    Greedy Fascist Hackers...

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

    The iPhone Dev team seems to have been bought out, for everything that they have done, as seen by this message on their front page:

    This is very sad for all of us that were awaiting the release of the Pwnage tool that was supposed to allow unsigned code to run on the iPhone, allowing for custom images to be loaded on to the iPhone. That would mean that pre-jailbroken and pre-unlocked images and even a custom OS could be loaded on the iPhone. Do you think this is real or a April Fool's day joke? Tell us here.

    EDIT: They said they are going offline until April 2nd. Ignore this story.

    Thread at Zephyroth's forums
    As posted by our own Puttabong, a new 9.2.2 kernel and system.kext have appeared on irc.osx86.hu :

    This kext and kernel were made by Team of Hackintosh, or ToH. This release is universal. This kernel is working fine for me and many others.
    Known Bugs: Some users are reporting kernel panics on reboot, so as always be sure to have everything backed up. Regardless of your CPU, system profiler shows cores as 1 while both cores still work and are shown in activity monitor.

    ~pcwiz, well known for his many contributions to the OSx86 Project (such as his recent kernel installer) has released Leo4VMware, which evidently allows the installation of Mac OS 10.5 as a Virtual Machine. This release comes just two days after ~pcwiz successfully installed OS 10.5 in VMware. This release is also confirmed to be working inside of VMware fusion (~pcwiz beat apple to it ).

    Finally, prepare for more update woes (unless you're lucky enough to have a vanilla install ) because Appleinsider reports that Apple has begun testing Mac OS 10.5.3 .

    Today Apple has released Security Update 2008-002 v1.1 for Mac OS 10.5.2 users. From Apple:

    A quick look at the update through pacifist reveals that it is perfectly safe for any hackintosh or macintosh alike.

    After installing, AMD users should scan and patch:
    '/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks' with Marvin's AMD Utility because of changes the update makes to 'Networkconfig.framework/Versions/A/'.

    In other, mildly recent OSx86 news, eddie11c's Leo4allv2 was released March 23rd in the form of a PPF patch for existing .ISOs and as a standalone .ISO.
    This release is unique to the OSx86 world because it is compatible with both AMD and Intel systems: universal if you will .

    Official Leo4all Wiki.

    Finally, it appears that testing has begun on a new 'version 2' of JaS's work-in-progress 'OSx86 10.5.2 Intel SSE2 SSE3' release. JaS has contributed a great amount to the OSx86 community, and many of us have fond memories of his excellent Tiger releases. The official thread for this release can be found here.

    March 27th Update:
    Wiki Team member ~pcwiz has succeeded in running OS 10.5 in VMWare!

    ~pcwiz's thread can be found here. Great work !

    Yes, you heard it right; brand spanking new screenshots from the upcoming iPhone 2.0 Firmware (labeled version 1.2). The extensive gallery is courtesy of BoyGeniusReport with a few screenshots of the not-yet-functional iTunes Application Store, the Lunar Lander game (a sample game provided by Apple for developers to demonstrate various iPhone specific features, such as the accelerometers) shown below, along with some general screenshots of the new calculator, Exchange server setup, and parental controls.

    Currently Apple maintains they will be officially launching the iPhone 2.0 with the iTunes Applications Store in late June. Keep your eyes peeled.

    You read that title right, our favorite OS just turned 7 over this weekend. Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah was released on March 21st way back in 2001, and even though it was extremely buggy and slow, we still use it's release date as the official release date of Mac OS X. There have been 6 (or 7 if you include the Public Beta, which I guess we shouldn't because it isn't September 13th) versions of Mac OS X starting with Cheetah going all the way to Leopard. What was your first version of Mac OS X (I'll guess Tiger 10.4.3 )?

    Here are all the versions complete with code names, release dates, and numbers.
    * Mac OS X Public Beta (September 13, 2000)
    * Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah (March 21, 2001)
    * Mac OS X 10.1 Puma (September 25, 2001)
    * Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar (August 23, 2002)
    * Mac OS X 10.3 Panther (October 24, 2003)
    * Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (April 29, 2005)
    * Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (October 26, 2007)

    When we all updated our computers to 10.5.2, that update we were all waiting for, something terrible happened. The translucent menus that we once used to enjoy went away, we only heard of them when old parents told their kids about the "old times." But no more! Someone over at MacRumors has discovered that if you replace some of the files in your System folder, you can actually bring the translucent menus back to all your apps.

    Below is a "pics or it didn't happen moment." The link to the guide is below that. Warning: the guide requires you to use Terminal to set permissions, but I'm sure you can use an app like Fugu to edit the permissions without Terminal.
    Thanks Carbon!

    Today Apple released a new Time Machine and Airport update:

    A quick look at the update through pacifist reveals that it installs a new mach_kernel and system.kext, which will break most OSx86 installs. This update of course works fine on legit Macs and should be alright for people with near vanilla installs.

    If you wish to install this update, be sure to back up mach_kernel and system.kext. It's best to replace the kernel and system.kext prior to rebooting, but if you forget you can always do it after through -s or another OS. AMD users should patch cpuid's with marvin's utility post-installation.
    Edit: Actually it looks like even that may not fix things. If you're using a hacked kernel take caution and be sure to read other people's experiences.

    In other OSX86 news, Netkas.org has released a new AppleSMBIOS.kext.

    This new kext fixes a bug that some applications including the game 'Second Life' would encounter.

    Safari 3.1 Released!

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

    Today, Apple updated the web browser that comes standard on all Macs: Safari. Yes, it's true, Safari has been updated to 3.1, which has been available to developers for a long time. In addition to Web Standards improvements, this updated how well this browser functioned on Windows...which has been a complaint since it was released.

    Adds support for CSS 3 web fonts
    Adds support for CSS transforms and transitions
    Adds support for HTML 5 <video> and <audio> elements
    Adds support for offline storage for Web applications in SQL databases
    Double clicking on the Tab Bar opens new tab

    And much more! For a full list of updates and changes, including those made to Windows versions, click here. The update is 39MB in size and requires a restart.

    We've had it with all these crappy 30 second videos and pictures of the new firmware! We want something new, and after King Chronic said "enough" to Google Video, he decided that torrenting was the correct method to download the admittedly large 1.2GB 6 minute video. The video highlights many of the features that aren't showed off in either of the two other videos.

    He shows of a lot of the new features that are included in the new Preferences.app, shows the new Calculator buttons, Parental Controls, Microsoft Exchange, and more. I'm probably missing something, but you can download the video and find out what those things are. Once everyone is done downloading, there will be more than one seeder.

    Some say the iPod is the next generation of portable music especially with the new iPod touch; this following report really shows us that the Apple iPod is a space age technology so to speak.

    Recent hi-res photographs of the Space Shuttle Endeavour, which is currently circling the planet at this moment in low-earth orbit, docked to the International Space Station has an interesting focal point for Apple lovers.

    If you look closely you can spot an iPod through the crew cabin window (see image below). Now this is not the first time an iPod has been hurtled into space nor is the first picture of an iPod in space, but it is definitely one of the coolest pictures yet. If you take a look at the hi-res photograph you will know exactly what I mean!

    iPod in Space Fun Facts

    • The traditional lithium batteries have to be replaced with specially certified alkaline batteries. (I wonder what the battery life is like?)
    • The iPod cannot be brought on board the Space Station, as it has not been certified as safe in that environment.
    • No the iPod touch does not get wireless up there.
