At around 7:05 PM(GMT -8:00) Nullriver officially released the latest version of Installer.app. This version doesn't include many major changes, but here are the big ones:
-When upgrading Installer, it checks if at least 512KB is free
-Proper Keyboard when adding new sources (so it isn't mucky anymore)
-Automatic refresh every 12 hours instead of 24 hours

Ok, well maybe it wasn't that big, but it's official now. Yay!

BTW, I am sure I am the first one to post this anywhere.

EDGE is Down for the Count

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

Today, it appears that all devices that are using EDGE technology in the mid-east of the US might not be working for quite a while...until February 5th. It seems that the servers that control at&t's edge network are out, meaning that no EDGE will work. This seems to affect users from Chicago to Kansas, a strange area if I do say so myself. Again, at&t said that EDGE service might be out until February 5th at the latest. If you are affected by this, let us know!

    Apple posts "Find Out How"

    By Colonel, in OSx86,

As if OS X weren't easy enough to learn and use, Apple has added a whole new section to their site dubbed "Find Out How". The section adds quite a large selection of video teaching users how to run Windows on a Mac, create a site with iWeb, using iMovie, and more. Go check it out!

    Better O2 iPhone Package

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

Yesterday, O2 announced that they were increasing the amount of minutes that the iPhone users in the UK got. The rates are substantially lower, and show that Apple and O2 do want more users to buy an iPhone.

    Apple posts iWork updates

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

Today, Apple posted new versions of all it's iWork applications, Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. The updates are available through software update and aren't really specific on what they fix. For Pages and Numbers it says "This update addresses compatibility with Mac OS X." For Keynote it says "This update primarily addresses performance issues while playing or exporting presentations." Each update is about 30MB, give or take a few.

The update is available through software update.

It is reported that the new Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac has a pretty bad bug. One that sets the permissions on a lot of files to not the user that installed it or the Admin, but the second user created on said computer. That means that this user could modify or alter any of the files in some folders. Worst of all, it seems that they are blaming Apple's package installer for this, because it is the first time they used it for an install. Even though all the other 1000s of apps that use Apple's package installer aren't messed up as well. Maybe MacBU needs to remember Office for Mac 2008 isn't the only Mac software available...

    1.1.3 Jailbroken!

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

Sorry for not picking up on this yesterday, I was trying to get it to work myself . But really, this works, and I am amazed. It's pretty simple actually, all you have to do is run a unix executable and follow the steps. Then install something on Installer, wait, and BAM 1.1.3 Jailbroken. Here are the full instructions:

    - Start with a 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 jailbroken phone with Installer.app installed AND AT LEAST 300mb OF FREE SPACE.
    - Plug in your phone via USB to your computer.
    - Download, extract, and run "Run_This".
    - it will determine what firmware you are running on your phone and make sure you can run the update.
    - it will then guide you through the process of obtaining and modifying the 1.1.3 firmware (make sure to read everything thoroughly).
    - it will upload the new firmware image to your phone. Note that this only puts the file on your phone and does not modify it at all, yet.
    - When it finishes (should take about 10 minutes), it will tell you to go to Installer and install the "1.1.3 soft upgrade" package. Do that.
    - The upgrade will stall at about halfway. THIS IS NORMAL. DO NOT INTERACT WITH YOUR PHONE WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING. Just leave it plugged in and leave it alone.
    - When the installer finishes (this should take another 10-15 20-25 minutes), your phone should reboot with a fresh activated 1.1.3 firmware.

As you can see here, I have a web app with the little "X" on the top with two other apps, NES and Installer. Also to be noted: the new firmware doesn't work with some of the apps, so you have to wait for developers to update them.

There is really no interesting news today, beside Apple stock dropping horribly, and I don't want to write about that. So here are a few things about the 1.1.3 update for the iPhone and the iPod touch. There are a few interesting changes in 1.1.3 that make it possible for iTunes to install official applications on it without an update. This is because the user of the phone is no longer root, but 'mobile.' There are no official applications out yet, but it can explain why the "iPod touch Upgrade Package" could actually be installed. But this is bad for third party apps, for most store their preferences in /var/root/Library/Preferences. That means that most third party applications will have to be edited. Also, SpringBoard has been rewritten so that it doesn't have to be relaunched to show new applications in /Applications. Another interesting tidbit is that it appears to have widget support. Not much more is known about that at this time.

This one is pretty cool. You can now add speed dial icons on the home screen. Depending on the way you want to do it you can have a pretty icon or not. If you want the pretty icon, all you have to do is enter "number.tel.qlnk.net," press cancel and then add to home screen. You will have a pretty icon and whenever you press it it will ask you if you want to call said number. If you don't want to go through a 3rd party server, press add bookmark and enter "tel://number" as the address. This cannot be added to the home screen.

    10.5.2 Due Soon

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

Developers were just seeded a new build of Mac OS X Leopard, 9C20. The update includes many fixes, and it seems that Apple is supposed to release it as soon as Friday. The update is said to weigh in at over 400MB, which is much more than previously reported. What's also interesting is that it appears that Apple took the graphics drivers and put them in another update that will be available after you install the 10.5.2 update. Leopard Graphics Update is what it is called, and I'm sure you can install it via Pacifist. The update is supposed to include many bug fixes, but there are a few main features that are supposed to be included.
    - DVD/CD Sharing (Probably for MacBook Air)
    - Optional translucent menu bar:

    - List view in Stacks:

Today, Apple released their Q1 Revenue for 2008, and calender quarter 4 for 2007. It was the best year for Apple yet. They posted revenue of $9.8 billion, and a net profit of almost $1.6 billion. Which is much more than the $7.1 billion and a net profit net of $1 billion.
    - 2,319,000 Macs shipped (44% growth and 47%)
    - 22,121,000 iPods shipped (5% growth)
    - 2,315,000 iPhone sold
While this is great for Apple, it does fall short of some of the predictions that some analysts were making, but it is above what Apple predicted for itself. Another interesting note is that they say the MacBook Air orders have been "strong" but it is too early to see how much it will affect the other notebooks they carry. Despite this news, Apple stock has fallen $5.72 today, down to $155.64.
