Hi @D3v1L and @eSaF,

Ok I've updated BIOS to F12L now 😉 

I was a bit scared to update because gigabyte said that you could not downgrade from F12 and I didn't want to risk not being able to run my old High Sierra incase I had problems with Catalina. So I've gone for F12L.

For clarity - I'm trying to boot Catalina (10.5.7) - not High Sierra. High Sierra is on my backup drive incase I have problems with this install.

After I upgraded the BIOS it did not boot first - it lost all settings even though I chose INTACT bios method. 

Anyway, I set the BIOS settings that seem to be recommended. 

- CSM Disabled

- Security Device Disabled

- Aperture 512MB

- ErP Enabled

Here is my experience booting with each  EFIs

With My existing EFI
It booted ok  - maybe a little slower than before.
On shutdown, it spent around 1m on desktop screen, then it went black and after 2 minutes of the fans still going it eventually shutdown completely! A bit slow but it actually turned off!


With @eSaF EFI
It booted ok - possibly a bit faster than with my EFI
On shutdown - it shutdown very quickly - maybe 20-30s but then restarted immediately.


With @D3v1L EFI
It failed to boot but different to last time. Here is a picture. It did not hang. It seems to have detected a problem, then it shutdown and restarted.

I'm going to double check the BIOS settings - I think I might have forgotten the 4G one.

Hah setting Above 4G stopped it booting  - which makes sense in hindsight as I realise that I only have the RX580 4Gb version
I enabled XHCI handoff and Power Management to see what their impact was and none it seems.

I'm going to have a little compare between my EFI and @eSaF s. Maybe there is some things I can try if I compare the differences.

Hi @eSaF


So, I compared your EFI with mine and saw the differences were :

1) yours has audio enabled - (I'd had mine disabled because I have a separate soundcard.)

2) yours has newer versions of the kexts.

I timed the startups and shutdowns:
Both startup in about 40s from when the opencore timeout occurs.


The shutdown time is either :
- 25 seconds and reboot

- OR 60s and proper shutdown. 


I previously thought that your EFI was behaving differently to mine BUT I don't think so any more.

What seems to be happening using either EFI, is that:
- If I start the computer and then shutdown straight away, it closes everything down quickly (25s) but it Reboots.. and if left to reboot my wireless mouse and keyboard don't work (usb screwed)

- However, if I mount the EFI partition and then shutdown (without un-mounting it), it takes longer - about 65s but does a full shutdown.

The bios upgrade seems to have improved things a little bit - at least now, when it starts to reboot, I can press the On/Off switch to stop it rather than reaching around the back to turn the PSU off.

 

It would be nice to get it shutting down normally though - it does feel like these sorts of problems might be symptomatic of a wider issue.

Any suggestions?

You can disable this in the config.plist if you haven't already, go to UEFI/AudioSupport and where the entry is YES change it to NO.

If you're as you say using a Sound Card, go to DeviceProperties and delete this line PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x1F,0x3) if it is there, it may help with the slow boot.

 

Your reboot problem could be USB related i.e bad USB Mapping. As an experiment, disable your current USBPort.kext and try the USBInjectAll.kext and see if the behaviour is different.

 

As a last resort try this attached EFI Folder, you should get better results.

Whats 'bout your bios settings?

update your sign (go to your account settings - signature) with your hardware please.

We don't have magic ball's...

Mac version is Catalina 10.15.7 

Regarding F12/F12L BIOS - It says you can't revert it and I didn't want risk getting stuck on a bios if it broke the build for some reason.

Ok.

Now is more comprehensive.

So, you don't need at all alcid in bootargs 'couse you don't need integrated audio interfaces.

Disable it on bios.

You don't need framebuffer on device section, maybe you need headless code for use QS...but not remapped framebuffer.

ACPI AorusPro aml is not related at all with your usb config.

I've update your USB mapping and remove from config.plist your older map (I leave the kext but not loaded). I remove from your map ITE device not needed on MacOS...

 

Btw, sorry if I ask you... "they say you never come back from bios blablabla"...ok...so you update it to f12l (as ,same f12, never revert back possible) instead f12? Why? xD LoL

ps Above 4gb is not directly related to your video card (yes but...no)...it simply "authorize" your cpu to use more than 4gb for compute using (if you have)...if you have a 2gb video card, obviously is not needed but is not affect the correct daily operation...

What are your complete bios settings?

You have powermanagement set to ON on your bios setting?

You set CFG unlock on your bios menu?

You have set memory allocated in right way? ( ...is 32 and 256, remember, you use UHD630 in headless mode..)

F12L is earlier than F12 so you can revert it if necessary.

I would like to upgrade to Monterey but when I tried to upgrad from High Sierra, Big Sur and Monterey installation did not work. Once I get Catalina working, I will back up and try to install Monterey.

Right. So... make backup of your working EFI on a backup USB pendrive, backup your system with Time Machine, download Ventura, make bootable USB installer using latest EFI for boot and install it. Restore your data when prompted. 

(if i'm in you, i will make this step...)

 

BTW, if you want Monterey, simply download it from AppStore and install it... (AFTER make a Time Machine and switch EFI)

REMEMBER to create a backup usb boot drive in any case...

Hi 
I've applied these settings now. It seems to have helped. It's no longer rebooting now. When pressing shutdown, it takes about 55 seconds to fully shutdown. When it was rebooting it was only 25seconds.


How long does your machine take to shutdown? If ~55 is normal then maybe things are fine now.
 

You have some kind of BT and or WiFi card in your rig?   -> No WIFI card, but I do have a Belkin USB Bluetooth adapter.


I also tried your latest EFI but it did not show my boot drive as an option to pick

Hi @eSaF Thanks, I tried changing the usb mapping for USBInjectAll.kext. I had to change the port my belkin bluetooth adapter was in but otherwise it didn't make a difference to the shutdown.

 

It looks like the bios changed above may have sorted it. May I ask - How long does your machine take to shutdown?

I also tried your EFI but similar to @D3v1L latest EFI, This one also did not give me an option to boot my drive. (unless I'm misunderstanding something ) - see below.

No sooner as I said it was shutting down, it started rebooting again! seems a bit random - it seems to shutdown more when I use USB drive and less when I boot from hard disk.

7/8s yeah that's much faster than mine.

HSF?  It's APFS..

5 volumes in 1 drive?.. wow... btw i don't know how to solve it. Too much older OS sorry if I waste your time... I'm on 13.3.0 and all it's working like a charm... I think you really need to backup all your data, download Ventura, make a bootable USB installer (maybe whit my latest EFI), wipe all your drive and make a fresh install... but... not on a 2tb partitioned drive... Maybe on a 512gb for OS and App...and the 2tb for data, documents and, if you want, for your app cache...but not for OS 😊

Yes, I',m not quite sure why it is dist1s5, I only have 1 actual partition. I think the EFI and recovery are 2 of them, I d'ont know what the other 2 are.

I think a clean install would be a good idea but I have so many music plugins and customisations it will take 2 weeks just to reinstall everything! Eventually I will probably do that though or buy a real mac.

If I avoid putting my USB hub in the front port it seems to resolve the lagging mouse. 

When I first restart the computer it seems to take chrome a while to load pages - almost like a network issue. Also Webstorm occasionally goes all red - like a video corruption problem.


For now it seems to be working ok enough for me to use so I will continue on and the power issue is not too much of a problem.

No need to apologise, you and @eSaF have both tried to help and I am grateful for your time and effort. 

I have learnt some things from both of you so thank you.

@orbita - Hiya although it is certainly doable to have many Operating Systems on a large drive i.e as you you've done, it really can be very problematic at the best of times as well as more susceptible to cross over corruption or errors by you.

It is always advisable to have each OS on their own respective Drives when Multi-Booting, that way you can easily trouble shoot problems by simply isolating the Drives.

It would be much better to install each OS on smaller Drives and place the other files on the larger Drive for a much smoother operation of the System. You'll also find in doing it this way, the speed of the machine would be much improved.

 

I think in the end its inevitable you'll have to go that route albeit a lot of work as you've stated the amount of files you have accumulated but it will pay dividends in the end as a better running System.

I’m not sure if downgrading the BIOS has been mentioned before, but I do know that Aorus (Pro and WiFi) motherboards have a “backup BIOS” feature that allows users to revert to a previous working version of the BIOS. Or am I wrong here and this does not work either?

My Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI did indeed have a dual BIOS feature, one being a back-up that you can revert to so you're not wrong, whether this was a feature on all of their boards I don't know.

Yes, that part is omitted from OCAT which I suppose will be added in a future update to the app.

PS - I am now using OC 0.9.3 (Nightly version, so far so good).

I was unable to update to the latest macOS 13.4 because I kept getting an error while downloading the update. The error message said there was a problem preparing the update every time (was on OpenCore 0.9.1) However, after updating to OpenCore 0.9.2 and changing the UEFI > Output > InitialMode setting to Auto, I was able to successfully update to macOS 13.4. For those who are also coming this issue across. :)

Hey guys,

since updating to Ventura macOS seems to crash at shutdown. Whenever I startup the computer macOS as to recover from last crash. 

I have no crashes in daily mode, just when shutting down.

 

Maybe somebody could look into my EFI for anything suspicious?
