If I don't need all the "Deluxe" features of ASUS P5W DH DELUXE, is there a board that is as compatible but without all the extra bells and whistles (for example, just 1 PCIe 16, no RAID controller, no WIFI). Basically something closer to $100

i dont think so newbmac, however there are probably similiar asus boards.

@anibalin, which kexts u using, those results are actually slightly better than mine

@mrhicks. You can use up to 64 gigabytes of ram (if your board supports it, our doesnt) without AHCI. The only thing is with 4gb's of ram on alot of boards.. they recieve kernel panics at various times without AHCI. You can still have 8gb of ram.. its not an issue of not being able to go over 8gb of ram.. just not being able to use the last bit of available ram.. so if the problem occurs at all with 8gb (i dont know if it does) it would be with the last .5gb of the 8gb

@Dukebound.. did you go into sound preferences and actually change your output with what is connected. Only the lime colored line out port and digital works... and headphone port

dude you made my day! thanks so much!

You don't say what features you DO need, but what about the board this forum was originally written to address? The Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L? Mtotho used it for a previous build and I am using it. I haven't tested everything out, but I think everything I need is working. Mtotho said it was 95% compatible, whereas the Asus was 100%. The Gigabyte goes for about 90 US+shipping.

Under 10.5.1, shutdown and sleep did not work, but under 10.5.2 they do. This might also depend on the exact peripherals you've got.

well my little chart on compatibility was more of a joke than anything (did u see how mac pro wasnt 100 percent)

DS3L sounds good for your need.. only reason i stopped using it is cause i broke mine.

and @ anibalin again, i compromised.. the netkas smbios was terrible for me... so i immediately got rid of that. The one i have in post 1 doesnt report memory for me correctly.. but it does however report the motherboard model.. which is worth it for me. I just manually edited the about this mac values to say my real memory speed.

LOL. Dude, seems like you have a history of breaking boards! Didn't you break another board before that? What happened?

@dci, shhh

@anibalin, i already tried that kext, if you look at that picture.. there are xbench results labeled Jcar (jonnie carcinogen or whatever)

This mobo choice is killing me (DS3L vs P5W)! The primary factors (for me) are the 2 big cons;

Gigabyte: Con:3 Gb max ram ..... Pro: Great reliability/reviews, easy overclock

Asus: Con: Many bad reviews with reliability ...... Pro: Good compatibility

Taking price out of the scenario:

Can anyone say which of these boards is really the better choice?

Sounds to me like the 3Gb "problem" on the DS3L can be solved by enabling AHCI. Where are you hearing of bad reviews on the P5W? It's a well-regarded board (as is the Gigabyte).

i have never seen one bad review for the p5w (ok maybe one) but remember there just stupid people.. if the item is generally getting 5 star reviews, on bad review is a fluke.

They both run equally smooth i think.. but you are gauranteed 4 sata ports with the p5w dh deluxe.. their are 2 ez raid ports which i have not tested but i think they work. Yes the wireless does not work in leopard.. they have not release a leopard kext for it.. but who need wireles. THe IR remote is detected in system profiler as P5W DH Remote.. but doesnt do anything. I have everything working great.. check out this crappy video i made

On newegg it seems like every other review says the Asus board was either DOA or died within the first 6 mos.If the 2 other SATA ports don't work with AHCI enabled, do you know if 3rd party SATA cards will work on the DS3L?I really don't care about differences in price, and would gladly spend $200+ if it meant I could get a really solid compatible system going.Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Right on, thanks Mthoto, maybe I should rethink the ASUS, I suppose. Also, thanks for all the contributions on the board, it has helped me quite a bit.Now I have the "go ask alice" song in my head though, dangit!

There are some bad reviews lately, but overall, about 79% give it 4 to 5 stars. Can't speak about Asus tech support myself. Just so you know, I have both boards, I just haven't taken the Asus out of the box, and I might actually return it given that my Gigabyte board is running very well with the 10.5.2 update. I'm running without AHCI, and I don't plan (for now) to go past the 1st two SATA ports on my board (one is taken by my DVD drive).

Alright.. i Overclock my processor from 2.4 to 3ghz.. it boosted my xbench from 167 to 187. It boosted my openGL from 160 to 192. I am a bit happier now.

both are great boards.. I am just biased towards my only surviving board.

@Chuckeroo.. I used Windows on vmware.. im sure linux will work.. there are options for it.

Overclocking is easy as hell. look, oc from 2.4 to 3.0

1. Any chance of adding the overclocking instructions to the tutorial?

2. Did you say you had been running vmware and it worked pretty well for you? Have you tried any sort of linux on it?

Some light reading. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1198647. It's a really good intro to overclocking Intel processors. I'd suggest you not play with voltages until you at least feel comfortable doing the very basic stuff. Similar stuff for AMD proc's is out there.

Nice, thanks for the link dci! I am a complete beginner at this stuff.

I'm excited to give the overclocking a shot, as I've heard people push the E8400 to 4Ghz.

Here is my list at newegg to be ordered this week. Any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated

as this will be my first computer build ever (apple/mac user since around 1985).

thats looks good. although may i make a suggestion

I switch from the antec p180 case to the antec 900 case. I have regreted it ever since. I sold my antec p180 case so i could not go back

the antec p180 (or p182 or :) is nice a roomy in the inside. It is extremely quiet and it keeps ur stuff cool. I reccomend it over the antec 900.

also. After all that nice hardware, you dont want a better video card.. 8800 perhaps

also just Overclocked my processor

post-110603-1203298655_thumb.png

My xbench went from 167 to 195. Everything benefited. Opengl went from 160 to 210.

Nice, that p182 does look nice, I will def switch it out.

Which 8800 do you think is best for the money? This is a sticky point for me

as I want it to be as "future-proof" as possible, but I am also not a huge gamer these days.

Probably don't want to go over $200.

Thanks for your help!

200 dollars

i would go for this though

240 bucks.. beautiful card, great support in osx. if you want to go cheap on the graphics, id reccomend getting a 7000 series rather than the 8600.. but you should get a second opinion

if you want to save some money, you definately dont need a 150 dollar 700w psu

this would suite you great http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817182017
