Have you tried to delete the contents of Library/Caches in your user and root folder?

I installed an ATI X1600 PCI-E with 512GDDR2. I followed boris' procedures in this forum.

The card is an ATI boxed product with the same vendor and device ids as the MSI he has.

Now my system profiler indicates that QE/CI are supported. Quake3 unibin will start fullscreen but fails if I change any video options. The splash effects in dashboard work but no ppc games will start. No fullscreen 3d works. I cannot change display resolutions. The display properties are stuck on 1024x768.

What would keep me from using the other resolutions and full screen 3d?

Thanks for any advise.

Superhai i'll try that

10kelvin I had the same problem with quake, fullscreen would come up and then closes

ok Ioreg of the aus silent version,

Note, it doesn have a fan but it got a very good looking heatpipe

Thanks alot.

From what i can see from the ioreg the Asus Silence version can detect a a connect LCD display, "ATY,ConnectedFlags" = <04> and "display-type" = <"LCD"> , all other cards or at least my Asus X1600 Pro and only a tft display connected at DVI it dont detect anything (check dvi.rft), and with a normal CRT monitor it detects "ATY,ConnectedFlags" = <22> and "display-type" = <"CRT"> (check crt.rtf).

So my conclusion is that something in Asus X1600 XT Silence bios make Mac OS X detect a connected DVI display and every other cards it doesnt.

Is it possible to flash a XT with the Asus XT silence bios ? Im pretty sure u can flash a normal XT from MSI with a XT Saphire bios for example, but im not sure because of the diferent thermal management of the Silence (no fan only heatpipe) but it would problably solve the DVI problem.

I can try to post this on the ommi forums and ask him to take a look.

Any other card got sucess with DVI or just some Asus Silence version ? Maybe some strange XL or something, that make the bios swap easier.

Any sugestions to solve this problem ?

Sorry for my english.

dvi.rtf

crt.rtf

I'd be willing to give flashing my Sapphire XT with an Asus bios a shot, but the Asus bios isn't availabile on techpowerup. Any clue on where I could find one, or could someone with an Asus extract their bios using ATITools? Thanks.

Hi, I am sorry to post this but I have come to my wit's end. I have no idea where to find the x1000 kext files. I have installed 10.4.5 and they are not in my kernel extensions folder. I have tried every google search string I can think of but can't find the files. I understand that if the files are less than legal, just say so and I will leave it alone, but if anyone can point me in the right direction, I am itching to get OSX working so I can give Windows the 1 finger salute and be done with it.

Thanks in advance.

The kexts aren't provided. You edit your own. See post 2 or 14 of this thread.

If you really don't have them, something is wrong with your install. After selecting your target partition, did you select your install options prior to committing the installation?

When I browse my extensions folder, I cannot find any files similar to the list that boris has provided. I have a bunch of Radeon drivers, but none of the one's on his list.

During installation, I wipe my drive and go to the custom options but all that I have there is what looks like standard stuff, printer drivers, X11 (which I installed), and of course the additional (patch) option, which I also selected. Does the patch installer copy the files somewhere? I was using the 10.4.5 DVD, and I have no idea who patched it. Thanks very much for all of your help.

Perhaps you should do the manual upgrade to 10.4.6 which will provide the kexts to be modified. You'll need to download the 10.4.6 Combo Update from Apple and Pacifist from Charles Software. After the upgrade, then you can modify the kexts per the boris method.

eheh this post is opened for newbies :)

why don't we split it in 2 parts? like one with all the guide and changes we have found, and one for the rest?

I agree, one with an up-to-date guide/installation guide and one for general discussion and whos trying what and how close they are bla bla.

@ Munky can you send me your files? I can't find the 10.4.5 kexts.

Ok, i've summarised the method for newbies in the Genius Bar:

Also, RobNYC - i hijacked your very first post in this thread to leave a link the tutorial. Hope you dont mind! :hysterical:

Very nice. My experience says that you don't need to delete any ATI or NVidia files. And I think running the kextcache command may make problems sometimes, it is better to let the system do the kextcache which it does automagically after you have deleted the .mkext and .kextcache files and restart.

And maybe add a short note about removing the HWSensor kext. Or maybe better, editing out the gpu-sensor in the plist, to speed up the boot time. (It's only purpose is to give the system access to the temp sensor on the gpu, and it is not able to do that as I believe it is a apple-specific way of accessing it.)

Yup. I have played Call of Duty (PPC only), Halo (PPC only), Medal of Honor (PPC only) and Call of Duty 2 (Universal).

All of them except Halo played incredibly well. I was able to crank up resolution / detail in CoD2 almost as high as I can in windows. Not having to reboot to play it makes OSX my preference for CoD2, despite the marginal performance benefit of windoze.

Halo played respectably, but slowed down in firefights etc. Someone told me that it does this even running native on a powerpc, so im not sure. I guess some games are more Rosetta-friendly than others.

Put it this way - if someone could figure out how to run Half Life 2 and CounterStrike: Source under OSX, i'd delete my windows partition for good.

Yeah, I did think about marking this step as optional. But hey, if you dont need them... ;)

Again, agree with you here - thats the way I always do it, too.

Dammit I meant to do that!

That sounds interesting... care to elaborate?

Right, i'll make some edits...

ok, updated:

- made removal of geforce etc kexts optional

- added removal of AppleHWSensor.kext

- removed kextcache step

- mentioned problems with mobos supporting dual gfx card operation (xfire)

aberracus, any chance that u can post ur bios here ? To try a diff with other normal X1600 XT bios.

Just get atiflash, make a startup floppy disk (dont know if its possible under mac os) and run atiflash -s 0 silence.bin.

Sorry for asking u again this ;)

Hi there,

Thanks for the information about the upgrade patch, I will probably just install the 10.4.6 DVD as I downloaded it yesterday (well seeded!!) So I will probably just blow my crappy 40GB away and give it a try. Thanks for helping me out by the way. I really did try to find the files/info but it seems that everybody but me got the x1000 kexts.

I would also like to thank Boris for such a concise easy to follow guide.

OK guys I have a AsRock 915DualGL as well. I have been using OS X x86 since the birth. I decided to buy a MSI Radeon x1600 Pro to mess around with the Vista Beta on this machine.

My question is this:

Can I just continue to use the on board video with OS X and only use the X1600 for vista stuff?

Also

When you guys are making changes to the ATI files while using the on board video; is the x1600 not installed in the PCI Express slot?

Should the instructions read as:

Modify ATI files etc etc

Shutdown

Install X1600 pro into PCI-E slot.

Power on.

Some one should take all this information and add it to the wiki.

Thanks Guys

Not a problem ;)

GOD DAMMIT WHY WONT SLEEP WORK?!

I've installed JaS 10.4.6 - boris method just results in a light blue screen on boot, with no pointer. The machine is responding to pings. If I replace ATINDRV with the 10.4.5 version, everything works great.

I have a funny feeling its the 10.4.6 ATINDRV which is allowing Sleep, but it doesnt like my X1800XL.

Who here has working system sleep? Please let me know what versions of the kexts / frameworks etc you're running, and what hardware.
