System:

EP45-UD3R

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

4GB Ram

Graphics: Palit/XpertVision GeForce 9600 GT Sonic+ (2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort)

- Retail install with Stellarola v3 Package

- Updated to 10.6.2 some weeks ago (no problems)

- Update to 10.6.3 today (alomost no problems)

Updated to 10.6.3 with almost no problems:

Only downside is that now my 9600 GT (connected via HDMI) sends an garbage HDMI sound signal which makes my monitor switch from analog input sound to hdmi sound and i can only hear a buzzing sound.

It a common thing even under windows. If you dont install the hdmi sound driver in windows there may be coming {censored} through hdmi audio instead of a clean "no sound" signal.

Any ideas on this? With 10.6.2 i did not have this problem.

With 10.6.2 my monitor recognized correctly, that there is no hdmi audio. (which is what i want since i use analog sound output of the sound card)

Thanks for any help :)

Greetings

HDMI has known issues. As far as I know, there are no fixes. You are going to have to use DVI. :/

Thanks for your reply.

Yeah, i read that hdmi audio is no topic by now, but in my case the "only" problem seems that since 10.6.3 the hdmi signal is missing the clean "no audio" signal.

- 10.6.0 (hdmi video signal perfect - no hdmi sound (correct) - no hdmi audio {censored} signal)

- 10.6.2 (hdmi video signal perfect - no hdmi sound (correct) - no hdmi audio {censored} signal)

- 10.6.3 (hdmi video signal perfect - no hdmi sound (correct) - BUT hdmi audio {censored} signal)

I guess i will get another hdmi->dvi adapter and do it like this:

-> 9600gt -> hdmi out

-> hdmi2dvi adapter (to filter out the hdmi audio {censored} signal)

-> going into the display via dvi input

Don´t want to use a dvi cable since they are so thick and heavy and barely fit into my display because of the weird display stand :)

Any other thoughts?

Thanks again.

whatever works...

going back to the heat issue, i noticed that if i put my computer to sleep, when it wakes up it's about 5C cooler. Not just at wake up, through out use until I restart. Just fyi.

How long did you put it to sleep for? Because when I actually push the Apple logo and press sleep the computer acts like its been turned off (no fans or anything) as opposed to when it falls asleep the screen just turns off. If you leave it in force sleep, which is more like hibernate, for a while then yes-temps are going to be lower. The CPU is inactive. When I put it to sleep and then turn it right back on, no differences in temps.

Thanks for your reply.

We understand that, and you want something undesirable to not happen during an update because it's what you want; Apple can't/doesn't account for what everyone wants.

I worked with Stella for hours when .6.2 hit because my HDMI stopped working ALTOGETHER. (Black screen, CPU maxes, windows server hangs)

Point is that if Apple changes how their graphics drivers/hardware interacts it can break something. (And they did)

I wanted to use mine for Maya, but .0 and .1 would not display shaders properly and the graph editor would wonk out. (GE still wonks, even on my MBP on Tiger)

.2 Fixed the problems with Maya (and broke HDMI for some of us) and now .3 broke Maya AGAIN.

See the trend? Experiment for us, it'll help.

backinmac, like i said, it remains cool, not just cool at first because it was off and inactive. I tried it right after turning it on and woke it up right after it fell alseep...temps were about 5C lower and still are. For example, when I turned the computer on this afternoon, the temp was idling at about 55C. After a couple of hours, I forced it to sleep and then woke it up and the temps dropped. At the moment, it's at 47C.

My build is identical to the lifehacker build. In 10.6.2, my HDMI>DVI cable to my HDTV (Plasma LG) worked perfectly fine (no alterations to any kexts to make it work). After the 10.6.3 update, I boot into OSX fine but I get a blank screen on my TV.. DVI>VGA adapter to a normal computer monitor works fine. Any ways to fix this? Thanks

Well, if you look two posts above, you would see that another person had the same problem. OSX doesn't have support for HDMI, and no, there are no fixes.

You just answered the question/scenario I mentioned.

Mine worked fine DVI>HDMI monitor on 6.0/6.1 and 6.2 came along and blammo!

No more HDMI to monitor or HDTV. VGA works fine.

Others didn't have the problem, maybe because my monitor can do HDMI sound?

Who knows. Point is, Apple changed something about how they interact with DVI and our monitors don't like it.

Sorry, that cookie has crumbled for us. :-\

Can anyone recommend a really quiet CPU cooler for this build? I am using a Zalman flower and it's really loud. This build is for my wife and she complains all the time about the noise.

Also I have upgraded an 8800GTS in my Windows desktop to a HD5750. If I put the 8800GTS into this mac will I need to install any kexts to get it working? Would there be much improvement over the Geforce 7600GT currently in there? I suppose it would allow me to switch back to 64bit.

You would not need any kexts. The 8800 GTS should just work. You are also correct about being able to use the 64bit kernel. It is also more powerful so when more things take advantage of OpenCL, you'd be more in business.

I have the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler & XIGMATEK ACK-I7361 Bracket Set and find it to be pretty good. I don't know how it compares to what you have. Are you sure the noise is coming from the cooler?

I would really try and source the noise before buying anything.

I have gotten my build fully functional and running on 10.6.2 (my build is identical to the lifehacker setup). There is one thing that is not working for me, and that is sleep. The hack goes INTO sleep perfectly, but when I go to wake it up, all of the fans spin up and it sounds normal but it only does this for about 5 seconds (no video shows up on the monitor though), at which time it will seemingly go back to sleep. A couple of seconds later, the cycle repeats. I have to force shut down the computer at this point. Any idea why this happens?

Are you running v3 of the installer?

I know that sleepenabler kext was causing KPs in .6.2 with v2 so it was removed.

I use also 2 PATA hard drives so here is the kext working, no matter the amount of RAM.

My install is with Lifehacker 10.6.3 with Stellarola V3 update:

I just installed the Jmicron kext. Did not even require restart. The HDD's just came ON.

Download JMicron kext here:

I'm having a really weird problem and I wonder if anyone has a clue as to what's going on for me?

Earlier today I booted into Win7 (on a separate hard drive), installed an app and updated my Nvidia drivers. I then shut the macihne down. A couple of hours later I got back and tried to boot into MacOS. Booting seemed to work fine, however, while I could move the mouse on screen, the computer acted as if it was locked up and was receiving no input from either mouse or keyboard (with the exception of the mouse movement). However, what's really weird is that I could log in via LogMeIn.com and control the machine remotely just fine, without any problems.

Does anyone have an idea as to the problem or how I might fix it?

It's seems increasingly likely that this is some type of hardware issue. I've been trying other things, including booting from my SL Install Flash Drive, however, the installer does not respond to keyboard or mouse input either.

I'm really at a loss here. Help please?

Have you tried....... other... input methods?

Other USB ports if it's USB keyboard? PS/2 keyboard and mouse?

Others have complained about some ports failing to work, even in the last few pages.

I tried the front ports. But that had no effect. Also, I don't think it's an issue of the ports failing since the mouse does respond to movement, and both peripherals work fine when I'm booted into Windows 7.

even if they work in windows 7, they could still fail (well, not fail really, but simply not respond in OSX the way they should). Try moving to different ones. On my computer, the back ports won't respond until an OS is booted, which means I have to connect the keyboard to the front if I want to get into the bios.

Random question: I don't know much about hardware, not the finer points at least. Just wondering, how does this setup stack up as a gaming rig (exact lifehacker setup)? Not to revive a silly meme, but will it run crysis? haha.
