WWDC 2008

Numberzz

Today, at 10:00AM(-8:00GMT), Steve Jobs will start his keynote and unveil new products. There is not that much more time to wait. Here in San Francisco, it is very sunny, not a cloud in the sky, and about 65ºF. Even before the keynote, we know he is going to mention something about the iPhone:

Same goes for many more countries, including Taiwan and Singapore.

I will post updates here as I hear about them.

-Snow Leopard confirmed, but it's getting shown after lunch :(

-Super Monkey Ball available on AppStore for $9.99, it has 110 levels. We still haven't gotten to any new products yet.

-New App: eBay, view your auctions, bid on watched auctions, and see if you've been bid out.

wwdc-keynote_072.jpg

-Cro-Mag Rally and Enigmo: these were my two favorite games when I was younger, and they look great!

wwdc-keynote_094.jpg

wwdc-keynote_092.jpg

-Band from Moo Cow Music: it looks exactly like the app for jailbroken iPhones:

wwdc-keynote_098.jpg

-For AIM: Apple will maintain a persistent IP connection to the phone, where a 3rd party server can ping Apple's notification service to your device. It can push badges, sounds, and custom textual alerts (like how SMSs look).

-Steve sez "Isn't that fantastic? This is going to be great. In addition... we've got a few new features. The first one: contact search. Type in a few chars, instantly find who you're looking for. Second? Full iWork document support -- Pages, Numbers, and of course, Keynote. Great way to look at your iWork docs on the go. And we've completed MS Office support: Word, Excel, and now PowerPoint, too."

-If the App is less than 10MB, it can be downloaded over the cell network, otherwise it's WiFi.

-mobileme exists. "It's like Exchange for the rest of us." Change a contact? Gets pushed up to MobileMe, down to all other device. "The best part of this, it works over the air. Everything is up to date." Includes calender, mail, contacts, iDisk, photos. MobileMe replaces .Mac.

-"Today w'ere introducing the iPhone 3g." :D"Improved audio, it's really, really great... and it feels even better in your hand, if you can believe it." "Flush headphone jack." "Solid metal buttons, the same gorgeous 3.5-inch display, camera" Less expensive. :D "If we compare this to WiFi, we'll see 3G approaches WiFi speeds. We're also really proud that we're doing this with great battery life -- standby time is 300 hours." "Location services is going to be a really big deal on the iPhone -- you saw a bit of that here today, it's going to explode. We get location from celltowers, from WiFi, and now we get it from GPS." So that's A-GPS. "We can actually do tracking.""So great performance, great battery life. Now, one other thing that benefits from fast data is GPS -- we've built that into GPS." The crowd roars. "Browsing, 5-6 hours of high speed browsing. Video - 7 hours, audio - 24 hours."

-Black and white colors, 8gb for $199 and 16Gb for $299. July 11th.

End

Why are they trying to slim it down? Do I really care about 10GB or so of space? Even on a laptop cutting it by a couple gigs isn't going to make any difference. Unless it makes it boot faster or something.

If you have ever used xslimmer or similar you'd know that dumping the PPC code makes your apps execute faster......

SO slimmer is better....

oh, and btw, they sure responded to the iPhone not being affordable earlier. But what about the Macs, huh? $2400+ if I want to choose my own graphics hardware etc. Or $1700+ for a reasonable iMac. Wow... :) guess it's all iPhone these days, bah.

Coming soon: $500 Mac Book Airs.*

*20 year contract to MobileMe required.

The new Iphone 3G did arrive @ the apple stores.

Every phone needs to be registred in the shop. That means that AT&T gets all your $'s.

Home activation will not be possible. Apple says that they will need 10-12 minutes for each activation.

How they are going to do in Belgium (there Apple is not allowed to sell phone with simlock) we don't know.

Almost every single major criticism of the iPhone has been made irrelevant, great work Apple. I really want to know more about Snow Leopard though.

ehh

there's still some major faults out there, that are very easy to fix via software, and I really have no idea why they wont fix them, tether is very important for business plans

tethering

safari flash plug in

mms

stereo bluetooth headphones for ipod

video recording

Disappointed about the new iPhone. All we got was faster internet and GPS. Big deal. Faster internet is meaningless because I have Wifi everywhere, and GPS would never get used. Still no 32GB, it got thicker instead of thinner, and STILL NO MMS!!! :D More like iPhone 1.5, not 2.0. I'll keep my 1.0.

Does Snow Leopard mean the price of all older Macs are gonna plummet?

I have a G5 in the other room, poor baby. I still love my 12 inch Powerbook G4 :D

No. Snow Leopard will definitely support PowerPC processors, as shown here: http://www.macrumors.com/c.php?u=http%3A%2...mp;t=1213100103

Every application (except boot camp) is still universal, so it's pretty obvious it actually supports PPC, and I don't see why Apple would do the work and then publish just the Intel version.

I'm the opposite, I'd use the GPS and 3G. More like 3.0, not 2.0.

what the {censored} is that snow leopard?

i really don't like the name, if you read that i relate it to "leopard service pack 1", they should have chosen another name!

and why do they announce the next os if leopard is only at 10.5.3?

i don't understand that mess, not very apple i think

Yeah... I'm disappointed with all the hype about iPhone, iPod, iThis, iThat... I might buy an iPhone one day, but it's certainly not on my priority list till my old Nokia and Palm have thoroughly given up the ghost. The iPhone makes no sense to me. It should have an easily user-swappable (not just replaceable) battery... it NEEDS that, given that if you use it for more than just a call once in a while, you mightn't make it through a day and still be able to use the phone at the end of it. Forget that... I'll just keep a basic, simple phone (mostly to be reachable when out) and for the odd call here and there.

Even after having to resort to building my own, I was still hoping to finally see the elusive, mythical, mid-end Mac minitower. C'est la vie.

I guess users like me are just invisible to Apple, but I hope they can transition from a company making throw-away consumer products to a company that makes upgradeable, completely recyclable, durable hardware for a long future and software that will run on (almost) any hardware. Till then, I'm glad there are so many insanely genius hacker geeks here on the OSx86 project. :P

Should i wait and get the new iphone next month or buy an alternative one ? because my mum is on contract she has already got the current gen iphone and o2 are offering an upgrade.. so what do u think ?

AT&T is giving iPhone1 users the ability to upgrade before the end of their contract for free, I don't see why you wouldn't take advantage of that offer under O2.

So Apple can ask more money from people because Snow Leopard is a major release? It would be interesting to see how they price Snow White, I mean Leopard.

Hey all,

Im kinda new to the whole OS X scene, and this is my first WWDC that i am actively following. My question is that according to the Wikipedia page, WWDC lasts all week. If thats true then why was nothing announced today?

Well, AppleInsider reported here

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/06...werpc_macs.html

that the Preview version of Snow Leopard requires an Intel-based Mac (and did not mention about PowerPC Macs). But the source of the report seems too obscure. Anyway, who knows what is going to happen in the GM version of Snow Leopard. You are maybe right. But now, it is not looking so good for PowerPC-based Macs.

P.S. I see the point of dropping PowerPC-based Macs for Snow Leopard. This next OS is supposed to be highly optimized, secure, and robust for the next OSes to come. Although compilation technology has advanced well enough for the general purpose application, there are things to be done by architects and engineers (not compilers) for commercial OSes, which is usually platform specific. I don't think Apple will publish two versions of Snow Leopard, which means one version of the OS should handle both platforms. This leads to either a bigger size for OS X or a performance sacrifice on Intel-based Macs just for the backward compatibility (which is something that Apple was never good) of the OS to the old platform. I think it is possible for Apple to drop the old platform to make a strong standing in the OS market for the long future.

I just read this in a GPS article and they made some good points:

Apple has said it is aiming for more enterprise and business customers with the iPhone 3G, yet the agreement seems to preclude the development of any fleet management and tracking software for the iPhone. The agreement associated with the SDK, which can be downloaded from Apple's developer website by registered users, specifically states this in the section covering location-based services (LBS). "Applications may not be designed or marketed for real-time route guidance; automatic or autonomous control of vehicles, aircraft, or other mechanical devices; dispatch or fleet management; or emergency or life-saving purposes," it says.

Many technology bloggers and their readers have concluded this portion of the SDK precludes the use of third-party software for turn-by-turn voice directions and navigation, such as that provided by TomTom or Garmin. The same argument could ostensibly be made for the fleet management software.

The only reason why Apple would have this attitude is because they already have vendors under contract for these applications, so look for a much beefier GPS to come down the road :(
