Hacked OSx86 Updated to 10.4.3

Swad

We've received reports that the rather creative OSx86 hacking community has created another release, this time to update existing 10.4.1 installations to many of the new features introduced in 10.4.3. Sources indicate that the new security features implemented in 10.4.3 have prevented a full release and that this update is in lieu of that release.

Mixed results post patch.

Hardware: P4-630 / 915guxl / GMA900 / SATA ICH6

Performed an initial native install via patched DVD. System has been rock stable, but my interest was piqued due to Flash support and the tap/tun drivers. Before the update, my load averages were always near-zero and the system was extremely responsive. After the update, my load averages are hovering at around 1.5 with minimal system activity. There does not seem to be a single culprit for the increased CPU usage, so I suspect that this may be due to the "SSE2" patch, which I do not require. I'm going to attempt to revert to the original files where required, and keep the rest of the updates. Flash functionality is also broken (swf's load but do not show animation). A marked improvement from the old dialog boxes, though!

Xbench results follow.

General notes:

  • Disk performance unchanged
  • User Interface scored 50% of the pre-patch score. The difference was visible.
  • OpenGL is down 40%
  • CPU result is up to 43 from 17!
  • Overall result 44 (pre) 39 (post)

Pre-patch Xbench (10.4.1, only oah750 patch applied)

xbench_pre1043txt.txt

Post-patch Xbench (above+whatever this included)

xbench_post1043txt.txt

If any of the patch devs are lurking, feel free to contact me, I may be able to help in some way. At least I got MenuMeters going on my own  Perhaps this release could be improved through the implementation of custom installs. Sometimes carpet bombing is not the answer! Thanks for the hard work.

amazing improvment in speed issue, see my screenshot:

8 fold increased in veclib FFT

Synthetic benchmark increased is fine but real world apps as in Quartz and OpenGL seems lacking or minimal.

CPU usuage on other systems seemed way up on ordinary processes (itune, chess etc)

I am not sure this is worth patching.

Finally, someone that actually know the difference between synthetic bench and real world performance. That's why you n00bs can't compare a Sandra test to real world test. We need more tangable posts such as yours.

Thanks!

Just installed, all Xbench results the same except veclib FFT. Since this is the only test that shows any improvement, I have to ask what applications/tasks will benefit most from this?

Tried flash in Safari -- attached is a screen shot of www.every10minutes.com. Went to macromedia site, same thing. Notice it shows distored screens from xbench, activity monitor, and the dock. The first two had been used during this session, but were not open when visiting the site. It appears to be displaying some sort of cached video display.

note: not sure if it is just wishful thinking, but safari does seem a bit faster.

EDIT: DVD Player now runs, but will not go past the copyright screen. With this new patch, i'm able to play DVDs in VLC

EDIT2: Flash causes DeerPark to quit, however i did make a bit of progress with Safari. After it loads the page if I minimize the window and restore it, the flash animation is diplayed, err, sort of (Using cyan and magenta). This must be done on every page with flash.

Ehhh... of course Xbench doesn't give us much of an idea of real world performance! In the patches instructions it says that if the patch was installed correctly you should see an increased score in xbench, so thats probably the reason we are comparing xbench scores. We are all well aware that xbench isn't real world performance.

I've seen some posts that say CPU usage seems slightly higher after the patch. If your system feels snappier, chances are you will see some increased CPU usage as a result. If your system feels slower along with increased CPU usage, then there's a problem but I haven't seen a post of this result. In other words. reports of slightly higher CPU usage doesn't mean the patch isn't worth it.

I see a marked difference in Safari's speed with the patch. Flash still doesn't work for me, but if I need it I just use Firefox. iPhoto seemed snappier while touching up a few photos. The patch seems great so far.

O.K.... and that's why you have an XBench score in your sig...

Anyway, as stated above me, this realease was to improve perfomance, not compatibility. Although it is getting some people a chance to get farther in the DVD app appearently... To test this in the most EASY way possible with solid numbers, we choose XBench. No reason to start flaming people because you don't get what you want.

Earlier, I was pwned (so to speak) in my own "n00bness" when I installed this update on a seperate partition and thought that all appropriate hooks would be placed to the OS and whatnot. WRONG. You do have to install it on the primary "Boot" partition for it to work properly.

I was getting an overall of 42 I believe and now am getting a 68. I am running a 2.8 P4 @ 3.15 on an 865GM MB with a Gigabyte 6800, no CI or QE of course. Native install this time. No patches of any sort with the exception of the alpha NV drivers from macvidia and this update of course.

EDIT: Flash works peachy keen for me now btw, would not install before.

You n00bs want to talk about xbench, if you ppl haven't noticed yet, there is such forum that exists on this site. I think you are unaware of the different between a system getting 50,000 marks on a bench suite yet not being able to play any real games or run "productivity" applications.. Oh, there is a difference with posting a direct link to the xbench site and posting the whole damn mark that takes more than half the page. That just shows you something, and if you can't see it, I will be more than happy to point it out for you. Almost 10 pages in this thread and about half of it is trash.

Have you read the readme included with this package? it states you can tell it has been successfully installed by running xbench, which is why many of the posts refer to xbench scores.

You have over 270 posts, i'd bet half of them are trash such as this one.

BTW: is that an xbench score in your sig?

I'm sure you have read it as well yet still don't unstand it. It says "you can tell", not post it so that people know and can tell that you have it installed correctly. And it is obviouse that you do not read what post I do post on this forum. How about clicking my member stat for once. BTW, that sig has been there since day 1 on this forum. Nothing new and certainly nothing to boast about.

You're right. My appologies to everyone for not making the situation better.

PS. What makes you think MacWorld isn't looking at this :).

yep me too on deer park, although safari feels snappier and flash works perfectly, so safari it is then...

my xbench went from 47 to 56, about 19% increase not the 50-70% xbench suggested in release notes.

The graphics "feels" better, in that the screen scrolls smoothly and quicker

Nice work though, thanks ladies and gentlemem

*note that in about this mac it still shows 10.4.1, with reboot, disk verification and repair; the upgrade has installed though, I know that from the xbench, snappier feel in real terms and the flash plug in working (not to mention deer park not); anyone else had this problem (saw one poster at beginning of thread, but no resolution posted) My system spec/configuration is in signature; and ita a DVD release one image with the new patch applied on top

There's a simple fix for that- credit goes to Callysto from win2osx forums ...

:.: This probably should be in the trash but here goes, to create the illusion of running Mac OS X 10.4.3 edit /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist so it looks like this:-

<key>ProductBuildVersion</key>

<string>8f1099</string>

<key>ProductCopyright</key>

<string>1983-2005 Apple Computer, Inc.</string>

<key>ProductName</key>

<string>Mac OS X</string>

<key>ProductUserVisibleVersion</key>

<string>10.4.3</string>

<key>ProductVersion</key>

<string>10.4.3</string>

then when you click the little blue apple and About This Mac your version shows 10.4.3 daft really and not at all useful i don't think :.:

Enjoy :D

The archive's list of contents cannot be created.

It was working fine before the update.

I installed this OSX86 on D916GAG motherboard, applied AntiTPM patch from MAXXUS, then all the steps mentioned in the install guide(http://www.osx86.theplaceforitall.com/howto/). Then I applied the 10.4.3 updates. I dual boot with XP, so every I time I restart, It hangs first time at the

AppleIntelPIIXATA and some ICH6 message. Then it says root booting device not found.

Then if I try again, I get to desktop and after a while, system hangs again and I have to hard restart with the reset switch.

Also, the safari says browser updated every time I open it after the restart. flash seems to working fine.

Any solution to this hanging or reboot problem.

( I tried clearing the cache and repairing the disk permissions).

Thanks for all the help

the fix for deerpark is simple, disable flash and it will stop crashing. firefox doesn't know how to handle x86 plugins

Hi All...

I cant boot my Dell 4700 after the update..I can start it up in Safe mode but it doesnt take my password which I created in 10.4.1.

Ive read here that some have changed the permissions..can that be done from single user mode?

Has anyone tried the 10.4.2 Dev DVD? I'm DL'ing it now.

Thanks to all who have helped to make this happen!!!

sorry but what does the update install?...

And I mean not only new apps...

is there a change in uname -a runningin terminal?

is that change congruent with the kernel versión in the developer ed?

or is it a 10.4.1 patched kernel with only new apps?
