Dx86
I've successfully installed Jas10.4.8AMD/SSE3/SSE2, now, on an external USB drive connected to an Inspiron 8600 (NV Fx5200) and now have the answers to a number of questions I asked up thread: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=267597 1) I had better luck installing 10.4.8 clean and migrating a user account from an existing 10.4.6 installation than trying a direct upgrade of 10.4.6. (This may be pilot error. It took me awhile to learn how to edit all the NVD and Geforce kexts to put in the right card number and set the permissions. But my upgrade attempt would only boot in safe mode, while the clean install worked with full QE/CI support) 2) See 1). I removed the MacVidia driver before trying to upgrade 10.4.6, but it still didn't work well. 3) Yes, on an Intel SSE2 CPU, select the 10.4.4 login window package. That's all you need to fix the "About This Mac" problem. I did not experiment with replacing the SMBIOS.KEXT, and don't know whether Jas took care of this in the install packages. 4) No problems with ITunes 7 and Quicktime 7.13. Both included and working, as is the DVD player. 5) [Not in my original message]: I already knew to replace the IONetworkingFamily.Kext with a 10.4.3 or 10.4.4 version. (I didn't have any luck with the one from 10.4.6). It's amazing how many people are still complaining about no networking support, who haven't picked up that you need to do this. Additionally, in order to get the Dell Truemobile 1450 Wireless recognized as Airport Extreme I had to replace the IO80211Family.Kext with an old version. ----------------------- I hope the above will be of some use to people who are still struggling with these issues. Unfortunately, I have other post-install issues that I haven't figured out yet. These are primarily related to inconsistent behavior of the Titan driver. I have read and followed the instructions to remove AGPgart.kext, and entered the Fx5200 ID in all the NV and GeForce kexts. **Hint: if you're still getting the "Must Restart This Machine" error, it may be because there are still some NV kexts that don't have the video card ID correctly. Make sure the IOPCIMatch string is correct in *all* of the NV kexts -- not just the the NV30 or NV40, but also the NV10 and NV20* New Problem 1: I can't get the battery meter to work properly with the patched PowerManagement.bundle. Although the battery meter appears when I boot the install DVD, and it works in 10.4.6, I haven't been able to get it to work in 10.4.8. Question: could the failure of the Battery Meter to load be related to SMBIOS.Kext? Are other people having this problem with the new Jas 10.4.8 AMD/SSE3/SSE2 DVD? New Problem 2 (worse): Even though I managed to get the system to boot successfully to the GUI with full QE/CI, it won't boot successfully every time. I'm still getting black screen boots, intermittantly without making any changes to the NV and Geforce kexts. Sometimes I can boot to safe mode with -x -v and sometimes I get black screen boots then, too. I'm trying to decide whether this is related to erratic performance of the external USB drive that has the 10.4.8 partition. New Problem 3 (the worst): The external USB drive on which I installed 10.4.8 is beginning to behave erratically. It may be that the drive is developing physical problems on its own -- but I have the paranoid suspicion that the erratic performance is related to failed black screen boots of the 10.4.8 partition. I've already written a lengthy description of this problem in another thread titled: "Hard Drive Totally Screwed" http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=271383 The Titan.kext works unpredictably, sometimes yes, sometimes no. After a number of black screen failed boots, I can't even boot into Single User Mode. I have to power the drive down for half an hour and repair it from the Install DVD to get it to the point where it will load the pre-GUI system files again. Then, sometimes the GUI loads and sometimes it doesn't. I've given up several times, erased the partition and reinstalled. (Turning the drive off for ten minutes or so is also necessary to get Windows XP to recognize it again. The drive always behaves normally after a clean install of 10.4.8 until the black screen boots start happening. ) I'm wondering whether there's a separate issue about 10.4.8 and recognition of USB drives that's complicating the erratic behavior of Titan. (I did try Natit in one series of tests and experimented with beta versions of AGPGart.kext -- but this messed everything up every time, forcing me to erase the partition and reinstall from scratch.) Do you add the ppf to your dvd ? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37537-new-jas-dvd-amd-intel-sse2-sse3/page/15/#findComment-272467 Share on other sites

malibusurf
harsha: this iso is around 3gb. its a: too big for rapidshare. b: would take forever to upload, and c: would probably get deleted. do you have usenet access? this release has given me nothing but problems so far, install went smoothly but then the system wouldnt boot giving kernel panics. managed to boot into safe mode using -x but couldnt get to the desktop. titan seemed to be going insane switching between monitors and from blue screen to switching off the monitors im about to patch the DVD now and see how that goes. EDIT: System is DFI SLI-DR (NF4), Athlon64 3000+, 7800GTX, 2GB Ram. installing to 20gb maxtor IDE hdd. 2x 2001fp connected to the 7800gtx Edited January 10, 2007 by malibusurf Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37537-new-jas-dvd-amd-intel-sse2-sse3/page/15/#findComment-272875 Share on other sites
BobOki
Dvd works fine, BEFORE THE PATCH. After that it errors trying to install. Now, without the patch, unlike the 10.4.7 JaS, the 10.4.8 does not recognize my laptops keyboard or mouse. 10.4.7 had no problems at all, saw it instantly and it worked. I have been messing around with the ppf, trying using a few patch programs, including the included ppf-o-matic, and I just cannot get it to install. I tried on three machines now, all fail at around 25-26% or so. I did notice that with the ppf, I now get a error when I start to load on my laptop it saying my laptop is not plugged in, which it is. I also noticed a new addon option in customize for laptops. smajli
In your case it supposed to be, as I type last time : <string>0x004010de& 0x00FE10de;. What I find out is, you don't have to edit GeForce.kext. So after you edit the other thwo kext then you type "chown -R root:wheel /S and hit the tab button, then L+tab, then E+tab +/,then NVDANV4+tab+enter". Now hit the upper arrow, will repeet the same comand, erase the last lethers until you see NVDA, type R and hit the tab+enter. Do the same with "chmod -R 755 /S........Do not forget to do "rm /S+tab, L+tab, E+tab+m+tab. Ihope tis will help you. Please pay attention to the cappital lethers! I get everything above done except for th elast part.....rm /System/Library/Extensions/msdosFS.kext It says it cannont delete because its a directory. m +TAB = msdosFS.kext. Is this part important? I did everything else, restarted and same problem. I reinstalled 10.4.8 dvd without the Titan option and got my video back just to double check my device ID. Than I'll put the DVD back and add Titan install and try again. any sugestions? ultravista
Installed on a Compaq Deskpro P4 2.6 GHZ. After several installations and multiple failures, I realize the boot partition is either missing or corrupt. I've run the disk utilities off the DVD, checked & repaired but the system wont boot the HD. When forcing boot to the HD, the system errors with "/com.apple.boot.plist not found". This is my 4th installation on a second drive. How do I correct this? Kdubz
Hey guys. Do you still need PAE instructions to run this or does the new kernel/patch take care of this I saw that someone on this forum got this to work and they have the same motherboard as me. Pentium M Banias is my board.and it allows MMX, SSE, and SSE2 instructions. Im really hoping this works for me because I've been dying to, I've only been able to install the deadmoo image because of the PAE. tokra128
St0nehead, see on this subforum the patch created by defiant for disk utility .. The error you have is given by the fact that the disk utility was unable to correct set the mbr on your hdd. The fix is simple - using latest jas dvd, + latest jas ppf + defiant ppf. This is 3rd Jas DVD that i`m downloading with my 128kbit internet connection.... and 3rd time i`m crying for lost time ( and traffic, of course ) Probably the same problem I had - you have to enter your video cards PCI ID in a couple of files, and to do that you hve to get into single-user mode (-s), and to do that you have to hit F8 at JUST the right time (hell, I was only able to do that successfully once). The patched 10.4.8 DOES work, but apparently with some tweaking needed on some systems. I see no point in redownloading 4 gigs of the same thing. If anything, just run a CRC check first. But if the install worked, even that is probably a waste of time. dimape
Hey everyone. This version was my first installing it on a pc. I`m used to macintoshes for a while, so I know how much better it is than any other os out there. Well, anyway, I have an Athlon 64 3000+ /FX5200/K8vx-x Asus motherboard/512ddr/80Gb SATA. I burnt jas on a rw dvd, booted, selected almost every package and installed. I was amazed by how simple it was. But I must confess, I really missed install options (archieve and install, erase and install, etc.). After installed, I was amazed/scared by how fast it works! I didn`t expect such a great performance, better than most pmg5 out there. But the audio didn`t work, iCal and usb wasn`t recognized. After a few attempts, audio worked, but only on the left side. I didn`t get to try an usb solution. Then I decided to use software update. After the security update, finder stopped responding, so I had to reinstall. When I reinstalled, I was more careful about the packages I`d install. And the result was amazing. Audio now works fine, USB too. Right now I`m charging my iPod nano! Ok, I know it wasn`t useful my comment, but I`d just like to register how glad I am about the Hackintosh community. You guys are working great to make sure everything works. I hope from now on I can help the community! I have windows vista installed on another partition. It can`t compare to mac os x, even a hacked non-official version! Microsoft should be ashamed! Oh, btw, my iCal still doesn`t work. Anyone got an idea? Tiger K
I have a small problem. My installation finally worked using the Jas DVD with the ppf and now everything is good but now I'm not sure how to make my video card work like it did with 10.4.5. I have a 22" display with 1680x1050 resolution. With 10.4.5, I used Callisto and it worked like a dream, all the resolutions worked and even QE/CI were supported. Now that I have 10.4.8 I don't know what I should use, will Callisto work with this version? Please help. gcodori
quick newb question...for the latest 10.4.8 dvd.... how do you know if you need to use the ppf file on it? Is there a reason to patch the JAS DVD or shouldn't it already be patched? Still unclear why ppf's are needed on a "custom" distro. So now I've downloaded the 10.4.8 intel only dvd, the intel and AMD dvd two days later and today I downloaded the PPF for the intel/amd distro. I burned three DVD for each version. In addition, I have a install disk from my C2D macbook (official disc). Some install guides mention patching the iso's and some don't. Is there a clear explaination about when to use or not use the PPF's? lennyb
Re 353: Thanks for reading my geeky post. Yes, I installed the patched Jas10.4.8AMD/SSE3/SSE2 with the problems described at http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...7537&st=20# (Inspiron 8600 NV go5200 AGP video adapter). Since then, I've been able to get 10.4.8 with Titan to boot properly on a more consistent basis. I removed the extra NVDANVHAL kexts as advised . (My Geforce go5200 uses NVDANVHAL3.KEXT, it doesn't need the other ones.) Unfortunately, even though I now get QE/CI support with Titan, the XBench results are really slow (average 18), so I'd like to try Natit to see if it's any faster. I've had no luck with Natit, so far. I get black screens every time, without changing anything in the other supporting kexts. If I put Titan.kext back in, the machine boots to the desktop again. Is anyone else with a Geforce Fx5200 AGP card able to get Natit to work? (If so, which version of Natit? I've tried Natit_edited.kext and the Natit 1.0 installer package.
