm damn glad it works. Did the software update, and it's all operational, as if it were a real Mac.

Also, as a bit of advice, when you first put in the BrazilMac DVD (or whichever patched setup you're using), open the terminal and copy over all the data you put on your flash drive for this project onto the hard disk you want to install to. That way, you can simply use the terminal in Kalyway the second time around, therefore saving you a lot of time, as it boots much faster than the install DVD.

It's been fun.

post-3048-1196578954_thumb.png

i followed the instructions to the guide exactly, and everything works...except booting up.

I just get the

"You need to restart your computer... grey screen error"

booting with -v the last few lines are:

Mac OS version:

Not yet Set

Kernel version:

Dawrin Kernel Version 9.0.0: Tue Oct 9 21:35:55 PDT 2007; Tree:xnu-1228~1/RELEASE_I386

it stays there forever.

I replaced the files, dsmos, AppleSMBIOS, and NVinject, and applied the patch (i used version 6), deleted power mangement, and rebooted, and thats what i got.

My specs are in my sig, the only change is now my tiger install is no longer there.

Anyone who can help me figure out why it's not working would be lovely.

Is it an silly error that i'm too stupid to find myself?

thanks in advance.

Here's my experience:

Retail Leopard DVD patched with BrazilMac Patch

Kalyway make Bootable HD CD

EFI 5.2

I went through all the instructions as written. Had problems first of all getting Kalyway to boot. Fixed this by doind an F8 then pressing -s and enter - No idea what this does but seemed to give me lots of text on the screen and an option to boot using some command line (which I did).

Kalyway went fine, then installed as requested Leopard patched DVD. Went fine.

Had problems booting back into the installer DVD to perform the Terminal bits - eventually got in there by pressing F8 on boot and doing a -s I think. Did the Terminal bits.

Applied EFI 5.2 and rebooted. Had grey screen with apple and a do not enter icon. Fiddled around with BIOS to no avail. Fixed by plugging my SATA leopard drive into the purple SATA connectors on my main board (were previously in the orange).

Booted perfectly.Performed 10.5.1 update without a problem.Everything working out the box except for sound - trying to work that one out.System info reports a 4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo - I wish! I have a 2.4 Core 2 Duo. Also, repost my memory as being 41486 Mhz Ram - no idea what's going on here - not really fussed.

My system boots in 35 seconds and is just so responsive compared to Vista. No nasty errors anywhere - seems nice and stable.Just need to sort out the sound....Any ideas on the crazy processor info? If I click on more info it doesn't want to give me any (see image below).

THANKS FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE THESE GUIDES AND CONTRIBUTED.Oops - forgot pic :(

Check this out: http://netkas.org/?page_id=21. "PC EFI is a technology to run Mac OS X on any pc with close to macs specs, without any modifications to osx kernel."

One of the main reasons for using PC_EFI IS to run the vanilla kernel. With PC_EFI, OS X thinks that you're running a real Mac, and (correct me if I'm wrong) basically acts as an "emulator" and a "translator" between the BIOS and the kernel. It emulates the EFI found on a real Mac, and translates the appropriate EFI instructions from the kernel into BIOS instructions for an X86PC, and then provides a response to the kernel that is in line with how a real Mac would respond.

I have the same problem... I haven't found a way to fix it... But it worked perfectly in Tiger. Maybe copying a .kext from Tiger to Leopard might work? I also might break your install... If I find a solution, I'll let you know.

I just updated to 10.5.1

It only took like 1 or 2 minutes, plus reboot and fskck -fy check.

If you've installed everything correctly, it'll let you do the update no problem.

For people having trouble with the System Profiler. Trying using the AppleSMBIOS.kext that came with pc_efi instead of the vanilla kext.

I myself am still having trouble with Sigmatel 9200 and Intel 3945ABG and ATIX1400 on my system.

Goodluck!

Oddly enough, I have never used the Kalyway Disc or installed Tiger in anyway or form on my system (Leopard was my first attempt) and my system is running fine. Used the patched leo dvd for everything. granted it did take a long freaking time.

who knows.

I just added another 2gb of ram (total 4gb running dual channel).

It now lists my ram as 66Mhz in speed. Very odd. seems fast enough.

...now if only I could get my sound to work.....

Thanks to anyone who can clear this up for me. The guide isn't clear enough to me about needing or not the vanilla os x mach_kernel, so I'm sorry if I'm being a bit thick. :)

I tried this, and i still can't get into Leopard, any other ideas?

All I know is that as soon as I moved the main drive to the Purple SATA port it worked.

If you hit F8 on boot up and select the -v diagnostic mode you should see any error messages that are causingthe problem. Maybe you can figure out what the problem may be from there - that's how I did it as it had an error like 'can't find root device' - I figured it couldn't find the drive so hence I tried using the other SATA ports.

Good luck. Very much a trial and error thing. Loving my new mac - using Parallels and XP now to use my pc only bits (which are few and far between).

Goodbye Mr Gates - it's been fun (apart from Vista that is).

Thanks a lot for your great howto, worked perfect!!

All I had to do additionally was to use the AppleHDAPatcher for onboard sound (Bad Axe 2 MoBo).

Than I installed the original Logitech drivers for my Quickcam Pro.

One issue bothers me....I'm still not able to use my second display on my GeForce 7300GS, tried several files, natit dual 0.2, change the NVCAP value, and so on....but I'll try some other things....

Here a Screenshot:

I've got it working on an ECS 945GZTM v1.0 (49.99), Celeron D 420, and PNY 7300 GT 256MB Video card. Working great. Thanks for all your hard work on the guide Onetrack.

One quick not. The HDA patcher didn't work for me. Used skippyretards drivers. The same one I used on tiger. Didn't expect it to work, but it was late and I figured what the heck. It worked.

Hit F8 at the Darwin promt, and type

-f

This will force the new kexts and delete cached drivers. Worked for me! HTH

unfortunately, still no luck

i tried -f, -x, cpus=1, and nothing.

i'm thinking i may need to reinstall it again...

For some reason i am not able to successfully install. I've been there since the beginning, 10.4.3 bur neither ToH or Brazil worked for me. I have Pentium D and Intel mobo and both work perfect with Tiger but Leopard no luck. Pentium D has SSE3 and all the jazz requqired for smooth install but all i get is either cursor blinking in the corner r rebooting after the installation and patching. I have followed the instructions exactly as said and still no thing...

Luckily, PB can run it but there is no excitement in just popping the disk in. I am getting Kalyway Leopard disk that promises easy install and EFI emulation so I will just wait and see.

My Xbench score: 105.69

Use NVinject - will work right away for dual display for you.

I've installed NVinject, the version mentioned in this guide, but just one display works...that one on the Analog Output, the DVI isn't working, when I switch the displays, until the first reboot, the DVI works..... :)

UUps, there was an mistyping of my Machines configuration its not a Asus EN7600GS, its a Asus EN7300GS :)

I'm in the market for a new MB anyhow, and want to get something as close to current as possible (P35 or higher) so I can upgrade cpu next year. Has anyone else apart from PLAS had success with a p35 chipset? intel MB even? I'm leaning towards an ASUS p5kr, if anyone has success/failure with these breeds please let me know.

Cheers.

If you're running the ToH kernel because you system needs it (i.e. SSE2 only, non-Intel CPU, etc.), then running Software Update and installing the 10.5.1 patch will certainly screw up your installation and you're either need to reinstall or repair the system.

Now, I'm not sure about running Software Update when you have the ToH kernel simply because there wasn't anything else around, and your system will support the vanilla kernel perfectly. If this a production system that must not be down for any length of time, I would recommend against it. If this is just an experimentation system, why not try it? Let us know :) .

The worst that will happen is that you're lose a near-perfect installation of an OS, which probably took hours if not days to get up and running properly, plus possibly countless grey hairs from blinking cursors, incorrect partitions, funky kexts, and those damn ACPI-related errors. That's not too bad, right? :P (Actually, I've been trying to get OSX86 running properly ever since 10.4.1......Days spent installing, repartitioning, reinstalling, reformatting, repairing permissions, re----, re---- *sigh*)

I think I still have the 10.4.1 installation disc (as well as 10.4.4, .5, .6), the ATI Framebuffer driver from way-back, that I think was hand-coded to allow videos to play semi-smoothly.... Those were the good ol' days...

Same here, I was thinking the GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0 which has Realtek ALC889A for sound.
