OS X on the MSI Wind, Before it's Released

Do you think a PPF could be made for the Kalyway disc to add some of the extras for the Wind?

I wouldn't be able to do that, but think about this as a restore disc. You won't have to make any selections, just install and go.

stallarola, I thank that's the way to go!! restore disk with everything setup, just ghost it or acronis it onto your hd... brilliant. I don't have my machine yet but would love to help. though since the wifi does not work we still have to do some hardware mods, which is good I think (I wouldn't like to see black market retail versions of the wind with osx, that would draw the wrong kind of attention).

thanks!!

ok so only sound has to be fixed,

btw what happens if you put it to sleep and remove the battery?

It's sleeping to RAM as opposed to hibernating (sadly), so that will kill it.

I would love to see Hibernate working (that would be the icing on the cake for me), but AFAIK NOBODY has this working on a hackintosh?

You should try the DeepSleep widget. Though for some reason it takes like 30-60 seconds after the screen going off, to clean up. So makesure to wait around 2 mins after screen goes off, before removing battery.

Try waiting for 5mins before removing the batery, it might work. Though AFAIK, it sets up some paramter in the EFI, to instruct the system to reload file to RAM. So maybe thts why.

Ive read somewhere that the dell 1490 will work without having to modify the hardware, not sure if this is true tho.

This is true, however there are a bunch of MiniPCI wireless cards that should work.

Some might require a kext text edit. The 1490 is an old card and it's far to be power efficient.

An Atheros AR5BMB5 would be a better choice and is supported. (it requires a kext change)

The card is on top of wireless G cards.

Hmm are you sure this card will fit into the wind? Seems to be too large...

Can anyone test high-res video?

Even if it only does 720x x264 files, I would be very happy, and find a way to get one asap.

If it does 1080p (Yes, no benefit without a larger monitor/projector on the vga port), all the better :o

Plays 24 fps 720p at about 14 fps with the CPU at about 90%. Handles the same in 480p without a hitch. Keep in mind, you must almost halve the 720p file to get it onto the screen, whereas 480p is a pretty good fit.

On a mildly related note (was watching the trailer), The Dark Knight is going to kick some serious ass.

Quick question: AFAIK, it should just take a bit of kext hacking to get the stock wireless card working, right? (Since previous Realtek chipsets seem to work pretty well.) I haven't got a Wind yet, but once I do I'd love to help in getting the stock card to work.

There's a few realtek kexts out there, and it's quite possible one of those can be hacked about to work with the Wind, but I don't think anyone's really tried yet...

Find a friend that knows their {censored}e and you could probably easily patch a working Realtek RTL 8187 driver for SE. Here are the exact differences between the 8187 and the 8187SE.

Ubuntu .diff file for 8187SE

Ubuntu bug report for 8187SE

It should be noted that a user on another forum (can't remember which one - but they also stated the same here in an earlier post) sent an e-mail to MSI about OS X drivers for the 8187SE received a response that no drivers were in the works or planned for the near future.

Please help!

I had just got everything running perfectly on my 4211, and ran the combo update from 10.5.2 (iAtkos) to 10.5.4 - Everything went smoothly, but when my Hackintop came back on the touchpad and keyboard stopped working. I backed up all the old extensions, but can't find the correct ones to fix my problem...

... Any ideas?!

Luckily I have usb keyboard and mouse for now, so I can replace files if I just know which ones - but its not very portable anymore!

Yep, it looks like Apple really dropped the ball. They should have come out with a sub-notebook like this a long time ago. Would have preferred one over the Air. Oh well, looks like this MSI Wind is going to sell like hot cakes. Can't wait to get one and put OS X on it. The perfect little laptop :)

the diff file looks, well, not much different, eh? what you say we get this chip working? and by "we" i mean "the people that would know what to do with the diff file of a linux driver."

paul, so how's our wind hack been? you still enjoying it? still speedy enough for you for most netbook related tasks? you encountered anything speed-wise where you've been disappointed?

Loving it, and it's great for all my netbook related task. Performance is more than adequate, and i'm even trying out permanently underclocking when running on battery to save juice :)

EFI: Have you guys already noticed that the Wind is running EFI and a CSM?Only question: how to leave the CSM...

What are the implications of this? Being able to boot a vanilla OSX install without a hacked EFI layer?

You wouldn't happen to know which kext's work the internal keyboard and trackpad? Failing that, what would you do in this situation - I'm out of ideas!

Many thanks.

I'd reinstall with the Kalyway disc, as that's what the rest of us used and these installs are rock solid.
