I had he issue with having to reset the audio before I installed FakeSMC 2.5. I did my original install with Stella's installer as posted on the Lifehacker - Snow Leopard No Hacking Required page.

I would think it must be an issue with the audio driver. If I fix that and figure out why I can only boot my Windows 7 partition (not Boot Camp, not on the same disk) in VMWare only when the Boot Camp VM is first created I will be one happy camper!

It is not as likely, but I had a similar problem with the screensaver on install.

No matter how I set it, it still came on at the default time interval.

I tried extending the time, disabling it, etc to no avail.

I googled around a bit and found someone mentioning the panel being buggy and

to try deleting a certain plist file. It worked like a charm.

Hit up the google machine and see if someone else has had that problem.

It sounds like the system doesn't want to make/honor the setting file.

( Need I say,.. backup. backup. backup first? =-D )

Try re-installing the V3 installer, if that does not work then we might need an updated audio driver as this might become a problem for many more. Funny enough, I have never had an audio problem but I also did everything off of a clean install and using the V3 installer from the get go. Maybe its something with that? Also, I am curious... Why are you trying to use Boot Camp? Yes it will partition your drive, but we are using for the most part a PC first, that is modified. If you can, just use a secondary hard drive to install Windows on. The thing to keep in mind is that when doing this, unplug your mac install drive, and install windows to the drive you want. Then plug in your Mac HD, set BIOS to boot from the MAc HD, and our wonderful chameleon bootloader will let you pick the drive.

Well when we first boot this install you have to select your audio output device.

That's why I'm saying that it is likely the system being buggy with updating the plist.

Also, Boot Camp doesn't work on this install. It throws an error for me every time. Always has.

Boot Camp talks to the mobo FW and does checks to authorize running.

There are tons of complaints on the net with MacBooks that can't run BC as they updated

their firmware before some patch BC wants was installed; Those people are not able to use Boot Camp.

Of course, we don't have the FW it's looking for.

On the flip side of that, if someone figured it out,... pass on the info!

(ps, He notes it's not BC, but that VMWare will not boot it unless he creates a BC VM)

I didn't install boot camp through the menu (I also have a real Mac), but VMWare Fusion 3 off the home menu has a selection for Boot Camp Partition. When I select it, it finds my Windows7 drive then prepares it, and boots it up right through OSX. However, once I reboot OSX it stops working, until I star the procedure over.

I just wanted to use it as sometimes I just need something in Windows. Its certainly not a deal breaker. I can always boot into Windows7 with the F12 boot menu key in the Bios.

I'm going to look into the V3 and the plist.

What I do to see my Win 7 pc's is to connect to server (command K) and type in smb://computer name and then connect as guest and then all the shared folders come up.

I figured out that I have to be in Finder to do the Windows-k to have the pop-up box. Now I can connect to all the other NTFS network shares.

Thanks.

Check to see if your Windows partition is coming up with the same path after each boot (like /dev/disk1s2, etc.). If not, VMWare will prepare the partition each time it tries to boot it.

Check in:

~/Library/Application Support/VMWare Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp

for the Boot Camp partition config files. You'll see directories which map to the path(s) and that will confirm it's moving around.

IMHO, VMWare Fusion 2.0.6 is a bit better at handling "Boot Camp partitions" on our hacks.

I thought the same, our setup, not a big deal just thought it was something to point out for everyone.

So I tried it when I got home, and yeah, that is not supposed to happen. Seeing it first hand made me realize its a graphics driver problem, and could explain why people have had the same problem with HDMI. I think it needs an update to fix this, as when you look at the blue screen, the cursor follows but its not the right color if you can see from what happened. Hopefully a newer version of the bootloader will fix this.

My bad for not reading that right, kind of tired when I wrote that reply. I have messed with Fusion and its ok, I actually just installed Parallels 5 and find it a great improvement. Decided to try screwing around with Win 7 and its working quite well. When it comes to Fusion trying to read Boot Camp, I would not screw around with Boot Camp at all, regardless of the program, since our systems do not support it. If you want to keep using Fusion, just have it setup a disk image to read from instead of trying to use Boot Camp. Or try parallels 5 if you like, I think its much better than previous builds.

Why do you need to press F12?

The Chameleon bootloader will do it easier.

When you see the grey screen Showing your hack drive and the backwards progress

bar hit Esc. It will show you all bootable partitions and you should be able to select the Win7

drive.

This is a favor to anyone that has had to scroll through 45 pages to find the damn V3 installer!

I am starting to wonder if this is a glitch relative to the chips being used, and possible revision of those chips. Try installing the V3 installer once more and see what happens.

I installed iStat Menus and the CPU Temperatures are being read as 47-52 degrees C. While this is higher than I used to get under Leopard it is certainly closer to reality than Temperature Monitor.

How could 1 program get 'correct' values and another program completely miss the mark? Aren't the 2 programs reading the same values from the same source? Obviously not...but why/how?

It is actually dependent on the FakeSMC that we are using otherwise we would get all of the temp diodes that iStat can read. Its translating for what a real mac would do including temp diodes, and of course changes had to be made for getting SL to run properly, hence the changes and possible mis-reads from 10.5 - 10.6. The funny thing is there are actually 2 problems. This translation might not always be accurate, as we are seeing with FakeSMC v2.5, but also with iStat as well now. I have been reading a few things on some of my daily mac sites, and the publisher of iStat will be issuing an update, as there is a recent problems with real world macs and the correct temps being read. Could it be one or the other? or possibly both? we will have to see what the updates yield. And I also get around 40 or so C, as I am using an LCS system.

I assumed that when my chip read 12,340 C that the Hadron Collider had created 2 black holes inside my CPU. I still waiting to be sucked in and hoping to be spat out of a worm hole on the other side of the universe. :) Of course running this Hacintosh it may have already happened :)

Here's to hoping the bridge has a Heisenberg compensator. :-D

Ahh ok, thanks for checking it out, maybe we will get a v4 installer or a update kext :P

I'm just a beginner, but I think that this is your missing link.

Yes, that did the trick.

Now, my biggest issue is that I can get my mouse to work. I have a 5 button kensington ci20. Only 2 button functions register, and when I download and install their Mouseworks application all it says is "driver not found" Then the system gives me a popup error saying a kext file cant be used. On my powerbook it works great, and I love having different functions to each extra button.

Any ideas on how I can fix this? Is there a patch somewhere? Google could not help me. :)

I also have a logitech G110 keyboard that I cant get the software to recognize that its plugged in. None of logitechs software seems to be able to tell its plugged in. This means I cant map out any custom keys or anything

Other than those 2 issues, the rest of the machine works great, temp hasn't exceeded 65C, and no kernel panics.

Thanks again,

Sorry to say it, but it's because Logitech sucks. (For the Mac)

I've had several multi-button mice that Logitech's software failed for, even though it *claims* it's supported.

I always used Steer Mouse and it is the single most favorite utility program I used for Mac.

It lets you map like crazy and isn't attached to a specific mouse brand.

I can't help on the keyboard end though.

Nope, Chameleon won't boot it. Its missing something. I havent found anyone who gave any kind of step by step and I don't want to screw anything up.

Awesomeness! I'm on my powerbook now, but when I get home I'll have to try it out. Thanks for the link!

So if Logitech really is a POS for macs, any suggestions on what keyboard to get? I'd love to get one with a few extra buttons that can be mapped. Both for storing canned responses to email, game macros, and quick finder actions. The logitech was supposed to have 36 (3x12) buttons that could be mapped, and a few extras like iTunes controls. But if it doesnt work, and a 3rd party utility like the mouse one you linked doesnt exist, then I'll have to get another one.

Lastly, ages ago on TechTV's Screensavers, I remember they were showing off this neat bit of software that you could run on two macs, or mac/pc mix. When networked it pretty much allowed you to drag items from one desktop to another, and move the mouse "off screen" from one mac to another. Also allowed one to cut/paste between machines. Anyone have any clue what I'm talking about, or if something similar exists these days?

I got the Logitech diNovo Wireless (RF) keyboard. I really like it. It has also gotten great reviews overall. Logitech also updated the SW to b 64bit SL compatible.

New GPU FINALLY installed, a fresh installation of OSX & V3 Installer went without a hitch (Also updated to 10.6.2). Just need to check and tweak things now.

Massive thanks to Stell (Of course!) and SBMac for the continued support in here (Might need you at the weekend!!!).

First Glitch: Sleep goes to sleep ok but upon waking I get no display on my primary monitor and a blue screen on the secondary one. If I press a key in this state that OSX doesn't like I can hear the Funk sound so I sort of know it has restarted but not correctly initialised the display? I should also mention I guess that sleep did work ok with the old 7600GS Graphics Card!

As far as Stella has noted, to get the build working the way this guide outlines you have to use

that specific card. (The 9800 GTX+)

After all, we are talking about a custom setup OS X vanilla install.

You will likely have to edit the DSDT, or add a kext to get other cards to work.

All cards are also not created equally, nor are they all OS X SL compliant.

That's why there's a wiki where people have outlined what functions with the cards they tried.

If you followed this build exactly, want the build to function as stated, and want to know that

updates will be analyzed and the results passed to you FOLLOW THE BUILD. ;-)

i have been researching this thread to see if there are any other video cards compatible for this build. is this comment true or is there any other video cards that will work with this build without changing anything. im trying to save some money and was thinking of getting a 9400gt or 9500gt ( i dont game at all)

The installer says that it works for double dvi NVIDIA cards. I tend to go for the fanless cards because the video card is often the loudest component.

I am so happy to have back and forward buttons working on my Micoroinv mouse. :( Thank you very much.
