Airman, I am sure you have tried this, but maybe manually extract the catalyst drivers, hit the device mangler / display adapters / device properties / Driver / Update Driver / and then choose to install your own / uncheck show compatible hardware then browse to CX_whatever.inf in the ati directory. Choose radeon X1600 series in the model list and hit next to install. If it installs on reboot use AtiTool http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/ to check the clock speeds. Maybe it is worth a shot since I use this method to install catalyst drivers on notebooks from time to time. Good luck!

Anyway, congratulations guys ! This is a historic day that we'll be proud to tell to our little children :)

STEVE JOBS!

OK Looking like there will be a release tomorrow baring any last minute issues. Also be aware that as of the time I post this 20" iMacs are still a nogo. Of course I won't be suprised if there is a solution by that time. There will be 3 releases as it looks right now, 1 for the 17" iMac/Macbook Pro, one for Mac Mini, and one for the 20" iMac.

much appriciated for the updates AirmanPika! ;)

This is really good news!! Thanks for the updates.

I am hoping that when all the kinks get worked out (or somewhere close) i am going to sell my 17in 2.0Ghz iMac and my 1.33Ghz iBook. Going to start saving my pennies for the merom MBP when they come out and then try to get Windows to install on that.

Cant wait for this to happen, should me my computer science and engineering major a little easier for when i have to run those windows apps.

Keep the info coming.

Thanks

Well done I look forward to what we see tomorrow.

1 question I think alot of people will be asking is is this something that most people will be able to achieve or is it going to be something that the "not so technical" amoungst those on the planet are going to find tough?

To have this done is fantastic but the real impact will be dependant on if most people will be able to buy an Intel Mac and get this going with reasonible ease. Lets face it most of you here are pretty onto it technical genius's compared to the average person who can install XP on their system and get it running by grabbing a few drivers and not much else.

I wait with baited breath for the answer

cheers

Thanks you guys! This is amazing, glad my MacBook Pro is coming a couple weeks.

Once the directions are open to everyone, I am really excited to see the driver support take off. We need that x1600 working!

But the largest hurdle has been cleared - congrats!

(Unrelated edit: Narf, how are you and Blanka going to split the prize money? He's not telling me anything about his plans with the money :P)

was that at me? because I did see that, but then I recall Airman later saying something like,

"OK sofar the Acer X1600 drivers just lock up the imac on boot or during install."

notso good.
