dci693
I would like to have an inexpensive intel-based Mac. However, in my view one of the key reasons to work with a Mac is stability and logical, predictable operating system.I noticed that you have p5w mobo. Could you make a short comparison of these two motherboards? Is it a better solution? rraleighh, the stability of any hack is a huge YMMV. Simply put, any hack can stop working at any time for any reason. That said, I haven't read a single instance on these forums of a hackintosh setup that just up and quit. Bottom line: the best machines for running OSX are obviously Macs. If you can't be without a working, reliable Mac for any length of time, then buy a Mac. If you can put up with a random outage that might last a few hours at the worst possible time, then go the hackintosh route. mtotho's probably very busy playing with his new P5W board, so he hasn't had time to answer. The P5W board is simply in a different class in terms of build quality and features. Quite a few people on this forum have it. I have the Asus board also, but haven't unboxed it, so I'm also waiting for mtotho to report on it. clv101
The P5W board is simply in a different class in terms of build quality and features. I don't think it's really in a different class to the GA-P35C-DS3. In what way is it better? Regarding how good a Hackintosh is - if a MacMini is powerful enough for you and isn't missing any really important features you need then I'd say it's better for you than a Hackintosh. I spent £300 on my Hackintosh, ~£100 less than the entry Mini and got a 3GHz CPU, 4GB, faster/larger HDD and faster video. That said I don't totally trust it yet, not like I'd trust a real Mac. I only did the 2nd install yesterday and once I've added my software, bookmarks, user data etc. we'll see. I've yet to explore TimeMachine - maybe once I've got that working reliably my confidence might improve. mtotho
@ everyone. Sorry for any update confusion.. then way i posted works.. if it doesnt work for you, you did something wrong.. and you can visit the update support thread. Also you could try kalyway combo update (you have to manually update the vanilla kernel though) I added a guide on how to fix system profiler and about this mac to say correct values. For anyone using AHCI and your drives are orange.. go to post one and download the 2 kexts i put in the AHCI area and replace them.. it will get normal drive functionality back. Also, anyone with trouble seeing shares in finder.. you can manually connect by going to Go-connect to server and then type "smb://192.168.1.X" or whatever the ip is Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/83689-how-to-install-on-gigabyteasuscompatible-boards/page/14/#findComment-625697 Share on other sites
dci693
ok, to fix system profiler value and shutdown/sleep issues, get brazilmacs post patch and install those kexts.Sorry, but any chance you have a link to that post patch or a hint on where to find it? I looked at your revised guide, but it didn't seem to mention it. Would love to fix sleep/shutdown. Thanks. EDIT: Argh. You had my hopes up! jt2322
Followed this guide and everything is working great on my Gigabyte P35-DS3R with 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo. One thing; my SATA hard drives show up as external drives. Is anyone else getting this? seanmcd
IF You aren't doing this from scratch, (ie, updating your working install) you need to simply save any non-vanilla kexts you have applied, and then reapply them after the update. And for the orange drive icon - if you are using AHCI mode, this is correctly showing a removable sata drive. Just get the application called Candybar, search for your favorite drifve icons, and change the icons to anything you want. mtotho
Ok forget my post that says use brazilmacs patch.. i have a guide to fix about this mac in post one. Also there is a fix for orange hd icons in the AHCI VS ACHI enabled area. Do not just use candybar to change the icon... it doesnt just make it look like removable.. it also treats it as removable.. messing up permission and performance. rraleighh
@ clv01, dci693 Thank you for your replies! According to your experience is it correct to say, that it is better to buy a basic and supported 100Mb ethernet card, instead of struggling with on-board ethernet? I refer to all Gigabytes models covered in this topic, that is models GA-P35-DS3x. ------------------------ If I am not mistaken, within this thread the topic of Firewire Controller is not covered. Actually, I can imagine having a Mac without Firewire port, but on the other hand all Apple computers I was using so far had Firewire and moreover, it seems to me that running Tiger without Firewire port cancels the possibility to connect another Mac in Target Mode and in particular use Migration Assistant. This mobo, that is GA-P35-DS3L, does not have Firewire. How do you deal with this problem? Any pci card will do or should I buy something special? @ clv01 I read your topic Fundamental Question about OSx86 and looks that you were troubled by similar doubts about OSx86. Did you find a reference to <people running "perfect" systems>? It would be nice to locate them. I refer to all Gigabytes models covered in this topic, that is models GA-P35-DS3x.I actually went and bought a cheap Realtech 8139-based NIC card after my 1st failed install on the DS3L mb because I couldn't get the onboard LAN working. I then read somewhere that enabling the onboard LAN Boot ROM fixed that issue. This adds boot up time, and I read of another user having an issue using the Apple Bonjour service (makes it easy to connect to shared peripherals on the network). I have not heard of problems when people used a supported PCI NIC card. This may be the easiest solution in the end. This Encore 8139-based NIC card is just $6.50 (with free shipping!) from NewEgg is now cheaper than when I bought it. For that price, you might as well try it. I simply live without Firewire. Ironically, my XP desktop had Firewire (via a sound card), and I've actually got two spare PCI Firewire cards lying around, but I've not attempted to put them in my hackintosh (yet). Besides, I don't have devices that need Firewire so I couldn't even test it. mtotho
im fairly sure that most firewire pci cards (unless it goes through sound card) are widely accepted. chevy2410
I'm using a cheap generic pci 400 firewire card and it works great.I could never get the on board Lan to work. It always kept giving its' self it won IP address. No matter what I tried. I just went to my local comp shop and bought a used Realtek 8139 pci lan card. Put it and BAM! worked right away. My system is now virtually perfect now - the only "problem" is that Finder doesn't see my Window shares, however that's overcome just by entering the IP of the destination. So Generally I'm there now. I have TimeMachine set up with a 2nd internal drive. I have all my software on there now... so all's good. Just need a few days to get comfortable with it I guess.
