Conroe Mac
Conroe Mac,I did in fact use the 888 install package, but it seems like a lot of people are having trouble with it. I used it mainly to have all six ports and spdif working, but alas, I do not haha. I instead installed the package again but this time just used the 3 port option since I read in the installer's thread that it was widely accepted. I'd love to have 5.1 through spdif, but since I don't have my 5.1 system with me right now... whats the point? I'll stick with the good sounding stereo until the installer gets a bit more developed for our board. A.I. Ghost, I'll be doing a full write up after I finish writing this post, and I'll post it to this thread. Fordee, Not sure how that would work out easier. Might make it more complicated and whatnot, not to mention my HD is holding 7gigs and I've only installed the 10.5.1 update and nothing else. Although, it does remind me of the good old "Deadmoo" image days of 10.4 Ahh nostalgia... I did not know that the 888 package had some issues. I am running rev. 1 so my apologies. I am glad to hear that the stereo works at least. I remember when the first stereo sound came out of my DS3. That was an exciting day for me and one of the first steps to establishing the DS3 as a hackintosh capable board. I look forward to your writeup and I'll include it in the first post of the howto. Additionally, if you think I should add a note to the ALC 888 package, let me know. fordee
I'm running a Ga-965P-ds3 rev 2.0 F10. Is there any immediate advatage to flashing F12, in terms of a hackintosh? Just checking.. I'm gonna give this another shot /w Leo. Other than the GFX card, (running a 6600), I'm runnig the same specs as PunkRockML Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68076-gigabyte-ga-965p-ds3-leopard-how-to-updated-110/page/11/#findComment-525413 Share on other sites
punkrockml13
I'm not sure about the ACL888 package. It could be working for some, might not be, I don't know. After fiddling with my system for the last day and a half without stopping to do anything else, I threw in the towel and settled with stereo 3-ports ACL888 fairly quickly. It's up to you. punkrockml13
I think this is everything for what I did yesterday. If something got left out, I'm sure I'll hear about it via not working installations. Again, my hardware is as follows: e6300 stock gigabyte p965-ds3 rev 2.0 8800gts 640mb BFG OC2E Seagate 80gb sata2 leopard installation CyberHome IDE Dvd Burner 3gb ddr2 ram Installing EFI, Vanilla Leopard, and JMicron IDE support for Gigabyte P965-DS3 This guide will provide instructions for creating a Leopard Install Dvd with Jmicron (IDE/PATA) support, how to use that Dvd to prepare a hard drive with EFI, and finally, how to “post patch” the installation with vanilla kexts, Jmicron support, Nvinject, and any other kext you might need. First off, you'll need a couple of things: Original Leopard 9a581 Dvd Image Brazilmac 9a581 Patch A working Tiger install in order to use the patch (I think I read this can be done in Linux, but I'm unfamiliar with that process) A Dvd burner and at least one recordable dvd to burn to A usb thumb drive (this may be unnecessary – see the steps below) Sata HDD to install to (might also be unnecessary – I used sata, but with the Jmicron support, IDE may be possible too. I just haven't tested it yet) And you need the following VANILLA kexts: AppleSMBIOS.kext, dsmos.kext You will also need JmicronATA.kext and Nvinject.kext, if you want Nvinject to be installed if you have an Nvidia card. These things can be found in the usual places. For the Brazilmac 9a581 patch, one might look on the Brazilmac post that is linked below. AppleSMBIOS.kext is supplied within the pc_efi_v73.zip, and dsmos.kext can be found via IRC. I think I found JmicronATA.kext on this forum somewhere. All credit for the creation of the Brazilmac and his tutorials of use go to Brazilmac. Here, I am basically re-iterating his instructions with added steps to give us more support. http://forum.osx86scene.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2008 In Tiger (or Linux, supposedly), unzip the Brazilmac patch and place the three folders and two .sh scripts on the desktop. Also place the Leopard 9a581 original image on the desktop. Open the “files” folder of the Brazilmac patch. Inside will be several files, as well as a folder titled “extensions”. This is the folder we want. Open it up. Inside you will be placing all of the additional kexts that you need for booting support on the Dvd e.g. JmicronATA.kext To edit the JmicronATA.kext to give you support for IDE, you need to right click, show package contents, open info.plist in textedit. Find the IOPCIPrimaryMatch line, and below it should be “0xsomething”. Make sure the eight numbers and letters following that 0x are “2363197b” with no quotes. I won't go into more detail, because really, if you're macosx86 capable, you can edit a kext properly. Anyways, place the edited kext into the extensions folder of the Brazilmac patch as discussed earlier. You may also want to add and other supportive kexts you may need. After you're done, open up the Brazilmac-9a581-patch.sh in textedit and replace the two instances of XXX with you're user name. Basically, make sure the two directories point towards your desktop with all of these files, patches, disk images, lights, cameras, and partying will be going on. You're ready to run the script now. It will do it's thing. Refer to Brazilmac's post for further instructions if you need them. When you're done, burn the Dvd to a disk with disk utility. You're now ready to begin the installation process. Further preparation: unzip pc_efi_v73 and copy it to your flash drive / external hard drive / whatever you're using to access the kexts from the Leopard installer terminal. You'll be using the startupfiletool, and boot1h and boot0 from the guid folder, but it's best to have everything there, so copy the whole folder. Also, make a folder called kexts, or anything you want to call it as long as you can remember the name of the volume and folder location on that volume. Place vanilla copies of AppleSMBIOS.kext, dsmos.kext, your edited JmicronATA.kext, NVinject.kext if you need it. Ok, here goes... For starters, bios settings should be as follows: Sata should be AHCI and Native, Onboard Sata should be IDE You might set Onboard to AHCI as well, but I found that my IDE Dvd drive wouldn't boot anything unless it was set to IDE Place the patched Dvd in your drive and boot from it. Make sure you hit F8 and then enter “-v” without the quotation marks. This will let you see if you have any errors. The Dvd should then proceed to boot. You should see a slew of messages about Jmicron if you're booting from an IDE drive, or you might see them no matter what. There will be things that look like errors and points of the booting process where your hard drive might go to sleep or nothing appears to be happening, e.g. stalled boot. This is not the case. Give it at least 20 minutes and you should be seeing the Leopard installer. Once you see the menu bar appear, click utilities and open up disk utility. You need to format a drive for Leopard. Pick your chosen hard drive and partition it with one partition, label it “Leopard”, no quotes, and make sure the options are set to GUID. Click apply and let it do its thing. Now click the “Leopard” in the left hand side, and then click “Info” at the top of Disk Utility. Find the disk identifier. Should be “diskXsY”, where X is the disk number and Y is the section number. It is imperative that you have the right values, or you will run into serious problems. Click the Hard Drive on the left pane of disk utility that holds the Leopard partition. Click the unmount button so that “Leopard” is no longer mounted. Close Disk Utility. Open up a Terminal under the Utilities menu. We are now going to patch the hard drive with EFI. These instructions are taken directly from i_am...me's guide to installing EFI_v7.2. In the terminal, Type in “cd /Volumes/[Your external drive label]/pc_efi_v73” with no quotes. From now on, it goes without saying to not use quotes, because we all know better. Assuming you placed the pc_efi_v73 folder in the root of your external device, you should now be able to access the files. To verify your present working directory, type “pwd”. The terminal should return “/Volumes/[external device label]/pc_efi_v73/ now, type in “./startupfiletool /dev/rdiskXsY ./boot_v7_guid_only”, replacing X and Y with your own values. It will return some lines about files in and files out. type in “dd if=./guid/boot1h of=/dev/rdiskXsY bs=512 count=1” again replacing X and Y. It will return some more lines. Finally, type in “dd if=./guid/boot0 of=/dev/diskX bs=400 count=1” notice, not a typo, there is no “r” or “sY” this time... just “diskX” It will return some more lines. You are now EFI patched and ready. The “Leopard” partition should have also remounted itself. Do not proceed with the install. You must reboot first. I recommend taking out the Dvd and allowing the computer to try to boot from the EFI hard drive. It should come up with an error on screen saying something about not being able to find “com.apple.boot.plist” or something like that. If it does, you're good to go ahead and install Leopard. Boot the Dvd with “-v” again, and allow another 20 minutes or so. Once you egt to the installer, DO NOT USE DISK UTILITY TO REFORMAT THE LEOPARD PARTITION. Choose the install destination as the Leopard partition, and customize the install by unchecking everything. The only thing that should remain is the grayed out, basic system stuff. Let the installer install. Once it finishes, reboot the computer, but dont let the hard drive boot. You must again boot from the install Dvd and enter the installer again. We need to use the terminal one last time before you start up your leopard drive. (These instructions taken from OneTrack's Perfect Install Guide) Once at the terminal, navigate to your external device and into the folder holding your kexts by typing: “cd /Volumes/[external device label]/kexts/” We are now replacing the patched, brazilmac kexts with the fresh, original kexts we need for a vanilla system. First, you MUST delete the AppleSMBIOS.kext that resides in /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/ Do this by typing into the terminal: “rm -rf /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/AppleSMBIOS.kext” Now, copy over your good kexts: “cp -R dsmos.kext /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/” “cp -R AppleSMBIOS.kext /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/” “cp -R JmicronATA.kext /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/” and if you have an Nvidia card to be used with Nvinject.kext: cp -R NVinject.kext /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/ Ok, now fix the permissions: “chown root:wheel /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/dsmos.kext” “chown root:wheel /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/AppleSMBIOS.kext” “chown root:wheel /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/JMicronATA.kext” And, again, if you need Nvinject: “chown root:wheel /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/NVinject.kext” Now set the permissions: “cd /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/” “chmod -R 755 dsmos.kext AppleSMBIOS.kext JmicronATA.kext Nvinject.kext” INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT! You must delete this kext or you will get “Package 0 did not get an HPET” error for all of eternity: “rm -rf AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext” And now, finally, you have a perfect, vanilla, Leopard installation. Simply close the terminal, take out the Dvd, and restart, booting from your installation hard drive. You should be good to go! Once you are booted up, follow Conroe Mac's instructions for getting LAN, Audio, whatever else isn't working, working! Conroe Mac
Okay, after many many hours, I still can't get the efi going. It's not AI Ghost's script either. I've done it manually and I get the same result: automatic reboot. Perhaps I should try an older bootloader or the grub method. bootloader_v5 does not work for me. All I have to do is switch back to bootloaderi386 and boot from the old kernel and things are back up and running. One thing I have noticed is that my disk number randomly switches. Sometimes my leopard partition is disk0s4 and sometimes it is disk1s4. I don't think that's the cause, but it is rather strange. I think the problem must have to do with my Darwin setup. I have two OS X installations in Darwin. At my grub menu, I select the Tiger partition in order to get Darwin going. Any ideas? macgirl
What I saw is that Darwin can only see the partitions on the disk is booting of, so installations on Different Disks can see each other. There is also a new EFI V8 with GUID and MBR support. punkrockml13
yeah, I don't mess around with Grub. I just use the main board's F12 boot selector. Way easier, and doesn't need configuring... ever I didn't know EFI v8 was out. I'll have to check that out tomorrow. Also, Conroe Mac, try just unplugging your other drives during EFI patching and see what happens. As far as the disk identifiers changing, I think that happens when disks are being unplugged/plugged, and the system readjusts in response. Not sure though. Mine never changed because I always kept the disks and their positions the same, or I checked the identifier just before patching. A.I.Ghost
punkrockml13 Nice guide. Though i thought you've done smth do DVD itself, so you don't have to reboot from the Install_DVD (takes too much time), just place it in and let the job be done (this was my main idea few posts earlier). Otherwise, isn't it easier to boot from your Tiger/Leo install (since you still need it to make patched DVD), and prepare pc_efi/replace all kexts from within? Thanx anyways, now i have a clear idea how to make it done. Also, one more thing, because of some questions about 4Gig of ram on gigabyte board (asked previously in the discussion), i did a little digging -> JMicron driver causes serious instability with more than 3GB of RAM! If you don't use it, you won't have the problem. And since you've incorporated Jmicron.kext into installation, i'd like to know will it work or not. Can you confirm it? (you'll need to get 4Gigs somwhere :-) ) Update I I just went through the brazilmac prepatch method in my LEO, after several errors it created an empty Leopatched_DVD (i know it is empty, cuz i have enabled "show system and invisible files"). Digging the 9a581-patch.sh code... cpasjuste
Hi, i want to report my history, it was not an easy task Like jp266one and A.I.Ghost, i was unable to install the bootloader in any maner, the toh leopard dvd would not install it, tried manually in a lot of ways without success. So i had to install jas 1.4.8 first (it install the bootloader) then installed toh leopard on top of it. After installing leo, i get a kernel panic as soon as i boot. I had to boot on the dvd, then apply the patchs from here. And i'm here, i'm finally writing this message from my leopard osx installation I have a 965P-DS4, with a 8800GTS graphic card, 3 sata hdd, triple boot with grub (linux, windows, osx). All is working without tweaks (except the brazilmac postpatch of course) : network card, audio, graphics, etc ... Thanks to all your reports here, next step will probably be installing the vanilla kernel. I must leave you, i have a brand new world to discover Edit : I'm now under the vanilla kernel and running osx 10.5.1 Edit2 : I'm using the yellow sata connector in AHCI mode for osx, is it the best thing to do ? I get 55 at xbench disk test, with a brand new 7200rpm seagate drive. Also i get 134 points at the opengl test with a 8800 GTS card, do i need to install additionnal driver ? Sorry if it's a little off-topic. A.I.Ghost
I managed to install Leo pre/post-patching the HDD itself. Using brazilmac postpatch (as a reference) and info from punkrockml13. (with one interesting output about shutdown) - i'll write about it later. Concern this info as a guide. My system is only a reference, so where you have different setup (like hdd or folder placement - just edit it). I'll update this post in a process of testing the method. Preparations: 1) ToH RC2 DVD 2) All necessary files are here - tested, no support for PS2 or here - not tested, PS2 should work now. Hardware info: SATA set to "native" and "AHCI", JMicron set to "AHCI" - jmicron is not necessary needed. DVD DRIVE - external multi-writer from LG disk0 (the one working system of LEO is on) - Western Digital, connected to "Orange 0" disk1 (the one, where system is going to be installed) - Western Digital, connected to "Orange 1" Step ( A ) 1) partitioning disk1 as GUID - Journaled. Two partitions -> "Vault 13" and "Vault 15" (im fanatic Fallout fan ;-) ) 2) unmount both partitions 3) here is the terminal output: mygateway:~ user$ sudo -s Password: bash-3.2# cd /Users/user/Desktop/GA965P_patch/pre_patch bash-3.2# ./startupfiletool /dev/rdisk1s2 ./boot_v8 HFS+ filesystem detected Looking for 1 words free reading 4096,4096 Marking word 415 writing back 4096,4096 allocated blocks 32 at start 13280 bash-3.2# dd if=./guid/boot1h of=/dev/rdisk1s2 bs=512 count=1 1+0 records in 1+0 records out 512 bytes transferred in 0.014005 secs (36559 bytes/sec) bash-3.2# dd if=./guid/boot0 of=/dev/disk1 bs=400 count=1 1+0 records in 1+0 records out 400 bytes transferred in 0.005557 secs (71981 bytes/sec) After that, both partitions are automatically mounted. Step ( B ) Insert ToH_DVD, reboot and install system on "Vault 13" partition. !DONT! do anything to the disk1, don't reformat, don't set it active - nothing ------> just install. Once installation is done, boot back to your actual system, to finish the process. Step ( C ) You are back in working system. 1) Open GA965P_postpatch.sh. At the beginning you will see: IFS=$'\n' # important! PATCH="/Users/user/Desktop/GA965P_patch/post_patch" # path to the patched extensions LEO="/Volumes/Vault 13" # path to Leopard installation Change "user" to your user_name and "Vault 13" so it matches partition name of your new LEO At the end of same file you will see: echo Repairing permissions... diskutil repairpermissions /Volumes/Vault\ 13/ Change "Vault\ 13" to match partition name of your new LEO // anyone know how to use parameter here? i tried "diskutil repairpermissions $LEO", but diskutil does not like it. 2) Terminal output: mygateway:~ user$ sudo -s Password: bash-3.2# /Users/user/Desktop/GA965P_patch/GA965P_postpatch.sh and let script do the job When it finishes - you are ready to boot your new efi_based Leopard. 3) So reboot to your new installation Press F8 upon boot and write: -v -f --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now the interesting thing i mentioned previously. If you continue booting this new leo in verbose mode all the time, then the shutdown will also work! I did tested it for 30 times, only once it did not shutdown properly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------Thanx Lone Wolf for this---------------------------- Instead of pushing F8 and then -v every time, just open the file "com.apple.Boot.plist" in the directory /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and add (marked red): <key>Kernel Flags</key><string>-v</string> --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Questions are welcomed. Phew... Questions & Answers q - Why efi v80, what advantage does it have, in comparison to v51 a - First of all v80 supports GUID partition table (native apple one), it also adds support for many video cards -> you wont have to use NVinject or Natit if you have for example nVidia 8800GTS/GTX or ATI HD 2600 etc. Ask netkas or others on irc what videos are supported already. q - Is GUID really necessary? a - No, it is not. q - What advantage does GUID have over MBR? a - No advantages except you can have 128 partitions on the guid part. MBR will keep 4 partitions. q - Is it necessary to create two partitions? a - No it is not, i was just testing how does it work. q - Why boot flag "-f" in the installation instructions a - I use -f boot to force_load all kexts. Helped me numerous times when i was getting errors or kernel panic. You'll need it only once - upon first boot. q - Will restart work on pc_efi? a - Solved. Now it should work. q - I have PS2 Mouse/Keyboard, will it work? a - It should. Feedback is highly appreciated. q - What about dualbooting, either GUID or MBR? a - Conroe Mac is doing some digging in that area, stay tuned q - Is it still necessary to install vanilla after doing this installation? a - Basically it is not. You still can use .ToH kernel, but the main idea of this installation is to get your pc_efi with vanilla kernel working. Also, with .ToH kernel you wont be able to update your system to 10.5.1 - you will break it. q - Can i update via software update? a - In case you have vanilla kernel (which is installed in this guide) you can. There is a slightly small chance, that it will break your installation, but so far - no one reported the issue. q - I used to work on pc_efi51. Geekbench was detecting me as Macintosh. After upgrading to v80 it detects me as Hackintosh again. What's wrong? a - Nothing. Geekbench was given a new detection algorithm, so now it detects hack even if you use pc_efi. cpasjuste
A.I.Ghost, why are you creating two partitions, is it really necessary ? Conroe Mac
Alright, I'm trying one more thing. I am ready to wipe my leopard partition and forget it exists. Leopard hasn't really impressed me, but I enjoy the challenge more than the OS. I am thinking of downgrading Leopard and Vista because neither one seems that great. Perhaps I'll get back in when someone makes a writeup to put guid/mbr on one disk. Vanilla kernel isn't worth the time I've put into it. Conroe Mac
AI Ghost: I noticed that you are using the -f boot flag. Why is that? Also, do you have any input on dualbooting guid/mbr? A.I.Ghost
I use -f boot to force_load all kexts. Helped me numerous times when i was getting errors or kernel panic. You'll need it only once - upon first boot. Never tried dualbooting - i don't like several systems on one HDD. Always used mobo's boot menu to choose proper HDD to svitch_boot between Tiger and Kubuntu. Also, as far as i know boot0 and boot1h (i used to setup GUID) are not capable of hybrid booting, regardless v80 is. So if you want several OS', then you'll have to use install LEO on MBR with v80. Conroe Mac
Alright, so I'm up and running in guid with v8 and vanilla kernel, but now I need to get the dual boot going. I referred to AI Ghost's guide except I did all the legwork in the ToH DVD terminal... I will see if I can get some more OSes up and running. punkrockml13
A.I. Ghost, In response to your post a few posts back, yes, it would definitely be easier to patch efi through the tiger install. I didn't even think about that, since I dont actually have a tiger install on my hackintosh. I have a macbook (which i used to patch the dvd image), making my osx86 tasks a lot easier, so it didn't even occur to me that you could save the 20 minute boot two times over lol. Glad to hear things are chugging along though. Conroe Mac
For the diskutil repairPermissions, I believe you need a final slash after the $Leo like diskutil repairPermissions $Leo/ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68076-gigabyte-ga-965p-ds3-leopard-how-to-updated-110/page/11/#findComment-526833 Share on other sites
A.I.Ghost
For the diskutil repairPermissions, I believe you need a final slash after the $Leo likediskutil repairPermissions $Leo/ Hmm, with partitions with single name it works Tell me whats wrong then: mygateway:~ user$ sudo -s Password: bash-3.2# TE=/Volumes/Vault\ 13/ bash-3.2# echo $TE /Volumes/Vault 13/ bash-3.2# diskutil repairpermissions $TE Disk Utility Tool Usage: diskutil verifyPermissions [-plist] MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode diskutil repairPermissions [-plist] MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode Verify or repair the permissions of a Mac OS X boot volume. Ai.Ghost, could you write a quick howto fix the reboot bug (not working at all here) ?
