Free .mac-style storage

You remember back in the day when everything on the Internet was free (circa 1994-1998)? My local library offered free internet and email access through telnet – it was glorious. Ah, Web 0.9.23.6 Beta.

These days we’ve got the so-called Web 2.0 which is supposed to relive those days with tons of more free stuff, along with gradients sprinkled everywhere and HUGE buttons thrown in.

So, in my eternal quest for free stuff, I ran across this "hack" for OS X and immediately fell in love. You can now use box.net (very Web 2.0) just like you use .mac… except box.net gives you a gig of space for free and more space if you invite friends to sign up (with a link like the one I just used... although this post isn't about me getting invitations). All you have to do is sign up, set up a DAV on your Mac, give it your login name (for the secure connection) and you're ready to go. UneasySilence has some screenshots.

You can access all your files online, share them with friends, and there’s even a Windows based client for cross-OS sharing. I signed up yesterday and have been very impressed so far... and the price is certainly right. :D

Gotta love free stuff. Especially when it’s storage space!

Edit: If you're going to sign up, use one of the invitation links further down in the thread so that others (that need it) can get upgraded to 5 GB. Feel free to post your own code once signed up.

Just so you know, when you get 5 friends it says "you've signed up 5 friends - your account will be upgraded within 24 hours."

I've been very impressed with the service thus far, although B512 is right - it would be nice to be able to sync things.

They have an API - anyone want to write a plugin? :)

Edit: As far as speeds go, it's maxing out my upload at a poor 55kbps here.

I have to agree that this looks to have potential...although it does appear to have a 10MB cap on any individual file. This can be somewhat of a pain considering I do have some files that are larger than that size. Perhaps the free referal upgrade can help with that issue as well. Is it ok to stick that link in mine as well, or would it be better served in the referral forum?

Thanks

PLEASE use my Box.net referral link

5/30 UPDATE: Reached 5... THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED!!!!

It's fine here. :) I'll edit my post to point people to referral addresses later on in this thread.

Does anyone know how to use it like an iDisk?

That's what the UneasySilence link is for - it'll keep most of the iDisk functionality.

Is it your site Mashugly? I just registered and saw you as a friend. Thanks again 1 Gb is very enough for me!

Nope, I just ran across it yesterday and thought I'd pass it along!

I looked into using this while retaining .macs feature set and the answer on whether it is possible is... well... kinda.

Looks like iCal publishing will work easily but backup and iSync are either sketchy or impossible without having access to tinker with the server. For those of you wishing to tinker and brainstorm here is a starting point: http://www.tnpi.biz/computing/mac/tips/idisk/

Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm greedy so I'm listing my referral link just in case one of you does figure out how to use this with .mac's services (not that it isn't useful on it's own; thanks Mash!)

My referral link

Three to go. Thanks Corey and Geekshave!

That user managed to get iDisk to work by making .Mac point to a different IP other than idisk.mac.com. The site is in German, but if you manage to make an account, I don't think there's a file size limit. However, the server is really unreliable and doesn't allow for .Mac style syncing or anything...

One day we will get the perfect .Mac server clone. One day. *sigh*

I have been looking for a cheap alternative to .Mac, and this is great, it being free. I love that the give you at least 1 GB of storage to start.

Well, since I've been unable to justify the expense of a .Mac account this seems great. I think SpyMac has been onto this idea for awhile though. I have heard that their services have sort of been unreliable however. There's also a pretty affordable iDisk like solution that came out recently called JungleDisk, price doesn't seem too bad. I'd be up for 5GB of free storage on Box.net.

** EDIT **

Removed my invite code. Thanks for the signups. Enjoying my 5GB of free space.
