Yesterday, Jon Lech Johansen (DVD Jon) reported that he successfully activated the iPhone by bypassing iTunes' subscription process, without having to sign on to a two year contract with AT&T. This allows him to use the iPhone in his homeland (Norway), one of many countries where the iPhone is currently unavailable.

Using his method, most of the phones features aren't available, however, using the iPhone as an iPod and WiFi-enabled device is fully functional. Whilst this is one step closer to a completely unlocked iPhone, it still does not have the capability to register itself with other networks (such as T-Mobile or Verizon Centennial Wireless), but where there's a will there's a way. ;)

Just a technicality:

Verizon is a CDMA network, and the iPhone is a GSM phone. It can only work on GSM networks, such as at&t, T-Mobile, Centennial Wireless, etc.

Verizon, Sprint, All-tel, and the like are all unable to use these.

Lol - ok, you got me. But seeming as I'm from the UK, I have no idea what type of networks Verizon, Sprint, etc... provide. ;)

My first reaction to the title "iPhone Hacked!" was "Took them long enough" I guess that just shows how much faith I have in this community.

Haha, people don't understand the "Magic Numbers." The phrase "Offset XXXXXX" in itself is the biggest hint you could need.

The result was a group effort, idling in a channel and reading what others say and then using that info to make a tool without showing any thanks isnt cool....

And after they ask why people under equador-line are pirates...

Sweet! I knew it was only a matter of time until somebody would figure out how to do it. Hopefully things like this will keep coming, and it'll unlock all but call-related features.

I just hope it comes to Verizon soon if I can't convince my Aunt to go to AT&T.

Some guy hacked the iPhone the lamest way possible.

I accidently figured out how to unlock an iPhone for use without charge from AT&T, but with full support of the phones features including WiFi, but no AT&T service.

Procedure:

1.) Obtain 2 iPhones

2.) Plug in iPhone #1 In iTunes select “I am a new AT&T Wireless Customer” and “Activate 2 or more phones on an individual or FamilyTalk Plan.”

3.) Follow the steps for the FamilyTalk plan and enter “Cell Number X” to port a number over from another provider (e.g. Sprint)

4.) When the you receive the “Activation Complete” e-mail, plug in iPhone #2.

5.) Select the option “I am an existing AT&T (Cingular) wireless customer” and “Replace a phone on my account with this iPhone”

6.) Fill in the information re-using “Cell Number X.” Allow the iPhone #2 to activate using this number. This number will be legit.

7.) Plug in iPhone #2, it will unlock the phone for use, but without a cell phone number assigned or account from AT&T.

all features except calling

all features

DVD Jon's method is giving you all features. What the article you mentioned describes is a program that allows you to customize your iPhone a little more than you should.

except calling

Isn't this topic about calling? I fail to imagine what use will be an iPhone locked to AT&T to anyone outside the United States. Big deal if you can customize all the processes in your iPhone if you can't make a simple call.
