    VMware "Fusion" Beta goes live

    By Swad, in OSx86,

Our very own Macgirl informs us that "Fusion," the VMware virtualization solution for Macs, is now being released in beta. VMware describes Fusion thusly:

The new VMware desktop product for the Mac, codenamed Fusion, allows Intel-based Macs to run x86 operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, NetWare and Solaris, in virtual machines at the same time as Mac OS X. It is built on VMware's rock-solid and advanced desktop virtualization platform that is used by over four million users today.

With Fusion, you can run traditional PC applications on your Mac: if you need to run PC applications, you can now do so by leveraging the power of virtual machine technology. Hmmm... sounds familiar...

You can download the beta from the Fusion Beta Program website. Release notes are here.

Let us know your impressions of this new product, especially in comparison to Parallels. What do you think?

OSx86 Boots on an Ultra Mobile PC

    By sHARD>>, in OSx86,

The Register is reporting on OnlyUMPC.com members' efforts to boot hacked OSx86 on their Ultra Mobile PCs, and it appears they were quite successful. A few interesting pictures, as well as a video of the slow boot times (small size means slower processors after all) have been posted. Now if only these things weren't so expensive, we'd finally have a new Apple PDA. Screenshots and video.

Thanks to Alessandro17 and guiyoforward for the heads up in Reader News.

Today, Apple released a new security update for Mac OS X 10.4.8 and Mac OS X 10.4.8 Server. The update fixes security issues with QuickTime for Java and Quartz Composer. Apple gives us the following description about the update:

Description: Java applets may use QuickTime for Java to obtain the images rendered on screen by embedded QuickTime objects and upload them to the originating web site. When this facility is used in conjunction with Quartz Composer, it becomes possible to capture images that may contain local information. This update addresses the issue by disallowing Quartz Composer compositions in unsigned Java applets. Quartz Composer compositions continue to function locally. Applications and signed Java applets that utilize QuickTime and QuickTime for Java are unaffected. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. It also does not affect the Windows platform. Credit to Geoff Beier for reporting this issue.
As usual, the update is available though Software Update and Apple's documentation site.

A Leak Has Sprung in Cupertino

    By REVENGE, in OSx86,

Unlike soft leaks of news, rumors, and Leopard, it seems that Apple's HQ in Cupertino has been the victim of a physical leak as well. Early Wednesday morning at around 12:55 A.M., somebody noticed there was water coming out of the wall in the building. It was later determined that the leak was coming from a broken pipe under the complex, which leaked water at a rate of 100 gallons per minute and flooded the building with over a foot of standing water on the building floor before the pipe was shut off at around 2:30 A.M.

Looks like "torrents of bits" aren't the only things leaking out of Cupertino these days...

After countless months of waiting, Adobe has finally announced that it will be releasing a Beta of the new Photoshop CS3 on Friday, December 15th. As expected, the release is a universal application, meaning that it will run natively on both PowerPC and Intel Macs. Adobe stated that this is an exciting time for the Mac and that Adobe wanted to help smooth out the transition to Intel-based Macs with a preview release of Photoshop CS3. Adobe gives us more info about the new Photoshop Beta.

Packed with new features, Photoshop CS3 beta also includes a pre-release version of a major upgrade to Adobe Bridge, as well as a preview release of the all-new Adobe Device Central. Photoshop customers can use Adobe Device Central to design, preview, and test compelling mobile content, created specifically for smaller screens. This new tool, integrated in the Photoshop CS3 beta, simplifies and accelerates the creation of mobile content through a preview environment and built-in device profiles.

To utilize Adobe Photoshop CS3 beta, customers require a serial number from either Adobe Photoshop CS2, Adobe Creative Suite® 2, Adobe Creative Suite Production Studio, Adobe Design Bundle, Adobe Web Bundle or Adobe Video Bundle. Adobe Photoshop CS3 beta is available in English only. Customers who have a valid serial number for all other language versions of qualifying Adobe products can download the software. Without a serial number, users can still download Adobe Photoshop CS3 beta, with the product expiring after two days. Customers must register online with Adobe or have an existing Adobe.com membership account to access the software. The System Requirements for Mac are OS X 10.4.8 or 10.5, a 1GHz G4 or G5, or an Intel-based Mac with 512 MB of RAM or more. Adobe will also be releasing a version for Windows XP.

Update: The Photoshop CS3 beta has been released. You can download it here.
