I'm wandering if i should have got the Q9550S 2.83 which runs 65W instead of the Q9650 3.0GHz @ 95W (hotter) ?

The temp is actually a misread within OS X.

So if my mac reads 46C, is it actually lower than that ?

That's about right for the temp, and you could go with either chip. I like the Q9650, and that is what I have, it runs great and not necessarily hotter, even though its a higher wattage. I say its best to go with the chip and speed that you want, simply because you could overclock the lesser speed, however, in the overclock process you could damage the chip, shorten its life, and even possibly use a higher wattage. If that makes sense...

I have a Q9550 clocked to a nice stable 3.4 GHz. It idles at around 35 to 40 on the 4 cores using Core Temp in Win7 and heats up to a max of 60C when running WPrime 1064M. According to CPUID, the UD3P bios has the Q9550 throttled down to a multiplier of 6 for a core speed of 2400 MHz when it is not running any cpu intensive programs. When you run the WPrime 2.0 benchmark software it jumps up to 8.5 X 400 = 3.4 GHz. This is because the CPU EIST function is switched on in the BIOS as per the Lifehackers instructions. It is logical to assume that the cpu is throttled down to save energy when running Snow Leopard. However, I can't tell for sure because the MAC CPUID program that I have running on my Hackintosh only tells me that I have a 2.83 GHz running at 3.4 GHz. It doesn't give a real time speed like Windows CPUID.

Thanks SBMac, I'm just a little paranoid. What's too hot or what temp range should it be under?

Normal operation depending on the chip can really vary, I would want to say anywhere between 30 C to 60C, In winblows 7 my system under load tells me its at 48C but that is because I am using a Liquid Cooling solution for the chip. As long as you have a good cooler, and the thermal paste is right, load up your BIOS, go to the section where you can see the temps (can't think of it off the top of my head). And just let it run for 20 minutes or so to see what the average temp is at idle or when doing basic things on the computer. That will let you know the correct temp at idle to a point.

Ok, my monitor is 1920x1080. For some reason my boot resolution is MUCH lower no matter what i modify. It's really ugly =/ I think it might be because when I did my first hackintosh install I was using a 1680x1050 monitor. How do I fix this? Do I have to hardreset my motherboard info?

Hello all,

I have the exact build except for the memory (corsair xms 1066 x 8gb) and video ( gtx 260). the machine boots into snow leopard fine. I used Stell's v3 installer with no problems. I have not updated to 10.6.2 yet.

The trendnet pci ethernet won't work and even if i enable both onboard lan's in the bios, neither work. I have tried the pci card in both of the pci slots with no luck. the "connection wizard" or whatever doesn't recognize the ethernet even though there is a green light on the pci card.

any thoughts?

thanks in advance.

I said I was going to format last month but finally got around to it just now. My onboard ethernet didn't work either but installing this fixed it:

Use the auto-installer.

You would need to change the resolution of the theme itself, if you check out the chameleon bootloader forums, there is an area that tells how to do this with a free app and that should change the resolution for you. I might also recommend a re-install of the V3 installer just to be sure the bootloader is working correctly for the auto detection. Remember to delete the extras folder before re-installing.

Hello all-

So I followed the lifehacker installation for snowleopard and everything works wonderfully. I even did the 10.6.2 update and still no issues, except....

My onboard Lan and my onboard Firewire do not work.

Now I read through a lot of the posts and skimmed the rest because its so long.

I would appreciate some help getting these items working.

I noticed that typically the on board network does not work, however it did work with the buildahackintosh.com install guide which is not snowleopard.

I like the lifehacker much better than the buildahackintosh.com setup so I want to stick with this.

Any help would be appreciated even if its a link. I probably missed it when I was skimming.

Thanks so much.

HI i have successfully installed this in my system. The thing is, it boots 64bit by default. Is there a way to boot this thing into 32bit? Thanks.

Post 803 and 821 on page 41 and 42 of this forum mentions from SBMac how you can modify the boot up script. I completed this yesterday, 12/12 to run 32-bit.

post 821 from SBMac

"When you see the Hard Drive image come up, you can hit any key on the keyboard to stop the bootloader. Then use the Down Arrow key on your keyboard to see the other options come up. From there choose Verbose to get the text input and you can put in "-x32" (without quotes) to boot your system in 32 Bit mode. As for the other option of adding in i386 to the plist, there is another way of doing it to add in the 32 bit string, I will see if I can find it for you to try."

I had issues when I manually edited my boot.plist with the i386 setting. I had to reinstall snow leopard.

Also note that many apps that are 32-bit based do load when you are running in 64-bit mode.

If you load Activity Monitor it will show the applications running.

Under the "Kind" column it shows the process type that is running, for me firefox and itunes are running in 32 bit. I did not have to run in 32-bit mode to load the applications.

So I'm finally getting around to ordering that wifi card. I know there's been some discussion over the OWC/NewerTechnology Ralink-based N cards, but they're much inferior to the dell card I'm getting (but they are $25 cheaper!). Ralink cards use their own drivers, whereas this Dell card is based on a mini-PCIe broadcom card. By googling it (and it's part numbers), I've been able to find out that Dell and Apple use the same OEM to make their WiFi cards. Dell then throws their card into an adapter and sells it for $25 less than apple does for the built in card.

Now that I've said that, I've noticed a problem with my Hackintosh. Every so often (haven't timed, but it's relatively frequent) while playing Flash my screens will both blink white for a fraction of a second (one frame) and then the computer will freeze. The mouse is still mobile but all sound playback and hard drive read/writes stop. The only cure is a hard reboot. Any ideas? It's not the worst problem in the world, but I'd like to fix it soon. Thanks

I have gotten the flash drive prepped and when I tried to install I can boot into the flash drive. However, after the progress indicator flashed for a minute or so it tells me to power down and restart.

I can't get beyond that ;)

Thanks in advance for any help.

jamis2001, did you remember to change the BIOS settings?

You would need to change the resolution of the theme itself, if you check out the chameleon bootloader forums, there is an area that tells how to do this with a free app and that should change the resolution for you. I'm not sure if it's that. I've modified the resolution in all the plist files. I also installed a native 1920x1080 theme. Even the Gigabyte logo on startup is stretched so I think it might have to do with something on the motherboard rather than OSX.

When I check "Video Info" 1920x1080 isn't on there. Is that the problem? Does anyone else use a 1920x1080 monitor with their UD3P? Oddly enough 1680x1050 isn't on here either....

check my post a few posts above you. i have a link there.
I did. But I am using the E7200 CPU instead of the Q9650. I am also using an ATI card... but I figure I would be able to install SL and then make changes later :)

In order to help we need you to get real specific. This is more akin to science than voodoo.

- What parts did you use? (You obviously didn't follow the build and it might come into play)

- What installation method are you using?

- Exactly what has happened up until it reboots on you? Have you seen any messages?

Get the picture? Help us and we can help you. ;-)

Thank firestorm. Unfortunately, it didnt work so Im still trying to figure it out.

I did notice that my ethernet option under network does not say built in ethernet.

As of now the computer is still set up just like the lifehacker computer with the 10.6.2 upgrade as well as the weaksauce/bonjour tweak. With still no lan or ethernet.

So does anyone have any other tips or tricks? I know i could just go with a network card, but I would like to extinguish my options not to mention I want my firewire to work.

Thanks, Merry Christmas.

Hm, I can't seem to use:

<key>Default Partition</key>

<string>hd(x,y)</string>

to change my default boot drive (want it to be Windows) anymore. Anyone know what's wrong? What version of Chameleon does stella's V3 installer use?

Edit: nvm I'm a moron. I put in the wrong numbers 3 times because I kept clicking the wrong disc to find the disk/partition number xD Works fine now

Thanks in advance for the help.

I am using the following:

-EP45-UD3P v1.6

-E7200 Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz

-OCZ Reaper HPC 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 memory

-Samsung SATA DVD Burner

-WD Raptor SATA HD 36 GB

-Sapphire Radeon 4850 x 2 in Crossfired configuration

-Trendnet TEC-PCITXR NIC installed in the lower PCI slot.

I tried to follow the BIOS settings as close as possible, the CPU speed is different than the Q9650. The voltage values are the same besides the Vcore voltage.

The following entries are different because of the memory I assume:

CAS Latency = 6

tRCD = 6

tRP = 6

tRAS = 18

I am assuming the culprit is the video card, I was hoping to get the OS installed and then figure how to get the ATI card to work given I have read in this forum that some manage to get the 4850 to work. I think the card in the second PCIe slot might be causing problem so I will try to unplug next.

As for the install so far, the USB flash drive boot up fine, the screen asking for the start up options shows up and then went into progress screen. I never got the language option dialog, instead, I get the message in various languages asking me to power down and restart.

Update: I tried one card in the PCIex16 slot - the install still ask me to shutdown. Maybe I need to borrow a nVidia card from someone to get the OS installed the figure out how to get the 4850 to work.

I think it's your ATI card as well =/ Total longshot, but, try downloading this, extracting it, taking the "boot" file and replacing the "boot" file in stella's installer with it.

Anyway, I have a problem too. Has anyone successfully been able to dual boot Windows 7 off a different drive? How did you fix its issues with AHCI? If I put it on AHCI, Windows 7 won't load. If I put it on IDE, OSX won't load :D

You say Windows 7 won't load? Do you mean it won't install, or do you mean you

installed but now it won't load?

This is technically OT, as it is a general OSx86 dual-boot question, but be very specific

and we'll see if we can get it taken care of without taking up too much space.

Remember, in troubleshooting specificity is king. ;-)

Yeah, I seem to have fixed it... I unplugged the OSX drive as usual, installed Windows 7 with BIOS set to IDE. Then after installing, I editted the registry as per a guide I found using Google, then while shutting down to restart I quickly plugged in the OSX drive as well, went into Windows, drivers automatically installed, and it was fine.

The time before that the OSX drive wasn't plugged in. That was the only difference. Who knows...

Got a perfect 7 + OSX 10.6.2 going on now (as far as I can see anyway). Only issue is my resolution at boot before enterting either OS which is butt fugly :) At least it's nice once you get in there.

AkronElliott:

Thanks for the 32bit reply. Is it possible to also fix the apple boot resolution (the white screen with apple logo and spinning circle) to 2560x1600? If yes, where can i add the fix to this? Thanks.

The previous page 43 post# 858 - SBMac explains how to change the resolution in the theme.

SBMac has a link and short description. The link will take you to the developer site for the boot loader.

You may want to check the response to the post to see if the individual requesting this has it working.

I have not changed my resolution, so I can not say from experience when, or where, or what works.
