Apple's latest update to its Leopard operating system, OS X 10.5.6, appears to be creating more problems than it's fixing on users' Macs.

A day after the software was released via Apple's download service, users flooded the company's online support forum with hundreds of complaints about the upgrade. Most centered around OS freezes and so-called "Blue Screens of Death."

"The latest version of Leopard (10.5.6) downloaded automatically via Software Update. However, when I attempted to install, the process hangs on 'configuring setup,'" wrote a user logged in under the name Davald.

"I have owned dozens of Apple computers since my first purchase in 1977, and I also have the OS X 10.5.6 update problem," reported a user named Jim Needham.

User 'Dr. Nick' said, "Have to add that my iMac is playing up. Upgraded, and can't get past the screen where you type your password, the screen goes blue, and it cycles through a slightly different shade of blue to take me to the login screen again."

Another, going by the online handle Xapplimatic, said his problems weren't limited to a single machine. "All 7 of my Macs (Intel (NSDQ: INTC) & PPC) are all hung on the installation. None of them have gotten past "configuring installation" and it's been over an hour... I'm really worried," he wrote.

Others reported that installation of the update caused problems with Bluetooth connections, the Safari Web browser, sound settings, energy-saving settings, and a host of other Mac features.

Apple on Monday cautioned users to proceed cautiously with the update. "You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you have modified the operating system through other means," Apple said in a note on its Web site.

Users could also have trouble "if you have moved applications from their default locations," Apple said. The free download for existing Leopard users was supposed to offer a wealth of performance, convenience, and security updates.

iChat users supposedly will see fixes for an issue that causes an encryption alert to appear in the chat window and for a glitch where users that set their status to "invisible" are automatically logged out of iChat.

For gamers, the update includes modifications designed to improve performance of a number of games and fix image distortions that occur with some ATI graphics cards.

Mail users should see a fix for a problem that causes messages identified as junk to remain in the inbox, while Mobile Me fans are supposed to get faster synching for contacts, calendars, and bookmark lists.

Graphics pros will get improved performance with Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE)'s C3 application suite, according to Apple. Mac OS X 10.5.6 is, among other things, also designed to improve performance and fix bugs in Apple's Time Machine archiving system, Safari Web browser, DVD Player, and TrackPad portable input system.

Apple on its Web site has published a full list of the issues that the update is designed to address.

Apple debuted OS X 10.5, or Leopard, last year. Its slick interface, along with some business-friendly security features, have helped Apple make inroads againstMicrosoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Windows in consumer and business computing markets.

lots of people who did Software-Update from Apple which then downloaded 190mb only file and updated are facing numerous problems and mainly blue-screen (as reported on apple forum itself)

People who are doing Standalone DMG file update , ~377mb file one are not having issues or no issues at all.

Thats the story. so far.

I think that's the reason for the problems. Everybody I know have updated using 377mb updates via Software Update, and they are fine. Seems that only people with small updates have problems.

Ars and TUAW is reporting the software update started installing before it was fully downloaded.

It is always a good idea to download the update pkg from Apple, instead of using software update.

In case of point system updates, I find it best to use combo updates.

I too had issues with my real Mac Pro.

I tried to install via a 377mb software update downloaded version, I tried 3 times and it just would not install.

It would prompt me to restart then it would just go to the screen where it shows nothing but the original leopard wallpaper and it would just sit there. My display went to sleep 2x before I did a hard shutdown (held power button) my display sleep timer is 15mins. After trying to install it again and again it failed each time, I downloaded the Combo Update from Apple like 680mb or so. It installed with some issues (no errors came up during install it was just issues after). The restart that followed the install did not make it to the desktop. It restarted itself in the middle of the Apple logo boot screen then everything seemed to be ok.

Curiously enough though it installed on my laptop hacintoshiba without an issue ... well i lost my ps2 keyboard and trackpad but that should be fixable.

Went from a smooth running 10.5.5 to a non-bootable 10.5.6 ;)

First boot was a bit slow, second boot seemed OK, but then third boot resulted in shutdown during grey apple logo sequence.

Disk Utility (from both a second install running 10.5.5 and from Install DVD) now tells me the file structure on the drive is damaged and it cannot fix it :(

Cannot even access contents of drive to backup data :P

(Had DSDT fixed, a Disabler installed, and latest EFI v9)

People have been complaining of iTunes stuttering their system when running 10.5.6. Load up iTunes and you'll notice a system interrupt that lasts less than a second, but occurs every 5-8 seconds. Word is this is happening on real macs too.

I don't have that issue in my hack, in my machine 10.5.6 is very smooth :)

13 Real iMacs,an G5,and an XServe updated to 10.5.6.

Also my Hacintosh updated successfully. No problems.

Only 1 iMac had a kernel error because I shut it off via power button DURING the update. = bad

The auto-installer option did not work on my MacBook. It just froze for about an hour and I had to force it off. Installing from the downloaded package worked but also took very long.

The exact same thing happened on my hack and the downloaded installer failed to reboot the system once it was finished.

I have updated two of my macs to 10.5.6 with no issues at all. Am rather impressed with how fast the sync with the "Cloud" occurs now on MobileMe. I am going to wait till the effects on the Hackintosh scene are properly determined before I update my Hackie. Cheers

I use an Apple Wireless Keyboard and a bluetooth mouse. Neither device would to connect to the USB bluetooth dongle attached to my Hackintosh after the 10.5.6 update. I had to dig through my closet to find a USB keyboard & mouse to fix things. I fixed it by replacing the IOBluetoothFamily and IOBluetoothHIDDriver kexts in the /System/Library/Extensions directory.

The kexts installed in my 10.5.6 system were version 2.1.3. I extracted older versions of the kexts from a retail 10.5.4 DVD, using Pacifist. The older kexts were version 2.1. After downgrading to older versions of the kexts, my bluetooth devices connected right away.

I have to say I also do not have this issue ...

Installed kexts are AppleDecrypt , Patched AppleHDA , eps Natit ,Disabler & SMBIOSResolver

Boot-loader is Chameleon .12 + PCEFI v9 W/ Fixed dsdt.aml Specs in Sig.

So appears that 8600GT/8800GT series cards are for sure having the stuttering issue when using itunes or quicktime. So you don't have the issue because you have an ATI card.
