Rosetta and Driver Upgrades; New Build is Leaked

We've received unconfirmed reports concerning a few interesting new toys under the hood of OSx86 10.4.3, including a vastly improved Rosetta and brand new ATI drivers - each far more complete than in previous builds.

First, the Rosetta emulation platform in 10.4.3 build 8F1111A has been upgraded to feature full G4 support, including Altivec. This not only adds a new layer of compatibility to Rosetta, but also improved speed for Altivec-equipped applications. This upgrade is reportedly available as a small downloadable update to build 8F1111.

Also, new ATI drivers available in 10.4.3 seem to offer much greater support for PC ATI graphics chipsets. Preliminary reports indicate that they may support most of the 9000 line, and parts of the X series, including mobile chipsets. Apparently NVIDIA systems have not been given this treatment. Is this discrepancy simply due to the pace of driver porting at Apple, or will ATI graphics hold a special place in the Mactel world?

On a side note, the weekend brought a newly leaked copy of OSx86 10.4.3 build 8F1111, the most recent seed from Apple. This seed, with its universal binary of iTunes, is a newer version than the build which was recently cracked.

Indeed.

From what I've heard, the iso patcher does not work. You have to manually edit the iso and change the files using his other patch packages. This, however, does not mix well with VMWare (and alot of native installations) becuase these patches are not expressidly for 8f1111. I'm just waitng until Maxxuss releases his 8f1111 patcher.

HI

Can you post the driver for radeon 9800 too?

I have updated the 10.4.1 to the 10.4.3 and then I've deleted all the ati*.kext file and put the ati.kext from jas. But I think I have made a big mistake doing this. :)

could sb please post, which (pci-express) ati-cards are supposed to run with the latest built (or even the drivers :)). i´d like to upgrade from the lame intel-graphics;)...

thanks!

These are all pc-style cards. Afaik, mac-edition cards won't work with osx86. This has to do with the difference in hardware structure, BIOS vs Firmware etc..

This all PAE/NX odyssey makes me think about how will final (which is not far away for shure) build is going to be protected. TPM protection has proven to be pretty useless, so they are tying OS X to hardware by using processor features.

The more specific they are, the narrower the userbase of a leaked release is: 10.4.1 should have left behid everyone without an SSE3 capable processor, but as we all know they -fortunately- only left behind SSE-only users.

On the current update, what are even more specific features available for DTKs and not most end users? NX for example. They could have used HT or even MCR also, but chose NX and PAE.

I'm betting final releases will be made to run only on Yonah processors, beign mandatory to have Vanderpool (virtual machine extensions) to run the system. Also note the rumours regarding Leopard using virtualizing technology and it all makes sense.

The point is probably not to hardlock OSx86, but to narrow the "ilegal" userbase to the minimum. What do you think?

I think you have it figuered out ! This IS Apple's STRATEGY... :)

I don't think that they will limit it to yonah processors but will make it alittle difficult for the average Joe to install. Thats similar to Microsoft's strategy reguarding Windows. They make the lionshare of thier Windows profits from corporate licenses and PC manufacturers "bundle licenses" and keep grandma from pirating XP by using activation codes.

Making it too hard to pirate will just keep Apple from expanding its user base in turn not making OS X third party developement economically desirable.

It wouldn't surprise me if it's just a bunch of CPUID checks, if Apple knows that they're definitely going to have those features and few others aren't for a while, until the point when those features become so commonplace they can come up with something better. Of course, that's probably just another in a line of things such as even better TPM, interlocking various components, shipping only the required drivers (i.e. remove generic ones), etc.

it just does not start. i unchecked all languages in the "international" system-preferences, i also unchecked all languages for the itunes.app, but it still does not start. the (renamed) ppc-version still works. any ideas?

2. if anybody succesfully tried an pci-express card with the latest release please comment here. thanks!

Not sure if anyone can help with this:

Using itunes intel version (internal apple dev release) on my 10.4.1 install, works great BUT takes about 15 seconds to startup at least which is super slow compared to my other software. the rosetta version started in like 4 seconds, how come intel build takes 4 times as long? Once it's running it's good, not WAY faster than ppc build but definitely faster overall.

So why the slow startup? Has anyone else discovered this?

using 10.4.1 with 10.4.2/3 partial updater patch (which works great on my machine), english osx install, asrock dual 915 478 board, prescott 2.8 ht, 1 gig (dual 512) ddr333 ram, .6 tb hd space (.2 tb is sata, .2 is pata, .2 is usb2 external pata), onboard intel extreme 900 accel graphx, onboard as97 surround sound, usb keybaord and usb cordless logitech mouse. All works great, just this wierd delay in intel itunes startup time (with hard drive doing lots of stuff the whole time).

Any thoughts? Config files I need to toast or something? Or just the way the apple internal release works (maybe lots of beta debugging code or something?)

The patches work great on CPU's with SSE3 though.

:) Every time I see that kind of message I tempted to change my 3500+ for a 4000+ (SSE3 capable of course) or a X2 and charge it to the plastic money

Hrrmph... Alright guys, lets see if someone's got an answer for me... I downloaded this from somewhere:

Torrent: OSx86 8F1111

Size: 2.81 GiB (3012765286 Bytes)

Description:

Hot off the presses. This one has the universal binary of iTunes 6.

taken from osx86project.org:

Alright, while all that is well and good... I completed the torrent, converted the .dmg to a .iso, and burned it to a DVD. My machine will boot from it (sort of) but restarts my machine immediately after you enter your startup options. -x had no effect, same problem. So I boot to my OSX86 partition (from the deadmoo image) and try to run the setup from CD... It won't run natively, but if I open with rosetta it tells me that Mac OSX cannot be installed on my hardware. I think I know that's some bulls**t. What's a guy to do? I have no idea what is even contained within this DVD or if I can even install it... If anyone can shed some light for me It'd be most appreciated. Thanks much.

Hi,

just want to report that it runs native with no problems on SSE3 NX PAE nForce4.

And yes, it installs as an upgrade, so you can keep all your settings from 8f1099

and don't have to do the post fixes on PS2 and IOATA.

:D

The patches work great on CPU's with SSE3 though. :) Too bad I can't seem to find any wireless now in this build.

I don't think you'll be seeing drivers for anything but Airport (broadcom 4301) coming from Apple. Somebody would have to write them. For all the good things Apple does, their "take what we give you and like it" attitude can be annoying at times.

I know this is :), but...

johnniecarcinogen-

You might float your idea by maxxuss about a paypal account - just tell him that many would gladly give to support his efforts.

Oh, and you can start a new topic in all the forums except the Front Page News one. I'll start one for you in the Opinions Forum.

Anyway, back on topic now... :)

Hello, I have a Flybook PC running on a Transmeta Crusoe TM-580 chip. I have tried to install the latest version of Tiger for Wintel and I get a karnel panic error at the startup. I am wondering if this chipset (Transmeta Crusoe TM-580) is supported. I have the fear that so far this Tiger version works ONLY with genuine Intel Pentium chips. Any advice please? Maybe I should try to install also the Rosetta s2 and s3 patches???
