    WWDC 2008 Rumor Roundup

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

The annual World Wide Developer Conference starts tomorrow at 10:00AM(-8:00GMT) with a keynote from Steve Jobs. We don't know exactly what they are going to announce, but, as usual, there are a bunch of rumors to choose from.

    iPhone/iPod touch/2.0
There have been rumors swirling around the 3G iPhone since December, and the general consensus is that it will, in fact, be released tomorrow. But wait, will it be thinner? Will it be thicker? Does it have GPS? Does it have a front-facing video camera? Does it ship with 2.0? Does it have a removable battery? Does it have a non-recessed headphone jack? Is it made of plastic? Does it have more than one color? Will it be cheaper? Who knows, but we'll find out on Monday.

    Mac OS X 10.6
A few sources have pointed out that Apple is planning on shipping the next version of OS X, 10.6, in January of 2009. Sources also say that developers will be given a preliminary version on Monday to test. It is said that this version will not contain many new features, but will mostly be a release that fixes problems/makes the computer faster.

    .Mac/MobileMe
It first started with rumors saying that Apple has purchased me.com for their use of the new .Mac service. TUAW said that .Mac would get a complete revamp, with over the air-syncing and many more enhancements. Strings that included "MobileMe" were found in the iPhone SDK, their website, and OS X 10.5.3.

    Live Coverage
I would say that MacRumorsLive has the best live coverage, but that's just my opinion

So what do you think? Tell us in this thread!

10.5.3 is finally available as a downloadable update. The update itself weighs in at a hefty 420MB. As with most Apple updates, it wasn't very descriptive, stating only:

As with all updates, DON'T INSTALL, unless you have a vanilla kernel, or until some more testing has been done. There aren't many visual changes with this update, but now you have the opinion to backup or not when you are on a laptop with Time Machine.

Here are all the General fixes, all the others can be found in the read link at the bottom of the article.

-Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras
-Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices
-Improves 802.1X (Wifi) behavior and reliability and when using Time Machine
-Includes fixes for Time Machine compatibility with Time Capsule
-Fixes a font issue that could result in Helvetica Narrow being used in applications instead of Helvetica.
-Resolves stability issues with Word of the Day, iTunes Artwork, and Slideshow screen savers.
-Fixes an issue in which certain attached hard drives may not show up in the Finder.
-Addresses an issue with .Mac syncing of Dashboard widgets over multiple Macs that use different screen resolutions.
-Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras.
-Improves the accuracy of the Software Update progress bar indicator.
-Addresses an issue in which Finder may not be available if the computer name is blank in Sharing preferences.

    All Fixes

You were probably expecting this: Gizmodo reports today that "someone very, very close to the 3G iPhone launch has told me that Apple will announce their new model at the WWDC Keynote on June 9th." The 2nd generation iPhone will come in glossy black and gain A-GPS technology via a Broadcom chipset.

I suppose it's time to save up to get in on the hype (for me, part of it is selling my copy of Vista Ultimate ).

EDIT: To clarify, A-GPS stands for assisted GPS, and is widely used in many cell phones today. Typically, A-GPS uses a combination of GPS satellites and cellular triangulation to determine the user's location quickly and accurately. However, there are various drawbacks, including poorer signal reception due to the GPS side of the system being less robust, and possibly longer initialization times.

This (especially once finalized) is huge for AMD users, as patching CPUIDs with updates and not applying updates because of new kernels and system.kext's is a huge pain. As stated by Zephyroth, anyone interested should be wary of using this on their primary partition, as it is a beta.

Not a rumor, reported today by CBC. The day has come (sorta)!

Good news for all Canadians, including myself. Rogers Communications Inc. said Tuesday it has reached an agreement to bring Apple Inc.'s iPhone to Canada later this year.

But the company declined to give pricing details or say when it would begin offering the popular mobile handset, which has drawn praise for its sleek design and internet capabilities since it was first launched a year ago in the United States. Earlier this week, Apple said it expected to sell 10 million iPhones worldwide this year.

"We're thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year," said president Ted Rogers in a brief statement. "We can't tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned."

Rogers has long been rumoured to be the wireless carrier most likely to offer the iPhone in Canada, as it is the only Canadian carrier using the GSM (Global System Mobile) communications standard needed to run the iPhone. Canada's two other main cellphone providers, Bell Canada and Telus, use the competing CDMA standard.

But both Rogers and Apple had been tight-lipped about a possible Canadian release date. There has been speculation that part of the delay in bringing the iPhone to Canada was a dispute over pricing between Apple and Rogers. Apple has also been involved in a year-long trademark dispute with Toronto-based Comwave Telecom Inc. over the rights to the name "iPhone."

There are thousands of iPhones already in Canada, but most of these have been bought in the United States and unlocked to work on Rogers's network.

The iPhone, which earlier this year added a number of features designed to make it more business friendly, is expected to compete with Waterloo, Ont.-based Research in Motion Ltd.'s line of Blackberry smart phones.

Well perhaps for all of us Canadians with outrageous cell-phone bills, especially us blackberry users (myself included) will receive some better options once the iPhone hits the market.

I live in Waterloo, Ont. – and reportedly Research In Motion have responded stating they do not feel threatened by the recent news regardless of Apple Inc.’s updated business-friendly iPhone.

    The Hackintosh: Delivered

    By REVENGE, in OSx86,

On April 16, Gizmodo published an article reporting that Psystar Corporation was a hoax! So it's rather ironic that one of the first people in the world to be delivered the Commercial Hackint0sh Open Computer is Gizmodo member Patrick, username: WhiskeyFrown. According to Patrick, who ordered his Open Computer on April 10:

"I used this machine all day today at work without a hiccup. So far everything is working perfectly (something I can't say about my G5 it's replacing) Photoshop, Firefox, VMware Fusion (I know…ironic) as well as the OS itself all performed as expected"
Patrick's Open Computer configuration consists of an Intel Core2Duo at 2.66 GHz, 4 GB of DDR2 RAM, and a GeForce 8600 GT; the machine is reputed to score 3585 on Geekbench. Patrick claims that Psystar's customer service was very good, giving him 3 phone calls to:

    1. to let me know it had shipped.
    2. to let me know UPS got it here a day early and it was on the truck for delivery.
    3. to follow up and make sure I got everything and was happy with the machine.
Patrick's video has made frontpage on Gizmodo, proving that Psystar has delivered, if only one, Open Computer out into the world.

InsanelyMac users, have you ordered an Open Computer from Psystar Corporation? Do you believe 3rd parties should be able to commercialize the work of Hackint0sh and the OSx86 Project?

    Sources: theINQUIRER, SlashGear, Gizmodo

Update: Gizmodo has a gallery of images depicting the Open Computer, including an view of the internals.

In addition, InsanelyMac member Stravaganza has created a list of what he concludes to be the components used in this build of the Open Computer, along with evidence to support his claims and a price estimate based on NewEgg.com inventory:

Okay, so I did some research and here it comes. The machine shown in Gizmodo seems to consist of the following components (my best guess). Refer this video if needed.
Case ASUS TM-250 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811173013 No argument.
Motherboard Gigabyte G31M-S2L http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128078 It's a Gigabyte. It's a G31M-S2L with BIOS version F3 (video, 0:47 left). If you think that since this is an Open Computer, it should have an Intel GMA 950 onboard, then watch the video carefully when the time is 1:31 left. The video cable came out of the PCIe slot location, not the back panel. The machine has its own video card, which means it doesn't need to depend on onboard video.
Processor Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115029 Psystar offers either E4500 or E6750. The video shows E6750 when the time is 0:47 left.
Video eVGA 512-P2-N756-TR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130292 While Psystar video card upgrade option is nVidia 8600GT 256MB, this picture shows 512MB, which was the biggest mystery to me. I know it's an eVGA. It turns out that there's an eVGA 8600GT with DDR2 512MB, which is cheaper than an eVGA 8600GT with DDR3 256MB. If you look at this and this pictures, you don't see SLI interface at the top of the card. Take a look at the pictures of the linked video card. It doesn't have SLI interface at the top either. Yes, they don't give a rat's ass about "open anything"; they are in for money. Feckers.
Hard Hitachi HDP725025GLA380 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822145211 The video shows Hitachi HDP725025GLA380 at 0:43 left. The size is 250GB and its S.M.A.R.T. capability is disabled (video, 0:41 left).
    Optical Lite-On LH-20A1L-05 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827106073 It's LH-20A1L (video, 0:43 left). It's either LH-20A1L-05 or LH-20A1L-06.
Memory GeIL GX24GB6400DCKA http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820144064 (This is the only pure guess work.) It's 2x 2GB because the memory posts 4GB (video, 0:47 left) and because this picture shows the motherboard has only two banks filled with two memory module with silver heat speader. The linked memory module is 2x 2GB with silver heat spreader.
Leopard Mac OS X 10.5 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16832110033 This is a Mac OS X retail DVD package.
    So: Case: $69.83 = ( $54.99 item + $14.84 shipping)
    Motherbaord: $66.99 = ( $66.99 item + $0.00 shipping)
    Processor: $179.99 = ($179.99 item + $0.00 shipping)
    Video: $71.99 = ( $79.99 item + $7.00 shipping - $15.00 rebate)
    Hard: $68.28 = ( $61.99 item + $6.29 shipping)
    Optical: $29.99 = ( $29.99 item + $0.00 shipping)
    Memory: $69.98 = ( $78.99 item + $5.99 shipping - $15.00 rebate)
    Leopard: $109.99 = ($109.99 item + $0.00 shipping)
    Total: $667.04 (v. $829.99 from Psystar)
The question is "where is FDD/HDD cables?"

OS X On The Samsung Q1

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

Sometimes the MacBook Air isn't enough for some people. The Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium has a 1.33GHz Core Solo and 2GB of RAM, which is enough for Mac OS X. The man who actually installed Mac OS X said that he doesn't want to make a tutorial, nor did he say that he expected everything to work. He said that working with the touchscreen on the Q1 is actually usable. As for wireless and internet, well not just yet.

Just thought this was kinda cool.
