  1. Accused of Cockiness

    Someome call a whaaaaabulance, STAT!
  2. Macbook C2D heat issues

I think her temps average 130F on a daily basis. I don't think I have ever seen 98F on her laptop. Granted - she usually has VMware on 24/7 which could be jacking upo CPU cycles.
  3. My wife's macbook C2D has been having sporadic heat issues...every so often, the processor begins to heat up significantly. I have installed a fan control/temp utility to monitor - and I have seen the CPU get up to 197F and the fan RPM to get up to 6,000+ RPM. I believe this is software related - as I notice in the activity monitor that something (I'm still new to Macs) is taking up nearly 100% of the CPU cycles when this occurs. She constantly runs Vmware Fusion (she still hasn't kicked the XP habbit). Is there an app that monitors CPU usage and can kill a process that becomes a "run-away" and begins to eat CPU cycles? A prior time this occured - the only solution was a reboot (most apps were closed when this occured). I hope to find a solution - as I fear that the excessive heat will kill off her CPU. Thanks!
  4. here's my newegg wishlist...can be even lower if you go with a slower cpu. I don't even need the DVD as I already have a Lite-On USB2 drive. Thoughts/comments? 5. New Imac processor Upgrade?

per the new alum imac service manuals - the CPU, GPU, HDD are all replaceable. Check out www.ifixit.com for photos of an imac take-apart. Note - there are LOTS of cords/wire to remove - you could break a connection.
  6. If you are talking about the ALUM imacs, you CAN upgrade the video card. They are slot mounted but use different heat pipes. You will need to retain your old heat pipe. I looked over both the ALUM 24 inch and 20 inch service manuals - both models use upgradable cards. You can use a 24" card in a 20" model, but would have to use a 20" heat pipe. Look over www.ifixit.com or service manuals for more info.
  7. LAPTOP for OS X 86

The only laptop that is made to work with OSX is a macbook or macbook pro. Anything else is a hack, and you have to weigh how much you are willing to compromise (no sound, no sleep, etc). Time is money, also. For 1K to 2K you can get a real mac and not have to worry if a program will work, hardware is compatible or if an update will kill your system. Apple sells refurb macbooks for $845 and they have a 1 year warranty.
  8. ASrock Conroe945G-DVI

thinking of putting together a osx86 machine with the 945g-dvi using onboard dvi hooked directly up to my HD projection tv. Has anyone used the 945g-dvi add-in card (dvi) on a dvi HDTV? What was the max resolution you have been able to take his board up to? Will it do 480p/720p/1080p and work with OSX? I understand that our hacks don't always result in usable resolutions. I'll use this machine for mostly video playback and capture, plus some browsing. Will the dvi resolution be usable (I'd be happy with 1280x720). Thanks!
  9. The iMac line will get a new look and most likely the santa rosa chips. I dont think it will get anything else major. There will be no 6g ipod - Apple wants people to buy the iphone instead - remember they dont want it to be a phone only, they want it to be an ipod, phone and personal internet appliance. The mac mini is sorely due for an upgrade. At the least it will get a c2d chip for Leopard. Maybe a bump to the x3000 video. Dont think anything else will be added. Remember, apple move SLOWLY. They can do this because people are still buying the products AS IS, and only the die-hards are calling for upgraded models.
  10. check to see if the 8x series GFX card is fully supported - use search function. Most will recommend a 7600GT/GS series card instead. The MB and HD are OK - check for the sound and network patches for the MB.
  11. As the first two posts asked - has anyone had any FIRST HAND experience with either of these two cards. I'd really like to know before getting to the install screen whether a card is supported. And if there were any hints to getting either of them working would be great too. Also, I'm sure sharing this info would benefit the board. Thanks
  12. Second option I am looking at with a low profile format (considering slim case). http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814102032 SAPPHIRE 100167L Radeon X1600PRO 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Low Profile Video Card - Retail This also has DVI that I want - and the wiki mentions a similar card working. I am thinking of pairing this with the conroe 945g-dvi motherboard. Any thoughts? Which installer would support this and is it included in the latest JAS distro of 10.4.8? Thanks
  13. I am looking for a video card for an osx86 install - I am looking for DVI/HDMI as the primary output. This will be used on a big screen, not a vga monitor (yuck). The card I am looking at is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814127201 MSI RX1600PRO-TD256E Radeon X1600PRO 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card With Full Version Game Colin Mcrae Rally - Retail Can anyone confirm that this is the same MSI x1600pro listed in the wiki as being fully working including sleep, etc? And most importantly - working DVI at the highest resolution - it will be used on a 52" projection HDTV. Thanks!
  14. New JaS DVD (AMD, INTEL SSE2, SSE3)

quick newb question...for the latest 10.4.8 dvd.... how do you know if you need to use the ppf file on it? Is there a reason to patch the JAS DVD or shouldn't it already be patched? Still unclear why ppf's are needed on a "custom" distro. So now I've downloaded the 10.4.8 intel only dvd, the intel and AMD dvd two days later and today I downloaded the PPF for the intel/amd distro. I burned three DVD for each version. In addition, I have a install disk from my C2D macbook (official disc). Some install guides mention patching the iso's and some don't. Is there a clear explaination about when to use or not use the PPF's? Thanks
  15. PC inside Xbox 360 case

did you say osx on an xbox? Isn't it limited on memory? OSX on an xbox 360 would be cool, but so far it is locked (unless you trust that rumor that it's been compromised).
