    OnMac joins InsanelyMac

    By Swad, in OSx86,

Information is everything. From the beginning, our community here has been built on combining good information, friendly help, and fun discussion.

In order to make more information available to even more people, I’m proud to announce that OnMac.net is joining the InsanelyMac network. OnMac is home to the first solution to run Windows on an Intel Mac (from those heady pre-Boot Camp days) and has been one of the premier resources during the Intel transition.

The combined knowledge of InsanelyMac and OnMac can accomplish great things, and we’re excited to create a community that’s even more comprehensive than today. Integration of the websites will take place gradually over the next few months, and I know you’ll like what you see.

Over the past year, InsanelyMac has grown to become the web’s best resource for everything relating to Intel Macs. The knowledge and experience of OnMac will make that resource stronger and better.

    Welcome OnMac!

    The Cost of Progress

    By sHARD>>, in OSx86,

While premiering a new site on our server (expect an announcement from Swad soon, sharp eyes may have already noticed), the transition got a little bumpy, and InsanelyMac got quite slow today. The good news is, we've spotted the issue and implemented a fix. Now, see if you can guess what's new!

    Apple Lang Syne

    By Swad, in OSx86,

A new year prompts reflection, careful thought, and the annoying necessity of learning to write a "7" instead of the habitual "6."

2006 brought a host of changes for Apple, so as we ring in the new year, it's natural to ask what 2007 holds. Cult of Mac, asking 2007 questions in a very 2006-ish world a few days ago, did a little reflection of their own. Some of their questions include:

    10. Is Apple ready to compete in two new fields (Home Theatre and Mobile Telephony)?
    8. Has the switch to Intel been successful from a third party software perspective?
    7. What should Apple credit for soaring Mac sales?
0.5 Did Sean Connery really make a better James Bond than Pierce Brosnan?

Ok. So I made that last one up. It's a good question nonetheless...

What are your thoughts about Apple's upcoming year? Expecting something big?

The Parallels developers sure seem to be keeping busy, despite the holiday season. Parallels just released their latest beta a week ago, and now they've got more for us to test out.

It is important to keep in mind that "this beta does not introduce any new functionality, but provides several very important fixes to the problems found in previous betas." Based on what was accordingly fixed, they seem to be referring to last week's release.

Some of the fixes would include:
"Round" corners found in Windows apps are now handled while in Coherence mode. Fullscreen and Coherence mode on secondary monitor fixed. Several apps such as MS Access or MS PowerPoint should now handle graphs correctly. Guest Linux screen resolutions in 24 bit mode fixed. Ability to switch off Command+ZXCV mapping or swap Control and Command keys. Better USB 2.0 support. (Web cams are still in the works) More information can be found at Parallels forum post and a download is located at Parallels download page.
Be sure to let us know what you think of this latest build!

We've heard from a lot of you that Mac-related gifts were at the top of your wish list this Christmas.

Did you get everything you want? Here's your chance to gloat about all your gifts. Don't gloat too much, though - the fat man just started his list for next year, and you know he'll be checking it twice.

(I got a Craftsman tool set, but that's what I asked for. Talk about old school tech...)

    Hi. I'm Jason.

    By Swad, in OSx86,

Like I mentioned last week, I thought it’d be a good time to formally introduce myself to our community. You’ve known me as “Mashugly” and “Mash” for well over a year now, and now that a lot of you are my good friends, I wanted to let you know a little more about me.

My name is Jason Swadley and I’ll be graduating from Drury University in May with dual degrees in Political Science and Speech Communication. Feel free to call me by my full name, but all my friends call me “Swad.” I live in Springfield, Missouri, a fairly large city in the middle of the U.S. and in one of the most beautiful parts of the country (the Ozarks). Like I mentioned in our introduction thread, I have a wide variety of interests – I love music, the outdoors, baseball, technology, philosophy, etc.

The name “Mashugly” came from our high school production of the play M*A*S*H. My character’s nickname was “Ugly” – hence Mashugly. The character’s real name in the play was John Black, which was the pseudonym I’ve been using for the site until now.

So, that’s me – I’m not really anyone terribly special, just someone who realized that it’d be great to have a place to talk about Intel and x86 based Macs. I hope this site has brought you as much fun as it has me.

Here’s to many more years for the work Mashugly started.

    Site Slowdown

    By sHARD>>, in OSx86,

Pages are occasionally loading extremely slow today due to some maintenance by our bandwidth provider. Please bear with us as they sort through this issue.

If you're unaware of all the nifty hidden tricks on Mac OS X, take a look at how you can have "more fun with the Shift key". Make sure and look at the comments for other fun tricks... If you're having a hard time finding Apple's iSight on their online store, then join the rest of us. Maybe iSight's absence is a sign of built in iSight in future Cinema Displays? Take a look at Digg's comments for more information. (Update)

With the latest Parallels build just released, along with the leak of Leopard 9A321, have you had any luck combining the two? Let us know along with any advice... Thanks to jonz14 for creating another great looking wallpaper. This time it's got a holiday spirit to it. Thanks... And finally, check out what

The CrossOver team has just released an update to its popular WINE-on-the-mac implementation. Along with a host of important fixes and updates, including better Half-Life 2 support, the new package boasts an experience in IE that should be entirely refreshing. With the Parallels team progressing at most alarming rate, the pressure has been intensifying for who will come out the champion in the world of Windows emulation. How befitting that the newest line of mac enthusiasts should decide who to crown the champion. Here I was thinking we bought our macs to run OS X on them

    What's new in this version:
Modified handling of Mac Suitcase fonts so that they are available to more Windows applications. In particular, fonts should now work properly in Visio 2003. Altered menu generation so that Managed bottles produce usable menus. Extensively revised the documentation and online help. Cut/Copy/Paste keyboard shortcuts (Command-X,C,V) work better. Added several general printing fixes. Fixed several Half-Life 2 crashes. Improved support for non-American keyboards. Improved support for non-English versions of some applications. Adjusted the GUI in numerous small ways. After this version, it will no longer be necessary to quit the CrossOver CD Helper in order to overwrite CrossOver. Macs with integrated Intel graphics chips (MacBook, Mini) can run DirectX 8.x graphics. Fixed crashes and install failures due to libraries in /usr/local. Fixed crashes due to certain font files. Tool palette windows are now movable. Improved scroll-wheel responsiveness. Fixed Create Icon to preserve working directory and command arguments more reliably. Fixed handling of Caps Lock. Fixed the IE screen-flicker that appeared for pages with Flash content Many other improvements to IE behavior Improved handling of CD detection and ejection. Installers that require multiple CDs should now install more graciously. Some fixes to Outlook 2003 behavior, including printing fixes. Improved support for Equation Editor Corrected display of fonts in DirectX 8.x games, like Half-Life 2. Changes resolution in full-screen games should work better. Numerous other Direct3D improvements. Download available here.
