With VMware "Fusion" just going live, you'll now have a bit of comparing to do with the latest release of Parallels. The latest release of Parallels now contains many new enhancements including:

  • “Plug and play” USB 2.0 Support
  • Full-feature virtual CD/DVD drive
  • An even better Coherence mode
  • Better Boot Camp support including full support for FAT32 and NTFS partitions
  • And Parallels Transporter Beta2 bundled right into it (more info)
A download can be found at Parallel's Desktop Beta2 page.

Please let us know what you think and how it compares with VMware's "Fusion."

The new ability to attach Windows apps to the dock is great. I couldn't have USB 2.0 working though, or better said, I couldn't see any improvement in file transfer speeds.

Does the Parallels disk Images can be used in Fusion or viceversa?

"improved graphic performance - up to 50% faster!"

It seems with every new release Paralells announces the graphics speed has been boosted by 50%.

Although I do perceive an increase in speed, it's difficult to comprehend how they could be boosting the speed by half with each new build.

I really want to try the new build, but my trial key has expired a few days ago. I have purchased Parallels a few weeks ago, unfortunately the Serial from the version I obtained doesn't work with the beta versions. Is there a Beta key valid for everyone or something? I altready tried ordering a new trial key, but I got the same Serial I already had and which had expired.

Well, you could apply for a new free trial key by signing up using fake data and a different email address. However, I'm quite sure current keys do work for these betas. If I were you, I'd be hammering Parallels customers service email.

And to answer the question in the previous thread, yes you have to install parallels tools, however, parallels tools for bootcamp was a seperate install and is not required, in fact must be removed before first boot off of bootcamp partition in the new Parallels build. Wow, I even confused myself there. Bottom line, if you installed Parallels tools for bootcamp with the last beta, boot off of bootcamp nativly, uninstall parallels tools for bootcamp, jump into osx, make parallels boot off of bootcamp, and then install parallels tools via the tools menu.

This build doesn't even work with Leopard. The last build barely worked. It crashes right when you start it.

This whole thing is incredible.... Coherence is amazing; so is a full-screen VM combined with VirtueDesktops. For some reason it wouldn't let me boot my Boot Camp Vista install, but I just installed it into a VM of its own and it works great. Only need one Windows program anyway.

If I actually had any money, I'd buy the registered version in a heartbeat. Unfortunately all my $$ for the next several months is going toward the MBP I'm typing on. :) Great job, Parallels! :(

Memory utilization is VASTLY improved on this new version. Don't like that on a dual-head display if you go full screen it automatically puts it on your primary screen. Have found though if you take it off full screen and then go back it puts it properly on the secondary display.

VMware vmdk format is open to all so it can be written to be able to convert to other applications. Parallels, from what I know has it's own proprietory method. So vmware will have to reverse engineer the application to be able to convert the parallels disk image. You can not use a parallels created image in fusion and vice versa.

VMware Converter 3.o Beta might be of some use.

Thanks, domino. I hope some day both can work with Physical Disks. (SOON) :(

Parallels Desktop is becomming better and better! I completely dumped windows development and now run anything windows based(primarly for testing) I need on the mac through parallels. Developing was never been more fun:)

BTW, if you wanna be frugal when purchaising it there are some good discounts out there (I got it for 20% less from here)

I have the latest Beta build of Parallels (3150), and I really like it.. I started with I guess it was Build 3094 and my only complaint was that occasionally it would tell me I couldn't start it because it was already running.. so i'd have to restart the Mac to get it to go.. but I haven't had that problem since upgrading to the latest 3150 build.

I tried Fusion before getting Parallels, and I didn't like it much, and seemed to run kind of chuggy.

I'm running a 3.6Ghz P4 with HT, 1GB RAM and OSX 10.4.7 and using XP under Parallels, mostly just because I have a few apps I need to use from time to time that are 'Windows Only'.

Hopefully this rig will last long enough until I get enough cash saved up to bag a used MacPro.
