Sorry, I know this is Off Topic....but ( ), I have a Windows 7 system and a perfect (AFAIK!) MAC OS X 10.6.3 system using Stell's v3 of course on seperate HD's. What is involved (Other than the search button :P ) in creating a dual boot system using a Single drive and is it reliable once created?

Does anyone that follows this thread run dual boot?

Know that "Search this thread" and "Google" {censored} everyone spews out?

That's the answer here, but I'll do you one better. I posted instructions on how to do it in this thread like 40 pages ago.

See? Easy. Have fun, don't come barking at me if it blows up. :P

BTW, the OSX Bootloader we use is THE best way to select boot options.

Don't go messing with the Windows one to make things selectable, it'll become a huge mess.

Found it. Might try this when I get my SL drive nice and backed up.

Stell,.. gotta say it man,.. I love ya!

I know it's frowned on, but I just installed Win 7 on my Hack on the same drive as

OSX SL, and it's workin like a charm! (Thanks to the v3 installer!)

Couldn't have been easier, I even installed Win AFTER I already had it hacked.

Both boot fine. :-D

I know that 2 separate HDs, one for each is the safest way to do it, but what can I say? I'm cheap.

Not that I should need to say this;

Do this sh** at your own risk!!

Back up your files, system, and DON'T BLAME ME!

For those interested;

You MUST have OSX and Win7 as 2 of the first THREE partitions, or else it doesn't play well.

- I installed SL, then used Disk Utility to to make a 2nd partition (for data) then a 3rd for Windows. (FAT32 with "MBR" selected in options)

- Installed Windows 7 to the 3rd partition (Making it NTFS during install)

From here only Win will boot, until we fix it. ;-)

Your choice, fix it from Windows or Mac. I'd fix it from Windows since it IS running after all!

The First problem is that Windows' partition is marked as "Active" so it will lead the boot.

This section taken from devilhood's Guide to dual-booting!

- Open a shell as administrator.

CODE

DISKPART> list disk

Will show you a list of selectable disks

DISKPART> select disk n

[where n = the disk number]

Select the disk OSX and the newly installed Win7 resides

DISKPART> list partition

This will show you the partitions on your selected disk

DISKPART> select partition n

[where n = the your OSX partition]

This will specify the partition

DISKPART> active

Will make your OS X partition the first-boot active partition

DISKPART> Exit

From here you just need the bootable thumbstick with installer you used to make the hackintosh.

- Boot from the thumbstick.

- Select your Hack to boot from.

- Once booted into SL, back up your /Extra folder and run Stella's installer and point it at your Hack partition.

From here on out Chameleon should take over as boot loader and default to OSX.

Press Esc during the bootloader will let you load Windows by choosing it.

That was it. Windows 7 still boots perfectly fine, and so does OS X! (Withstanding my 10.6.2 HDMI problem lol!)

Thanks Stella!!!!

Cheers folks, I knew you would oblige ;)

Ideally, I would like to split a 500GB drive in two anf have half each and I seem to remember reading that if there is no unpartitioned space on a drive Windows 7 doesn't (Can't) create a 100MB partition for the boot stuff.

I have a spare drive to test all this on so will keep my working drives out of the way until I get my head round it all...

@CoHPhasor, can I have Windows 7 on NTFS and not FAT32?

@CoHPhasor, can I have Windows 7 on NTFS and not FAT32?

Yes - with a caveat.

The bootloader detects the bootable partition, allows you to select it, then allows you to boot it.

As for the caveat? When you create the partition FOR Win from OSX it must be FAT32.

Once the partition is created, you can do your Win install, and that's when you can make it NTFS.

Follow the guide, remember that Win will temporarily muck up your bootloader until you go back in and change it the way described. Have fun

Guys,

In preparation to update my pretty standard Lifehacker setup (v3 installer, running 10.6.2) I'd like to clone my current 1TB HD to another 1TB internal SATA HD so that if something goes wrong I've got a fallback. Are there any special tricks using Carbon Copy Cloner to do this?

Thanks.

CCC is awesome !! it has saved me hundreds of times , specialy before OSX updates etc. I have two drives and use CCC to have a regular backup/boootable clone. Always check "Delete items that don't exist on the source"

I did all that CoHPhaser and all seemed to go well but I don't see the Windows 7 partition as a choice in Chameleon.

I guess I did something wrong...do'h!

If I set either the little 200MB partition or the MAC OS X partition as Active I can boot into Chameleon and then MAC but don't see the Windows 7 partition at all.

If I set the Windows 7 partition as Active it boots straight into Windows 7.

I take it this means everything is installed ok and just needs "tweaking" somewhere?

Fantastic! I was going to ask how to clone Mac drives. I use Aconis True Image to clone my Win 7 machines. It's the first thing I do when I get a new laptop.

It seems as though you installed correctly, and you mention changing the active partition, so it sounds like you followed my post and the one I cited.

I would try backing up your /Extras folder and reinstalling the v3 installer.

Honestly the bootloader is even supposed to give you options for booting a CD/DVD, USB, external drive, etc if you press a button during startup and it works for this too.

It just looks for any attached, bootable device.

Did you use 64bit Windows 7 on yours?

After Mac is installed, if I reboot, in the bootloader I see the empty FAT32 partition created at installation, so far so good.

After I finish the Windows 7 64bit install, it boots directly into Windows as you said. I then mark the first (200MB) partition as active from within Windows and reboot. All I see then in the bootloader are the Mac partition and my three NTFS storage drives.

During the Windows 7 install I delete the FAT32 partiton and let it create its own NTFS one, thats right isn't it?

Chameleon 2.0 rc3 is the bootloader version if I remember right?

If I leave my USB stick (Mac install) in at boot, it also shows up in bootloader...

I'll have to look at my post then my install.

I had 3 partitions:

- Hack

- Data

- Fat32 formatted from Disk Utility (Later turned into Win 7 64-bit)

Did my windows install, did the magic hoo-doo, booted back into Mac side with

my USB stick, then reinstalled my Stella installer. (As Win breaks it)

tada

If you let me know how you first created the partitions etc I will try and recreate your exact setup...

One thing I just remembered, Disk Utility doesn't show the Windows 7 partition as an NTFS drive. I'll take a picture and post it...brb

I assume this is why it doesn't show up. As I said before though, if I make partition 3 active, Windows 7 boots just fine.

In case anyone is interested, this is my Ubuntu on Chameleon Guide!

My setup:

750GB HD for Snow Leopard

320GB HD for Windows

1TB HD, 800GB for Snow Leopard Backup and 200GB for Ubuntu

This will also work for a separate Hard Drive for Ubuntu or on a new Mac OS X installation rather than backup. The same principles still apply.

I followed the Ubuntu on Chameleon guide here:

http://www.dailyblogged.com/booting-ubuntu...eon-bootloader/

The process is very simple and there is basically only one step on the website, but there is a specific order of doing things to make it work (As I learned the hard way) so my guide is a little more in depth. So, here goes nothing.....

1. Boot into OSX. It doesn't matter if it's an existing installation or the install.

2. Navigate to Disk Utility.

3. If installing on Separate Hard Drives, follow A. If installing on the same drive, follow B.

a. Format the OSX Hard Drive to the normal Lifehacker guide Specifications. [Mac OS

Extended (Journaled) with GUID Partition Table. If it isn't already, format the Ubuntu Hard Drive as

Free Space with GUID Partition Table.

b. Partition the Hard Drive as two partitions. Make them any size you want. Format the first as Mac OS

Extended (Journaled) and GUID Partition Table and name it what you want your OSX partition to be

named. Format the second as Free Space with GUID Partition Table and name it what you want you Linux

partition to be named.

4. DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING TO THE OSX PARTITION/HARD DRIVE YET. IF THERE IS AN EXISTING OSX INSTALLATION ON A SEPARATE HARD DRIVE, UNPLUG IT BEFORE PROCEEDING.

5. Boot from your Linux CD and choose install.

6. Follow the normal install steps until you get to the Partitioner. Install Ubuntu on the HD you want and as the longest continued free space.

7. Reboot into Linux. Still do not write anything onto the OSX HD/Partition. Navigate to Terminal in Applications>Accessories.

8. Type "df" without quotations. Hit Enter.

9. If you didn't install with any extra options, the HD or Partition with the Mount Point "/" without quotations should be the first one on the list. This is the one we want. Note the name of the Partition. Mine was called /dev/sda3 and yours should be something similar.

10. Type in ""sudo grub-install /dev/sda3" Replace /dev/sda3 with whatever name your partition is.

11. Type your password. And for those of you that don't know, it will not show when you type it.

12. Wait a second until about 8 lines of text appear below the command telling you that it executed and that it was successful with no errors.

13. Chameleon will now be able to see your Ubuntu Hard Drive/Partition.

14. Install OSX or backup OSX on the other partition/hard drive and you're set!

15. To install Windows, just follow the normal procedure of unplugging all other Hard Drives and then plugging them back in when the Windows install is done.

PLEASE NOTE: This will not work if you are trying to install Ubuntu on the same drive AFTER another OSX installation or backup is put on it. Ubuntu MUST be installed first.

ALSO: This guide will only work for Ubuntu and its derivatives. It will not work with other flavors of Linux.

anyone know if it's possible to charge my iphone through the hackintosh when it's asleep? Mine goes to sleep at night and when I wake up the phone seems like it got drained rather than charged (seriously, like I can go to sleep when it's fully charged, and when I wake up, it's less than 50% charged...).

Hi,

Desperately need help!

I have a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P running vanilla snow leopard 10.6.2

It runs great for a while,

Then locks up or kernel panics at random..

I've checked the console and there was a ton of uuid error: 35's

I've got rid of most of them apart from one last one using various guides and a kext on stell's blog,

Please see the attatched image,

Any help would be AMAZING!

Thanks!

Daniel

Going to have to change my signature, now using Cartri bios insted of Lifehacker install. Same functionallity but only 2 kext and no dsdt.aml.

Imagine if all goals are met change bios install EFI and total vanilla Snow Leopard install from Apple disk.

Go Cartri go. :(

PS: Cut boot time in half. :) Join the alpha test if you have the time and desire to help.

What version of the installer did you use? Are you using the EXACT hardware?

What position are your cards in?

- Why not give us more to work with?

Thanks for biting the bullet. I'm waiting for a formal release. Can you document what you did as far as changing your setup (extensions.mkext, boot.plist) to transition from lifehacker to this new BIOS method?

Keep us up to date on your experience with it.

It was very easy. Install bios using step by step guide. Delete extentions.mkext in extra. Create Extentions folder in Extra and put the 2 needed kext's in it (Cartri has links for good ones, the one for sound that comes with Lifehacker works but dose not put "digital in" as a option.) Run kext utility to create new mkext.extentions in Extra. Add EFI string for video card to com.apple.Boot.plist. Oh yea delete dsdt.aml in extra. Change chameleon bootloader to RC4. Reboot and make sure everything works.

I do have two problems and don't know if the Bios has anything to do with them or not. In SL 10.6.3 I can't seem to calibrate my monitor either by had or using Spyder2 pro. Could be I didn't inject video card string properly, but after doing it resolution options came back and all other video issues were fixed, before adding string no movies or dvd playback and studdering video, after adding string smooth as silk and normal video playback.

My other problem is in Windows 7 Sleep is not working. Screen blinks and nothing else. If set to log in after sleep goes strait to log-in ?

i've got the lifehacker build exactly - except i had trouble on my first build (newb issues or bad parts, not sure) and RMA'ed my mobo. just got it back and reassembled everything.

installed 10.6 on one internal drive, ran the stella v3 installer pointed to my HD.

things seems to be ok so far (after 5 minutes of use), except that on startup i get a message from chameleon that says "unable to locate smbios". there's no error messages in console so it seems to be restricted to chameleon but i want to make sure this won't be a problem.

my smbios.plist is where it should be (/Extra), and i'm guessing this error message is due to the fact that the mobo is now running on the newer FE bios instead of FB.

does anyone know how to fix this error or is this something i should be worried about?

(looking fwd to the Catri bios, feel like i'm too much of a newb to alpha test, but i'm learning...)

Just found out for those of you using Ubuntu that when you update you may have to repeat the sudo command. This is only if it updates the Grub installer. Not that big of a deal.

EDIT: You will also need to disconnect the SL drive. If SL and Ubuntu are on the same drive you will need a boot disc such as Kakewalk's Found Here:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=195248

Which is what I used. Or, you can use the Installation Flash drive if you still have it.

What RAM are you using? In my system I installed DDR2 1066 RAM, however, because of timing issues I eventually found that under-clocking my RAM to 800Mhz was necessary to make my system stable (that and making sure I had the RAM voltage set correctly).

Apparently the UD3P has some issues with higher speeds of RAM. The recent FE bios update (for board rev 1.6) which supposedly addressed memory compatibility may have corrected the issue, but I haven't bother to check as of yet.

And I doubt I will until the issue I'm having with my USB keyboard and mouse is resolved. I've described it in an earlier post, but they're failing to respond after reboot until I log in remotely with LogMeIn and play around a bit. The time varies, but eventually they just start working. Needless to say, it's frustrating. Fortunately, I don't need to boot into Windows often and my computer is stable enough, that I rarely have to restart it. (I've tried everything I can think of from clearing/rebuilding caches to resetting the CMOS. The fact that the problems persists on my 10.6 installer flash drive while Win7 has no issue is also confusing. It also makes it impossible to try a clean install.)

Disable "Quick Boot" in your BIOS and that error will go away.

thanks, that worked like a charm.

i wish that was the only thing that was keeping me from enjoying my Hack, but now the system is KP'ing 2 seconds after opening into the finder...I'm getting KP messages. (direct links to pics below)

can anyone help me decipher what's going on?
