Can you detail the steps you took? My older system is a p35-ds3p and ##### 1.4 failed for me from a thumb drive (system immediately switches to the boot loader on my HDD when I boot from the USB-HDD).

Did you use a fat32 formatted thumb drive? Formatted with?

Boot from usb-hdd using F12 from BIOS?

Selected HDD or usb when you ran Duettohdd?

I prepared my usb-stick in Win7 with the utility iBoot_SetupTool. First you must format the stick with this utility, and then prepare the boot files with the SetupTool. Unplug the thumb drive, replug it. In my system i needed to reboot. Then I rebooted in Snow, deleted all files on the thumb drive, copied the files from ##### 1.4 (efi and Efildr20).

Then tested if it could find my Snow drive by making a reboot, pressing F12, choosing the USB stick in Hard Disks, and then it gave the bootselector.

Then I rebooted normally in Snow. After that, I prepared a spare hard drive with two partitions, Gui. In Snow I mounted the full image, and from there the Base System Image, restored the Base System with Disk Utility to the 2nd partition of that HD. Don't forget to remove the link Packages and to copy the map Packages in the Base System's Installation folder.

Copied my dsdt.aml to the thumb stick, copied fakesmc (version 2.1) to the Base System partition S/L/E, chown and chmod it (important to avoid spinning ball).

Reboot, F12, thumb stick, and there it found the LionBase partition, booted that partition and it went.

Since ##### doesn't "just work" from thumb drives with certain common motherboards, anyone have luck running ##### from a sata drive?

Need to emphasize, that when you boot pressing F12, don't boot as USB-HDD but choose UT163 in section Harddisk from Bootmenu. USB-HDD doesn't work, but you'll find your usb-stick in the section hard disk.

Conflicting instructions...

I did ask about that already and oldnapalm said that USB-HDD is what worked actually.

As for UT163, I don't know what you're tallking about, I guess that's the name of the model of your particular usb-stick.

On my gigabyte h67, booting with F12 does not provide any choices beyond "Hard disk/CDROM/USB-FDD/USB-ZIP/USB-CDROM/UB-HDD/Legacy LAN"

If I initialize the thumb-drive with iBOOT_SetupToolBeta.2.exe, then when I boot with F12 and select USB-HDD I can now get "MBR Start!" to flash on the screen before it goes blank (no cursor, no response to U key).

Just use Chameleon RC5 with netkas' 'boot' file.

Partitioned by Disk Utility.

I created and loaded my stick in Windows (specifically, 7 Ultimate x64) with zero problems (at least with ##### 1.4).

And I finally have Snow and Lion co-existing!

The only minus is that neither has sound (however, the two issues are unrelated to each other).

They are on two partitions of the same drive (with Snow being on the larger of the two).

Both have QE/CI, both have wired networking, and I *can* get wireless in Snow if I need it (factory drivers are usable there).

For some weird reason (Snow only) when I upgraded to a better/faster CPU (from E1200 to E3400), it wrecked compatibility with VoodooHDA (in Snow). HDMI doesn't work in Lion with my current enabler/kext options in Lion (for either graphics or audio).

So I have Windows 7, Snow, and Lion, each on separate drives or partitions (Windows is on its own drive).

The reason *Windows* has sound is that I can use my X-Fi XtremeGamer there (which isn't supported on either Macs or Hacks).

I finally got my NetGear WN311b wifi card to work in OS X Lion with a old IO80211.kext from a installer package and using the AppleAirPortBrcm4311.kext plus the bcm43xx_enabler-1.sh. but my Lion system started to lag real bad after installed the old IO80211.kext and fixed permissions. So I changed couple /System/Library/SystemConfiguration files in Lion with ones from Snow then changed my NetworkInterfaces.plist in L/P/SystemConfiguration in Lion with the one from Snow and everything worked.

My system still lagged but I let do its thing while I went to the store and when i came back it was all straightened out. I even rebooted a couple times to make sure but everything is alright now.

Why is everyone still using #####? Just use chameleon RC5 and netkas' boot file. It takes a couple times to get it to boot but you will find that your system will work much better with chameleon

Firstly, Chameleon method produces a few too many "Double Fault" for lots of people while #####, once set up properly produces consistent result–that is if your MB can support Vanilla install. Secondly, with the latest version 1.4, ##### can boot other OS X of 10.x.x, too.

I read on 1 of the other forums that OS_Ninja will work on Windows boot environment.

But Chameleon can do a few more things rather elegantly.

That's pretty much it.

Right now, Lion is running swimmingly, which is more than I can say about Snow (and no, I'm not saying that Chameleon is the cause), and apparently, upgrading my CPU has shown a quirk in the state of current Snow hacks (went from Celeron E1200 to E3400, changing nothing else).

I haven't tried to use ##### 1.4 (which I have on my stick) to boot Snow (though it can see the Snow partition) on the off chance that Chameleon is *not* the problem.

Right now, in addition to this Firefox window, I have VMware Fusion running Windows 7 Pro x64 in Unity Mode, installing MSE and upgrading to IE9.

True - any Mac that supports Snow or Lion can do this; however, I get a bit tired of some sorts of Mac fanbois looking down their noses, sneering, and say that they wouldn't do such a *cwazy* thing.

The very point that I (and most of the Hack community) are making is that there is a TON of underappreciated (if not just plain UNappreciated) capability and firepower in Snow (and even Lion, as early in the development process as it is). If you're happy underusing what this OS can do, fine. Just don't hobble the rest of us in the process.

1. netkas's boot file is rc3 based not rc5

2. since it's rc3 based, it doesn't include support for my platform - sandy bridge support is only in the anval rc5 branch

3. All information I've read indicated that I needed ##### or the older XPC method in order to install the BaseSystem.dmg, I thought netkas's boot was only for after the install was complete.

Anways, I have been able to get ##### to finally boot on my old p35-ds3p system using F12->Hard disk->enter->select USB disk (go figure) whereas F12->usb-hdd fails.

The same technique with the same thumb drive still fails on my h67 system, regardless of which way it's booted.

Just use Chameleon RC5 with netkas' 'boot' file.

*Maybe* I can fold netkas's and anval's chameleon changes together and then maybe that'd be an option...

bcc9 just make sure the drive is MSDOS based file system, FAT32, and it wont work with GUID.

It should say MBR Start! not GPT Start!

PGHammer it's great that you find it stable, but the state Lion is definitely not stable, if it works for you awsome keep using it. But I definitely can make the desktop crash quite a few times, this tells me that it's very sketchy at the development stage, they have a long way to go. I have ironed over quite a few glitches that it cannot be used for any type of production.

I seem to be having a problem with ##### on my system. It just seems to hang at a black screen with a white cursor in the upper left of the screen; it doesn't seem to do anything beyond that.

I used the ##### setup and format tools for windows on a USB drive formatted as MBR.

Has anyone gotten ##### to work on EVGA's X58 boards yet?

Since creating this thread I was on track to install it. Here is how I have done it. Let me know if you have any trouble with the steps presented here :

Hardware : P5QPro Motherboard

CPU : Core 2 Quad

RAM : 8GB

Graphics Card : MSI HAWK ATI R 5770 Graphics Card

What works

Everything apart from Shutdown and Reboot.

Whats awesome is, My MSI 5770 graphics card now detects all ports and configures it properly without adding any additional kexts. Everything works just out of the box. Another thing is I have been able to use all previous kexts successfully here including Audio, Ethernet, IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector.kext, etc. So keep those handy

Here is How to do it :

1. Preparing #####. (Very important Step).

This is not the ##### based on chameleon (so don't download from Tonymacx86) but something more closer to mac. It is a duet based EFI boot loader. The developer has posted a link at http://osx86.co/f36/new-duet-based-efi-bootloader-t6383/ . It is developed by OS_Ninja. Download the archive on a Windows. I am using Windows because it is easy and it works. The folder includes ##### Setup Tool (Windows). Start the setup tool. Click Format. Remove and Re-Insert the flash Drive then Click Install #####.

2. Boot Snow Leopard and do the following (copying and correcting steps given by blade5502)

Mount 10.7 image

in Terminal:

open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ ESD/BaseSystem.dmg

Restore “Mac OS X Base System” to a partition (diskutility) //You should have 2 free Partitions: 1 for Installation Files ond another for the System should be installed.

Remove “Packages” alias from System/Installation on that partition

in Terminal: sudo cp -R /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ ESD/Packages /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Base\ System/System/Installation

3. Installing fakesmc (very important)

Copy fakesmc.kext to System/Library/Extensions of Mac OS X Base System Installation . Set the proper permissions for next :

$ chown -R 0:0 fakesmc.kext

$ chmod -R 755 fakesmc.kext

4. Boot from the ##### USB drive

Type U to cycle between resolution. Select the Mac OS X Base System Installation Disc,

Install as usual. If you are stuck at colored wheel then fakemc has some problem in loading.

5. Reboot to Snow Leopard

Remove /System/Library/CoreServices/PlatformSupport.plist from Mac OS Lion partition

6. Reboot to Mac OS X Lion (Using ##### USB Disc of course)

Copy all the device specific kexts to System/Library/Extensions . Set the correct permissions (see above) and reboot.

Enjoy. Hopefully now you will have a complete system.

Hi guys,

Part 3 of the installation procedure referred me error messages.

3. Installing fakesmc (very important)

Copy fakesmc.kext to System/Library/Extensions of Mac OS X Base System Installation . Set the proper permissions for next :

$ chown -R 0:0 fakesmc.kext

$ chmod -R 755 fakesmc.kext

Terminal:

mac-pro:~ ...$ sudo su

Password:

sh-3.2# $ chown -R 0:0 fakesmc.kext

sh: $: command not found

sh-3.2# $ chmod -R 755 fakesmc.kext

sh: $: command not found

sh-3.2# chown -R 0:0 fakesmc.kext

chown: fakesmc.kext: No such file or directory

sh-3.2#

Thank you for your help.

chown -R 0:0 + drag and drop(kext from S/L/E)

Edit (internet breakdown... as always here !)

first :log as root ( sudo -s + passwd )

then

cd /Volumes/"name of partition of Lion"/System/library/Extensions

and

chown -R 0:0 + drag and drop(kext from S/L/E)

chmod -R 755 + drag and drop(kext from S/L/E)

I agree 100%. What we need here is more people like you, with newer gear, voice in. Lion is about moving forward. I hear (and experienced it myself) from people with newer ATI cards now can boot up Lion right out the box. I have never seen any first-preview OS that runs this smooth while developers are still trying to adjust to new programming environment. All of the programs on my SL partition run fine in Lion, except that iTunes runs a bit weird. Besides, the improvements in different areas alone makes it worth it to dive in.

I just wish someone with the i7/i5 with built-in Intel GMA report the result. I know I will put on Lion on my next HTPC build with Core i5 2500K.

running Lion on an i7 920,6 GB DDR3,HD 5770,4 TB , using ##### -> internal HDD, wifi, audio, gfx all working. some apps crash but its not a big deal. you can find other apps that work and do the same job. other then that it seems to run fine, I like the evolution of the os.
