efi-x.com, last updated June 9th, claims to offer the ability to install OS 10 on a non mac with the retail disc. The EFiX website states:

EFiX is the best solution for installing and using Mac OS X on your PC.

It allows its user to install Mac OS X straight from the original DVD without having to worry about patches,

replacing files and anything like that.

That means you can buy a regular PC, Mac OS X and EFiX and enjoy what the Mac users have always enjoyed:

unmodified Mac OS X on your computer, safe, easy and fast, exactly the way it should be.

The development of EFiX took a lot of time.

During the development phase, we had to deal with various problems, including sabotage.

This process also involved testing, which has been conducted for the last 6 months in production environments.

Industry leading professionals(who work for TV stations, recording studios and many others) rely on EFiX and Mac OS X running on standard PC hardware to get their tasks done.

EFiX is in the final testing phase.

All the testing has went far better than what we expected and the testers have given positive feedback.

We have planned to release it on 23rd of June, 2008. More information will be added soon.

Longtime OSx86 contributor netkas has posted EFiX in action on his blog. According to netkas, EFiX is hardware which plugs into your USB port.

As the June 23rd release approaches, many questions about EFiX remain unanswered:

-Is it an EFI emulator like PC_EFI or Chameleon?

-Is the USB device required every time you boot or just during installation?

-While this device may allow OS 10 to be installed, won't the driver situation be just like that of the OSx86 project?

-How will Apple respond to this?

-Will EFiX's EFI implementation be usable on traditional OSx86 DVDs?

Something of note is the EFiX contact page:

International dealers:

(If you can not find dealers in your region please contact us)

Germany

Россия

Украина

Taiwan R.O.C.

P.R.China

Japan

Korea

Notice here that the United States, along with many other countries are ignored. Also, netkas who has a sample of the device, stated:

they don't plan to sell it in US.

So, forget about dmcs in this case.

Thoughts?

how come that non efi video card like nvidia 8800, works with this solution, without patching?

in a real mac, a non mac geforce 8800 wouldn't work either

If they ever did manage to find their way to Canada I would maybe get one for fun but I run all that I need right now so I don't really feel the need to get one. As long as I can run XCode and the iPhone SDK I'm fine with what I have now.

80€... Hope it worth it.... Anyway what version of efi-x cost that amount? EFiX USB V1 / V2 or

EFiX USB Ultimate (USB Hub, Sound, Bluetooth)?

80 Euro ? That's the price of a good mobo, hdd or cpu. All that for what ? For a device that is not guaranteed to work with Apple's next releases ? Plus this thing is much less compatible then pc efi. At least the pc efi software solution can be modified and adapted as needed in case Apple decides to break our installs , but this device guarantees nothing. I think the only hardware needed to be broght so OSX will work better , is a brand new iMac :)

80 euros damn, that better be for the ultimate version, I thought this thing would cost at least $30 max $50

80 Euros!!

Better off spending that on increasing the performance of your Hackintosh instead.

80 euros? Well this is not exactly what I would understand as a cheap device for everyone. Since it is not know how future proof this device is - you need to know if you got 80€ for a short intermezzo. The difference why DPSC's sell so good at this price range is simply: DPSC's got a massmarket.

Anyway congrats to that hard work, looking forward to testing an EFI-X device with an ASUS MoBo...

Wow, eighty Euros is a lot more than I expected. On the other hand, they have development costs to recoup and so on. I would imagine it will come down in price, unless they get greedy in which case they won't sell as many as they otherwise would or have the sales generating sympathy of the community. For eighty euros I can do a major hardware upgrade, or put the money toward a Mac. With a minor software update Apple could innocently render this thing useless. Worth the gamble at price?

I think I'll stick with my almost completely compatible Gigabyte DS3L. If you really want 100% compatibility, get a DS3R or DS4 and you'll be set and for just about the same money as this device. I certainly won't buy it for 80 euros.

macita

Well

Again this APple software update thing? MAybe you guys dont understand that this EFI is firmware upgradeable....

The big question is what really this device will do it, better then PC efi / chameleon?

Lets some people test it then i will decide...

Anyway 80 euros are too much... i was think 30 for the low entry efi-x, considerate that if i bought those compatible mobos cpu gpu that are in the HCL i can run WITHOUT PROBLEMS A PATCHED RETAIL DVD!!!!!

titooo

macita, we understand that it's EFI firmware upgradeable, which easily could also means don't updgrade to 10.5.4 until we upgrade the firmware or you'll break your system. So easily it can be as using Kalyway: don't upgrade until we release the comboupdate...

Anyway it could be useful for those that have motherboards which audio chipsets don't work yet or don't work fully (4 example headphones volume too low or things like that).

I assume 80€ is for the Ultimate version (3 usb ports, audio card and bluetooth). I still hope the basic one is around 30 meanwhile the deluxe aroudn 50€.

The laptops version would be expensive for sure

Another things that disturb me is that they say everythign isn't ready yet cuz some idiots broke the server ot attempted to hack it or whatever. Why don't put that new on the homepage of efi-x at least? Firstly they talked about sabotage, now that. What are they trying to build nuclear weapons in a usb stick??? Is the CIA behind them? :P hahahaa
