If anyone needs help, please feel free to ask, and I will help the best that I can, as well as I am sure, many others that have supported to this thread.

SBMac, I am trying to get my 10.6.1 build to recognize the temperatures of the cores. I have a UD3P, 9800GTX+, 8 gigs of ram (OCZ 800mhz DDR2). Everything else seems to be working, but I cannot get Temperature Monitor to pick up my cpu temperatures. I can read the SMART from my 2 internal 1 TB hard drives. I installed v2 of Stella...I really don't have a need to go to 10.6.3 (but am willing if you think this will fix my problem). From reading the thread (all 37 pages), it would seem that everyone else seems to be able to pick-up the cpu temps. I've done a reset of the Temperature Monitor program...even downloaded a new copy and nothing...only the 2 hard drive temps.

Notably, when I was running 10.5.x, Temperature Monitor would pick-up my cpu temps.

I can't figure out what went wrong in the install that I dont have this. What do you think? Do you think it has to do with the fakeSMC that was bantered around?

Thanks.

32-bit will not limit how much memory you can see. I was running in 32 bit mode at first and could use my 8 gigs no problem.

A 32-bit APP, cannot use more than 4 gigs I think, but that was not your question. The overall system will be fine in 32-bit mode.

Thanks for the info, ill try forcing 32bit, i have just tried the bonjour trick, and its made my network worse, and for whatever reason 'sudo ifconfig en0 -promisc' gives me an error and i cannot turn it off, there was 1 reboot where it saw the macs on the network for what they were, (imac, macbook pro etc) but wouldnt connect. whatever its done cant seem to be undone.

im going to try forcing 32bit and load the realtek1000 drivers, apparently there is a "RTGMac_v2.0.3.zip" updated driver that without modding supports bonjour but all 3 realtek mirror FTP sites give me a permission denied error...

someone up there doesnt want me working on a hackintosh.. its got to be it, for a system (bar the GFX card) with so many auto magical installers to have so many problems..

might just forget SL and go back to iAtkos 7, everything except the sound worked, but i got around that myself :)

I would be willing to be it is something with FakeSMC, have you tried to re-install the v2 aka halloween installer? (be sure to delete the extras folder before re-installing) Otherwise I would recommend the update to 10.6.2 just for updates, and security changes within the OS, but before you do that, be sure to use the V3 installer so you do not brick your system.

...

This could be a few things, possibly bad contact between the GPU cooler and the heatsink, possibly bad GPU BIOS, check for an update on the manufacturers site, or possibly just a bad card. Have you had the card overclocked?

...

Thanks for the reply. I checked what I could of your suggestions. I emailed EVGA customer support - I'll call if an email doesn't get me anywhere.

Just to verify -- no one else with this build using the EVGA 9800GTX+ has a constant, high fan speed right? Everyone's varies with the load?

Sorry I cannot be of more help, but basically the Fan speed should vary with load. Also, I just noticed that in your signature you mention that your quad core is at 2.67 and not 2.83, go into your BIOS and look up the multiplier rate under the CPU options, forgive me I do not recall where its at right now, and if its at 8, change it to 9. This happened to me when I put the chip in, as my multiplier should have been at 9 but it was at 8, thus slowing my CPU.

I mentioned this around page 20 of this thread -- the only options available for me to change are 6x, 7x, and 8x. No 9x multiplier. Obviously, it's a waste, but I haven't gotten around to investigating the cause. I don't think that I've tried it since using the v.3 installer, but that shouldn't have anything to do with the BIOS, right? (Pardon my newbness.) I'll try to change it now.

<edit> I still couldn't change the multiplier to 9x, but I changed it to 8.5, which gave me 2.83. Thanks for prodding me to try it again. In the past few weeks, I've changed other BIOS settings. Maybe I'll go through the lifehacker screens again to compare.

I have a Q9500 on an old Asus P5B deluxe running at a multiplier of 8.5 times a bus speed of 400 for a core speed of 3.4 GHz. RAM is at 400 mHz so the FSB: DRAM is 1:1.

I just received another Q9550 chip and 2 sticks of 8500 G. Skill today that I'm going to install in my UD3P Hack this weekend which I hope to clock just like the Asus board.

Hopefully, I'll be able to post the settings in a couple of days.

Well I feel like a jacka$$, I totally forgot about that setting on some CPU's, some will let you do the .5 increments. Thanks for reminding me... :(

Definitely let us know your settings, I have been wanting to tweak with the BIOS, but trying not to brick my board, lol...

Ok, so I am a little lost here. I have an exact copy of the Lifehacker parts list (minus case + ram).

I followed every step in said guide, and every time it hangs here: verifying DMI pool data

The one question I have seen no answer to yet is this:

What kind of mac/os do you need to use to create the flash drive installer?

I am using a G4 powerbook running 10.4.11. Is this whats screwing me over? Do I need to use a newer intel mac to create the flash drive?

If thats the case, do I need to use it to both create the image and then restore it? Or can I do that on my G4, then use my neighbors intel iMac to install Stellas v3 software pack. (copying back and forth takes a while, dont want to tie up his machine that long)

I'm confident I can get this working and running properly. Its just after 12+ hours trying to figure this out I'm at a loss as to why it's not booting off the flash drive.

Thanks for the help!

Reporting in success for me...

Everything the same as the Lifehacker build but:

1) Optiarc DVD burner, and a second CDR/DVD combo drive.

2) Western Digital Black HD and added my other Seagate Barracudas into the fray.

3) 4GB of memory, used Crucial Ballistics.

I only have had a few problems, two of which I fixed from the posts. Had the network card in the wrong slot and it wasn't picking it up. Moved it and viola, working. Also the temperature sensors were not working so I switched to FakeSMC v2.5.

The last one is minor, but maybe someone knows a solution Every time I reboot my sounds resets to default output of headphones on Sound Effects and Output tab. I need to switch bother to line out at every restart. Anyone have this problem or a solution?

Ok. I'm getting closer to reality. Instead of no reading, now I'm at around 13,800 degrees celcius. Since I and my house is not melting into slag, I'll presume that the sensor is wrong...but at least I can see all 4 cores now!

How do I get the temperatures to read correctly? :(

Thanks, SBMac.

EDIT: I upgraded to V3 without a hitch---Thanks, Stella! I upgraded to 10.6.2 no problems so far...

The problem is using 10.4, you can use a PPC based mac but it has to be 10.5. The reason being Disk Utility had major under the hood improvements to how it images drives. Do this and you should be doing a bit better. I also had the weird hangs at starup at Verifying DMI pool. What you will want to do that I eventually had to do, is reset your BIOS. Make sure all of your hardware is installed the way you want it, then follow the lifehacker guide. You can use the V3 installer from the get go, so do not worry about that and updating it from v1 to v2 then v3. From there you should be good...

From what I keep seeing on a few sites, FakeSMC 2.5 is having some mixed results, mostly positive but in your situation this could be it. I would do this, boot from your Flash drive to run the installer, then delete the Extras folder off your primary HD. Then run the V3 installer once more, and see if that fixes your problem.

I am starting to wonder if this is a glitch relative to the chips being used, and possible revision of those chips. Try installing the V3 installer once more and see what happens.

I saw this thread in another OSx86 Forum

http://aquamac.proboards.com/index.cgi?boa...=569&page=1

Can I do this to allow my hackintosh to use both video cards?

This is definitely a good fine, however its from January of '08. Let me do some searching and see what I can find that is more recent and might work for us.

Thanks.. the last thread update was today so the community has been following it closely.

I would consider doing a search on this thread. It was only last week maybe,

but still long enough to get buried by other posts...

Someone posted in here that they altered this install and added a 2nd card.

Maybe a PM to that user will get things going for you. ;-)

Overclocking the 2.83 Ghz 9550 to 3.4 is straightforward. I tested the the system in Win 7 using Coretemp, WPrime and CPUID to see if the temperatures were good using an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 on the CPU.

(Random) Quick question:

Trying to watch a movie on BOTH my dual monitors, can it be done?

A friend suggested setting my displays to mirror mode, but when I do so one of the monitors switches to a blue screen and the other my desktop. <-- Is this supposed to happen? Issue with hackintosh?

Am I doing this right? Or is it not possible?

BTW: So far my computer has been running flawless! Thanks everyone for the support!

This could be a few things, first which graphics card are you using? what software are you trying to watch the movie through? Is it a DVD or one of the various vid file formats available?

I'm using the LH guides GFX card - the 9800 GTX

I tried using VLC and Quicktime so far. (EDIT I've also used Itune's visualization mode too full screen of course)

Is the blue screen normal in mirror mode?

I know your using a different video card, do you have this 'blue screen' problem?

Considering what we are doing with the Hack-Intosh its very possible that the programs don't want to display on both. Are you setting mirrored display in the display control panel? If you are then it should be ok, technically, but if you are doing it within VLC, it could be a software glitch. Just curious, why on both panels?

Yea, I'm using the settings in System Preferences>Display>mirror mode

Ha, yea I ussually just watch movies on one panel, but a friend of mine brought it up to me (also using LH's hackintosh system). Not a big deal since my machine is running flawless, just wanted to utilize both panels for movies.

I wonder if its a problem with the mirrored mode, and our setups, seeing as we have an interesting way of loading the graphics driver through the bootloader. I will try this when I get home and see if I can reproduce it. I will let you know what I find.

I thought the same, our setup, not a big deal just thought it was something to point out for everyone.

I had he issue with having to reset the audio before I installed FakeSMC 2.5. I did my original install with Stella's installer as posted on the Lifehacker - Snow Leopard No Hacking Required page.

I would think it must be an issue with the audio driver. If I fix that and figure out why I can only boot my Windows 7 partition (not Boot Camp, not on the same disk) in VMWare only when the Boot Camp VM is first created I will be one happy camper!
