New Chameleon Announced!

~pcwiz

Zef posted this on the Chameleon site today:

How do you mean customizable? You can replace all the images, the icons, the funny chameleon artwork, the fonts. Also you can set the background color, the transparency levels, the dimensons, positions of certain user interface elements. The image resource files can be either embedded into the booter or can be loaded at runtime by using a special .plist style configuration file.

Doesn’t embedding the images makes the boot loader too large?

With the current set of icons, images, fonts embedded, the booter size is about 300k. Without embedding the resources you will get about a 110k large booter. The maximum size of the booter is 392704 bytes (383.5k).

What image formats are supported?

The booter has built-in support for true color 24 bit PNG images with 8 bit transparency layer. We wanted to offer a high quality lossless image format which can be created, edited with many graphics applications across all platforms.

What if I still prefer the text mode interface?

We can’t switch between text mode and graphical mode at the moment after the booter has been started, but you still have a Boot.plist option to disable the GUI. This way you get the well known text based Darwin boot menu.

.....Read the rest on the Chameleon blog page here.

Hi Res images are available on their blog. IT IS NOT OUT YET SO DON'T BOTHER ASKING

as we all have right now access to working solutions for booting this new chameleon is just some kind of gimick (wich i also want to have)

since there is no real need for it from the comunity i have never expected it to hit the public before snow leo will arrive, simply to make sure it will work with snow leo.

So, basically you are saying that you will be waiting until SL is released? oh damn it :D

Hey they are releaseing it for free so we can't complain to much about it not being released. However when people in the know say it well be released in a couple weeks and it has been months and there is no one telling us why it is so late that can be annoying. I think their team takes on to much at once and over promises, they should finish one thing then move onto another not work on 2-3 things at once. This was delayed because they where working on voodoo kernel ok good enough reason, now they are working on this 10.5.6 voodoo kernel and the sound thing (which was supposed to be relased weeks ago ;). Sorry for the rant I do respect the voodoo team and truthfully it is out when it is out but they do need to clean up their PR.

People in the know have said there are no date for the release. People who think or claim to be in the know have said otherwise.

how about some form of hardware detection and the possibility to load different extension.mkext accordingly ...

that would be a revolution on the community. Just imagining a truly unified retail install ...

sorry for dreaming :|

Dreams CAN come true. Just that, probably, by that time, Apple Inc would've decided to profit from Leo sales and get crackin' on allowing OSX to be installed natively on third party HW!

Oh and this just in, "Hell has frozen over!"

Well that is not entirely true since Zeff himself said he was hoping for a release before Christmas. (It's on his blog) Now that would make one think it would be ready or delayed a while due to things not working out. But the problem with the Chameleon team is they don't do any PR at all. They announce this is coming out and that is it, they could at least find somebody to update the blog a little more often hell even once a month is better then nothing. And since the site is never really updated I could see how some people think this program is vapourware or are a little less then pleased by the teams behavour. Yes I also understand the team doesn't owe anybody anything and they are doing all of this for free but they also didn't have to announce the app at all, they could have just released it at some future date and said suprise here you go. So why did they announce it the only reason I can see is to build hype and get the community behind them but then they just leave that community hanging with very little news after the inital announcement.

You made me recheck the site..

and rechecked again..

This is what I read (quoted) from blog:

Can I have it now?

No. Please don't ask for it as you will get it when it's released.

What's next? Do i have to wait for next christmas ;-)?

We're still fighting with issues and polishing the code but freezed the features. So instead of staying quiet, we're going to reveal other features in the next post on this week.

Now, it's posts like yours that make people really think there is an ETA, and yes, it becomes annoying.

The main reason for revealing the features of the new (in the works) booter, was because people kept asking for updates, news about the latest progress etc.. That, apparently didn't go well :(

Kabyl, I for one respect your team and am very patently awaiting the release of the new bootloader. Everyone here is just anxious to get their hands on it. Maybe you guys could kick around the idea of (in the future), releasing "public betas" of working milestones? That might tone down the community response to the waits between releases.... Think of it this way, it is because of how good your software is, that the community gets itchy between releases... If your stuff sucked, no one would care if it took 10 years between releases... :-) Keep up the good work guys!!!

lol

Chill people, it's only a bootloader. Once you're at the desktop, it has done its job.

Jesus Christ, this is turning into a soap opera..

You can already do almost all the things that are announced with existing tools already, and/or patched versions of Chameleon that are already available here in the forum.

The question that you should be asking is when Voodoo Kernel 9.6.0 will be out. :(

Yes this is what I want to know ....

I have now defected to the AnV kernel, for no good reason. There is no difference that I can tell from using 9.5.0 Voodoo Final.

Just read the documentation (the thread) before installing it, and be careful it doesn't turn your Hackintosh into a Mac Book Pro. Unless that's what you want. I think AnV has a fetish and secretly wants all hackintoshes to be Mac Book pros.

I have AnV kernel installed and my hackintosh turned into an iMac7,1 which I love it, if you see that you hack turned into a MacBook, it is easy to change the configuration name.
