Mysticus C*
@LioNEXT: I suggest you to edit the first post with the information regarding the new all-in-one installer (which i will be making in couple of mins to add the usb driver restore for people use kalyway 10.5.2 with default settings...) please I will add the new installer in couple of mins and I highly suggest you to add the new installer to first post and add information regarding the problem solution with kernel/system.kext issue as well as PCGENUSB2 issue... most likely you should add the information/notes and guide regarding these two issues as the first paragraph, and then place the screen cap (which I will include in a bit) and download link underneath the screen cap... Mysticus C*
Here is the new Installer containing all the packages under one installer... DOWNLOAD Instructions: 1 ) Download the zip file 2 ) Extract them on your desktop or where ever you like 3 ) Open the folder wherever you extracted the files 4 ) Locate/find the file named "USB Not Mounting Fix v1.0.mpkg" and double click/run the file 5 ) You will see first location selection where you want to install this. (I made it this way because you may want to install it on another partition or hdd as well) 6 ) In the next window, click on Customize, to be able make your own choices... 7 ) By Default: "9.2.0 System.kext only" and "USB Family Original Restore Backup" is selected. Reasons: 1) I see that many people are using Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD, which by default has 9.2.0 sleep kernel, selected but installs 9.2.2 system.kext... To solve one of the two issues, you need to have correct system.kext. So this is why I made 9.2.0 system.kext only default 2) As default on the Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD, PCGENUSB2 is also selected. This is a full driver package that is needed only on handful of mobos/laptops which has problematic bios that doesnt release the USB 2.0 high speed bus information to OS as a result it causes High Speed ports to not work. However majority of the people do not have this issue... Therefore I made this by default selection for people who accidently installed pcgenusb2... Although at this stage you can restart,I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Steps 8,9,10 that are optional but useful on some unique situations... Some abbreviations: S: System L:Library E:Extensions C:Caches 8 ) Open a finder window, and locate /S/L/Extensions.mkext file. Right Click on it, and select Move To Trash (enter password of course later) 9 ) Locate /S/L/E/C/com.bla bla file and same right click and move to trash 10 ) Restart and at boot press F8 where it waits for 5 secs. Type: -v -f (this is gonna recreate driver caches and fast boot caches. the reason why we are doing 7,8 is sometimes these caches prevent new drivers from loading. Although Leopard has auto update function on these caches, sometimes better take precaution...) now PLUG 'n' PRAY... hope it helps everyone... good luck... note: I removed the older usb fix installer. Boot from a install disc (DVD) first, then access the hard drive to change it (if you dont know how, read through the forums any threads on installation and you will know). If you can access the boot menu, try safe booting at least with -x option. Well if you need 9.2.0 why dont you just manually put it in the extensions folder (delete the current one first). Directions were there. Read the thread again: 4) Repair permissions (chown & chmod thing) 5) Delete the extension.mkext file and the file inside /S/L/E/Caches folder (com.apple.kext.info) 6) Restart. If you dont know how to repair permissions, here it is: sudo chown -R 0:0 /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext Dont forget to delete the extensions.mkext file and the com.apple.kext.info file in Caches folder. good luck [PS: if you are using the installer method, it may help to remove the system.kext first. then use the installer. after that delete the mkext and caches file. on reboot, start with -v -f option. LioNEXT
@Mysticus C* Yea, I came across your post a few days ago and I responded here in this thread with just WOW! I wish you had that thread when I started my hackintosh project. Nevertheless, I got to say I prepared pretty much what you did on my notebook (yes, I made a notebook for writing down the commands that I didn't know and that I would come across, what worked and what didn't work, all the tips and tricks I gathered reading through the forums, etc. Its so much easier now when I forget something, I just need to turn few pages to get back to it). As you mentioned, there is no explanation of this behavior of impetuosity. It is pretty much what we see around - fast food phenomenon. I think your thread should be made a sticky and should be there on top of any post / forum page. It would be nice actually, if these forum page layout is updated to include a separate frame on the top to carry few absolutely necessary stickies on every page. That way lot of newbies could be directed to read that or at least will come into attention more and more. @keypox, Mysticus C* has a tutorial on his thread about how to move and copy files. May be you can put your system.kext on a pen drive. So boot from the install disc. Open Terminal. Then, "move" the current file system.kext to sytem.kext-null or something. Then, "copy" the system.kext (9.2.0 version) on pen drive to the hard drive partition. It would be something like: cp -R /Volumes/PenDrive/system.kext /Volumes/XYZ/System/Library/Extensions/ repair permissions. delete mkext file etc. That should help in booting if you are toast. Try -x for safe boot just in case. keypox
OK thanks alot guys I was actually downloading leo4allv3 but I would rather just fix it. I will try using the advice you gave. I did search for how to repair permissions but the search on this forum really sucks. I am new to linux/osx but it seems good. Going to try to get this thing running now. Ok so I have mounted the Disc by booting with DVD and doing /sbin/fsck -fy /sbin/mount -uw / but how do i access usb stick? where is this "Mysticus C* has a tutorial on his thread about how to move and copy files? is this it http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=87901 dont see how to do usb stick thing HMM actually it seems that the file is still there System.kext. So I am going to repair it and do the other stuff and hope i can boot. Update: Cannot remove files get error "devise is write locked" EDIT HMMM it seemed even though ti got this error it still deleted them Tried using rm -R /System/Library/Extensions.* rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/caches/com.* hmm didnt work get Debugger called: <panic> guess i will try leo4all3 and atleast i know how to cd and dir, cd, delete, copy... via osx Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/95789-solving-usb-problems-usb-devices-do-not-mount/page/7/#findComment-748137 Share on other sites
LioNEXT
@keypox, Put the usb drive, use install disc to boot and get to the installer portion (where you choose language and then it shows the installer). At that stage, choose Terminal from the menu bar (its in one of the options i have forgotten). Once there, you can go the extensions folder and delete the file. cd /Volumes/XYZ/System/Library/Extensions ls and you will see the whole list (ls command) rm -rf System.kext now remember where in pen drive you have saved the file. The pen drive can also be accessed, just to verify for your curiosity, as cd /Volumes/PenDriveName Then use the copy command I gave you above. If somehow that does not work, use the ditto command. ditto /Volumes/PenDriveName/System.kext /Volumes/XYZ/System/Library/Extensions Run the ls command again to check the list if it has been copied. repair the permissions again (always add /Volumes/XYZ before the path if you are working at root; or go to the folder directly using cd command and then repair. Delete mkext etc and pray that it works fine now. PS: I have used ditto command few times and it seems to does same as copy but keeps the permissions of the original folder as well. if someone can illuminate me more on its usage, I will welcome it. thanks. Mysticus C*
i hate to call people noob (=stupid) but some people really deserves it... (i dont know how many times i have to write this sentence, i guess doesnt matter even million times written) they usually dont read CORRECTLY, CAREFULLY, OR NOT READ AT ALL... they usually prove me right after they claim the same things again and again... keypox: look again... I will show/quote couple of sentences from my other topic which you claimed to read (also read my BOLDED WORDS above), The topic starts with this sentence... (post#1) "Newbies Guide to Basic Stuffs: Learn This Before You Jump/Install Any Version of OS X" continued... "Why I added this Paragraph? Most people do not like to read long stuffs... New people come and go everyday to the scene, but not all of them are very successful. Why? Because they are noobs, they are stupid. Why start too harsh? Well I didnt start harsh actually, check the title? It says "newbie", i would say NOOB, but I didnt. Because some people are clever, although they are new to the stuffs. You will not understand everything, but you will at least have an idea about what is going on... It is long, but very usefull later and at least you will know where to look for, when you see some of these terms on topics... In POST#2, I provide the information about "What To Knows" before during and after installation. I usually update this post, as much as I can to reflect more problems/solutions. So check back this post#2 regularly as well... POST#2 is very important for all newbies, and must be read and understood before jumping to installation. Read it carefully couple of times! When you are confident enough, continue to installations/updates..." and post#1 finishes with these sentences... "There many more things to know obviously, but these are the most needed things for newbies to start from. This way you will give less headache to others. Please read it and refer to it, when you are doing simple tasks, like driver changing, kernel changing, deleting files etc... so do not ask questions about these simple tasks unless you really cannot solve by just doing so" but noobs are everywhere, and they claim information is not there, although it is standing right in front of their eyes... (post#2) "....For USB not mounting: you can try updating to 10.5.2 (the files included in the guide, and by default correct versions set, people who used my guide to update, never had this issue, but this is another topic,well...) and see if it makes any difference, also, if you restart with the usb device plugged, it should mount and work ok... Cause & Solution to USB Problem: The problem usually caused by changing kernel version that is not matched to system.kext version. To solve it, you can either find correct system.kext with the kernel version or, by updating to 10.5.2 using my update package and do not change default setting: System.kext and kernel that are choosen matched versions already! I used kext helper to try to install the kext and I think that is what caused my problem. Unfortantly my GF is using my laptop so I can't try to fix it now . But I guess I will try to moving the system.kext over again, though when I booted with -s from the DVD and mounted the HD the file was already there. I repaired and removed the said files but on reboot got the same error. It was an error on a different file when I get back my laptop I will type the full error. LioNEXT
Folks, folks, lets keep a sanity here and not make this thread a referendum on noobs If people don't read carefully, then they are the one who will get frustrated and give up. Have you guys seen netkas' forums. He keeps it cool and answer only when he sees a legitimate one. The best course is to point out the right place for people and if they still do it wrong or can't figure out, well then just don't follow up and leave them up to their fate. So lets keep it to the topic! Toonces Katt
I have been having intermittent issues with mounting USB thumb drives since installing Leo4Allv3 on my Quad Core Dell Inspiron 530. Everything else works great. My Logitech Orbit MP webcam and Apple aluminum keyboard work fine. My BT dongle and mouse do not show up as bluetooth but work just fine. My Internal USB card reader also works just fine with various media. System My kernel and system kext match as far as I can tell. When I plug a thumb drive in it takes 2-5 times before it mounts no matter which USB port I use though I have at least 1 thumb drive that never gets recognized. System Profiler sees that the thumb drive is plugged in but does not show it as a drive. Just a USB device. Attached is a screenshot of uname -a, kextstat | grep "USB" & the system plist.info. It looks like they match to me. I just tried inserting one and this time it recognized it but did not mount it. Mysticus C*
i will check the installer again, to see what is the probem, but in the mean time, you can manually delete the system.kext it should be ok... i have been doing many installs and packages lately, and trying different versions of dvds to see goods and the bads.. so didnt have much time to check the installers... i will check the last installer and see what is wrong... it should have forced install the drivers but apparently it doesnt do it correctly... will see what comes... will test it and once find the reason, i will post a new installer with correct force install... which in any situation will install/replace the system.kext and othes correctly... so what you can do for now, is manually delete the system.kext (also if you wanna change the kernel as well, manually delete it) how? open terminal window (applications/utilities/terminal) type the following commands: sudo su password: (it will ask for password, so enter it) ================================= (this step is only if you are gonna change the kernel as well in custom window, if you are not deleting kernel, skip this step) cd / ( you are in root now) rm -R mach_kernel (deleting the kernel) ================================= cd /System/Library/Extension/ rm -R System.kext rm -R caches/com.* ================================= (now dont close the terminal window, just run the installer i posted) choose partition you are installing click on on customize window ================================= (now this step is important, if you deleted kernel in previous step) select say, "9.2.0 ToH sleep kernel", and unselect "9.2.0 system.kext only" ================================= (if you installed Kalyway 10.5.2, with default settings,) keep USB Familly Back up as selected... else unselect it, if you dont know, just keep it selected ================================= installation finished? go back to terminal window again rm -R /System/Library/Extensions.mkext ================================= reboot press f8 when it asks and type -v -f ================================= this will definetely fix the usb related issues, in the mean time, i will check the installer and find what the problem is... ================================= good luck...
