Another class action lawsuit has been filed against Apple and AT&T, targeting the two companies' practices when it comes to the iPhone. Similar to the suit filed a week and a half ago, when Paul Holman accused Apple of entering into an unlawful agreement with AT&T that ultimately caused the two companies to commit a number of illegal acts. This includes preventing the iPhone from being unlocked and used on other carriers, as well as deleting the 3rd party applications that were on the iPhone before the update.

Maybe someday Apple will sell the iPhone unlocked. A lot more people would've bought the iPhone if it was unlocked. AT&T should not be the only option for the iPhone. I would've bought the iPhone but I don't want to switch to AT&T. The day I will buy the iPhone, is the day when the iPhone will be sold unlocked. For now, I might get an iPod Touch.

I wonder why everybody is so down on Apple for this. The iphone being locked to AT&T is AT&T's idea not Apple's. If the courts force Apple to sell iphones unlocked, Apple will laugh all the way to the bank. Such a ruling would let them to not honor the terms of their deal with AT&T and free them up to sell phones to everybody. The only people that don't want this to happen are the telco companies Apple got into bed with.

From day 1 I figured this would happen.. Ah well, poor AT&T, always hated em anyways, and Cingular :thumbsup_anim:

In the meantime, I just enjoy my unlocked iPhone. Would be nice if soon enough I can register it and not have to bother bout not having warranty on it

There was a similar uproar when the XBOX was released. Like the iPhone it was technically a computer running a scaled down version of an OS from its makers. The only difference is the XBOX could run 3rd party software, THE GAMES. Obvioiusly these were only games which were certified by MS. People chipped it, re flashed it, and softmodded it. MS issued an update to the XBOX through XBOX Live which made it more secure and all the files people had been storing on the XBOX HDD were deleted. People were fuming that their files had been removed by MS but MS insisted it was unintentional however the XBOX was not meant to be used in such a way and they were not responsible for what happened. I don't know if any official action was taken against MS for this but it is an eerily similar situation.

With the law in France making Apple and Orange sell SIM free handsets there i can only see it being a matter of time till they are being sold everywhere. (although they have yet to decide a price for the SIM free version - no doubt it will be a lot more than the locked versions)

If it's AT&T's fault then shame on Apple for not being strong enough to asert their own wishes on their own product.

O2 recently got the iPhone contract over here and are releasing some time in November I think, but you can already buy unlocked iPhones.

For me, I'm gonna stick with my iPod Touch and Nokia N95, I don't mind carrying two awesome devices around with me.
